Book Physics of the Aurora and Airglow

Download or read book Physics of the Aurora and Airglow written by Joseph W. Chamberlain and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Geophysics Series, Volume 2: Physics of the Aurora and Airglow explores certain physical aspects of aurora and airglow. This volume is composed of 13 chapters and begins with surveys of the theory and spectroscopic and photometric analyses of radiation from the upper atmosphere. The subsequent chapters treat the geographic distribution of aurora and its physical processes in the atmosphere. Other chapters examine the theory of hydrogen emission in aurora, resonance scattering by atmospheric sodium, the excitation of the oxygen red lines in the airglow, and an atlas of the auroral spectrum. A chapter focuses on the analysis of twilight observations for emission heights. The concluding chapters discuss the theory of day airglow, as well as the spectral photometry and excitation of the nightglow. This book is of value to geophysicists, theoreticians, and scientists of the allied fields of geophysics.

Book Atmosphere Ocean and Climate Dynamics

Download or read book Atmosphere Ocean and Climate Dynamics written by John Marshall and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1961-01-01 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed. The combination of observations, theory and accompanying illustrative laboratory experiments sets this text apart by making it accessible to students with no prior training in meteorology or oceanography.* Written at a mathematical level that is appealing for undergraduates andbeginning graduate students* Provides a useful educational tool through a combination of observations andlaboratory demonstrations which can be viewed over the web* Contains instructions on how to reproduce the simple but informativelaboratory experiments* Includes copious problems (with sample answers) to help students learn thematerial.

Book Photographing the Aurora Borealis

Download or read book Photographing the Aurora Borealis written by and published by Amherst Media, Inc. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning photographer and accomplished instructor Andy Long provides a comprehensive guide to photographing the Aurora Borealis. It, readers will learn everything they need to know about photographing this phenomenon—along with some very special techniques designed to help kick their image-making up to the next level. Long covers all the details from simply understanding the aurora and figuring out when and where to shoot, to picking the right gear to maximize your success, to processing your digital files after the shoot too maximize your results. You’ll learn how to capture the moon, star trails, and Milky Way in your images of the aurora—and even how to produce dazzling time-lapse images. Also covered are practical matters, like coping with long, cold, night-time shoots (and the equipment problems that can accompany them) and optimizing camera settings to reduce noise, maximize detail, and enhance/downplay lens distortion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography summarizes the seminal contributions to auroral and space science of Carl Størmer (1874 - 1957). He was the first to develop precise photographic methods to calculate heights and morphologies of diverse auroral forms during four solar cycles. Størmer independently devised numerical techniques to determine the trajectories of high-energy charged particles allowed and forbidden in the Earth’s magnetic field. His theoretical analyses explained cosmic ray access to the upper atmosphere, 20 years before they were identified by other scientists. Størmer’s crowning achievement, “The Polar Aurora,” published when he was 81 years old, stands to this day as a regularly cited guide in graduate-level courses on space physics. The authors present the life of this prodigious scientist in relation to the cultural life of early 20th century in Norway and to the development of the space sciences in the post-Sputnik era.
