It is intended for upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students who need to develop parallel codes with little or no previous introduction to parallel computing. It is also intended as a reference manual for researchers active in the field of scientific computing. All the algorithms in the book are based on partition operators. These operators provide a unifying principle that fits seemingly disparate techniques into an overall framework for algorithm design. The book uses the co-array programming model to illustrate how to write code for concrete examples, but it emphasizes that the important concepts for algorithm design are independent of the programming model. With these concepts in mind, the reader can write algorithms in different programming models based on personal taste and comfort.

Book excerpt: Application-specific regular array processors have been widely used in signal and image processing, multimedia and communication systems, for example, in data compression and HDTV. One of the main problems of application-specific computing is how to map algorithms into hardware. The major achievement of the theory of regular arrays is that an algorithm, represented as a data dependence graph, is embedded into a Euclidean space, where the integer points are the elementary computations and the dependencies between computations are denoted by vectors between points. The process of mapping an algorithm into hardware is reduced to finding, for the given Euclidean space, a new coordinate system that can be associated with the physical properties of space and time - so called space-time. The power of the synthesis method is that it provides a bridge between "abstract" and "physical" representations of algorithms, thus providing a methodological basis for synthesizing computations in space and in time. This book will extend the existing synthesis theory by exploiting the associativity and commutativity of computations. The practical upshot being a controlled increase in the dimensionality of the Euclidean space representing an algorithm. This increase delivers more degrees of freedom in the choice of the space-time mapping and leads, subsequently, to more choice in the selection of cost-effective application-specific designs.

Book excerpt: During a meeting in Toronto last winter, Mike Jenkins, Bob Bernecky and I were discussing how the two existing theories on arrays influenced or were in fluenced by programming languages and systems. More's Army Theory was the basis for NIAL and APL2 and Mullin's A Mathematics of A rmys(MOA) , is being used as an algebra of arrays in functional and A-calculus based pro gramming languages. MOA was influenced by Iverson's initial and extended algebra, the foundations for APL and J respectively. We discussed that there is a lot of interest in the Computer Science and Engineering communities concerning formal methods for languages that could support massively parallel operations in scientific computing, a back to-roots interest for both Mike and myself. Languages for this domain can no longer be informally developed since it is necessary to map languages easily to many multiprocessor architectures. Software systems intended for parallel computation require a formal basis so that modifications can be done with relative ease while ensuring integrity in design. List based lan guages are profiting from theoretical foundations such as the Bird-Meertens formalism. Their theory has been successfully used to describe list based parallel algorithms across many classes of architectures.

Massive parallelism to cope with high-speed requirements stemming from real-time applications and the restrictions in architectural and circuit design, such as regularity and local connectedness, brought about by the VLSI technology are the key questions addressed in these eight papers. They can be grouped into three subsections elaborating on: • Simulation of continuous physical systems, i. e. , numerically solving partial differential equations. • Neural architectures for image processing and pattern recognition. • Systolic architectures for implementing regular and irregular algorithms in VLSI technology. The paper by A. Fettweis and O. Nitsche advocates a signal processing approach for the numerical integration of partial differential equations (PD Es). It is based on the principles of multidimensional wave digital filters (MDWDFs) thereby preserving the passivity of energy dissipating physical systems. It is particularly suited for systems ofPDEs involving time and finite propagation speed. The basic ideas are explained using Maxwell's equa tions as a vehicle for the derivation of a multidimensional equivalent circuit representing the spatially infinitely extended arrangement with only very few circuit elements.

Topics covered range from vectorization of fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) and of the incomplete Cholesky conjugate gradient (ICCG) algorithm on the Cray-1 to calculation of table lookups and piecewise functions. Single tridiagonal linear systems and vectorized computation of reactive flow are also discussed. Comprised of 13 chapters, this volume begins by classifying parallel computers and describing techniques for performing matrix operations on them. The reader is then introduced to FFTs and the tridiagonal linear system as well as the ICCG method. Different versions of the conjugate gradient method for solving the time-dependent diffusion equation are considered. Subsequent chapters deal with two- and three-dimensional fluid flow calculations, paying particular attention to the principal issues in designing efficient numerical methods for hydrodynamic calculations; the decisions that a numerical modeler must make to optimize chemically reactive flow simulations; and how to handle disk-to-core data transfer and storage allocation for the solution of the implicit equations for three-dimensional flows. The book also describes the time-split finite difference scheme for solving the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation for flows through slotted nozzles. Finally, the large-scale stimulation of plasmas, as carried out on a small computer with an array processor, is discussed. This monograph should be of interest to specialists in computer science.
