Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Cord McKinsey, a pirate cursed in 1716 for doing a good deed, now operates his schooner, the Sarah Jane, as a cruise ship. Doomed to remain effectively ship-bound and within the Caribbean waters, Cord, 34, has often reinvented himself and his ship over these near 300 years. Though long despaired of ever breaking his curse, he becomes entwined in solving similar problems for passengers, problems that require extraordinary solutions. When his new Jamaican first mate, Ayanna, confesses she has been cursed by a Bokor, Cord agrees to help her locate a powerful shaman. But the Bokor's plan is more heinous and far-reaching than anyone suspects. The lovely Ayanna fails to mention that her mind and body are changing, taking form as a ravenous reptile. Even with the help of a psychic passenger, Cord may lose the people he cares for as well as his ship, the only square footage on land or sea where pain is not his constant companion. Chris Rogers, best known for her novels of pure suspense, has previously confined any supernatural excursions to short stories featured in her Death Edge anthologies. In Paradise Cursed, Rogers gives imagination full rein to explore life's darker mysteries.

Was the story of Noah and the flood just a fanciful tale, or could it be an actual fact of ancient history? These and other intriguing questions are dealt with rationally, in clear understandable language, in “The Curse.”

Book excerpt: This is a book about curses. It is not about curses as insults or offensive language but curses as petitions to the divine world to render judgment and execute harm on identified, hostile forces. In the ancient world, curses functioned in a way markedly different from our own, and it is into the world of the ancient Near East that we must go in order to appreciate the scope of their influence. For the ancient Near Easterners, curses had authentic meaning. Curses were part of their life and religion. They were not inherently magic or features of superstitions, nor were they mere curiosities or trifling antidotes. They were real and effective. They were employed proactively and reactively to manage life’s many vicissitudes and maintain social harmony. They were principally protective, but they were also the cause of misfortune, illness, depression, and anything else that undermined a comfortable, well-balanced life. Every member of society used them, from slave to king, from young to old, from men and women to the deities themselves. They crossed cultural lines and required little or no explanation, for curses were the source of great evil. In other words, curses were universal. Because curses were woven into the very fabric of every known ancient Near Eastern society, they emerge frequently and in a wide variety of venues. They appear on public and private display objects, on tomb stelae, tomb lintels, and sarcophagi, on ancient kudurrus and narûs. They are used in political, administrative, social, religious, and familial contexts. They are the subject of incantations. They are tools that exorcise demons and dispel disease; they ban, protect, and heal. This is the phenomenology of cursing in the ancient Near East, and this is what the present work explores.

Download or read book Noah s Curse written by Stephen R. Haynes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-03-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren." So reads Noah's curse on his son Ham, and all his descendants, in Genesis 9:25. Over centuries of interpretation, Ham came to be identified as the ancestor of black Africans, and Noah's curse to be seen as biblical justification for American slavery and segregation. Examining the history of the American interpretation of Noah's curse, this book begins with an overview of the prior history of the reception of this scripture and then turns to the distinctive and creative ways in which the curse was appropriated by American pro-slavery and pro-segregation interpreters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking its title from a poem of William Butler Yeats, this collection of essays focuses on "Adam’s Curse"—the burdens and harsh conditions that, as Denis Donoghue underscores throughout, make any human achievement difficult. As he says, those "conditions include at various levels of reference the Fall of Man, categorical failure, loss, the limitations inscribed so insistently in human life that they seem to be in the nature of things, like death and weather." But hope is never ruled out, as Donoghue reminds us of "the possibility of putting up with the conditions and turning them to some account." It is the "putting up with the conditions and turning them to some account"—a post-lapsarian struggle fraught with religious questions—that most interests Donoghue. These essays, which are explorations of both faith and literary works that engage faith, address a dazzling range of texts and writers: Yeats, Milton, Larkin, Heaney, Emmanuel Levinas, Alasdair MacIntyre, John Crowe Ransom, Henry Adams, William Lynch’s Christ and Apollo, and Robert Bellah’s Beyond Belief, among others. Common to all is an alertness to the social bearing of literature and the role it plays in relation to politics, religion, and especially ethics. What emerges, for Donoghue, is the need to restore the primacy of theology and church doctrine without evading the "dark parts" of the Old and New Testaments. Through his probing, reflective encounters with philosophical and religious issues, we witness a magisterial intelligence at work.

Book excerpt: BOOK SUMMARY Every Book of the Judeo-Christian Bible is summarized in order to provide a Biblically accurate and easily read educational resource for anyone who has the desire to intelligently study and understand the Word of God. This unique quick-study cliffs note-type tool covers God's will and plan for mankind; the people God chose to receive His Law, preserve and spread His Word, and through whose descendants a Messiah would come; the history of the world's kings and their Empires from their beginning and up to their prophesied end; the Gospel message of the life, death, resurrection, ascension, and second coming of Jesus Christ that was told first to the Jews and then to the Gentiles by His apostles; the Church age; the future of those who either trust in God and/or His Son or reject Them; and God's plan for man's greatest deceiver, Satan, and for his followers. AUTOBIOGRAPHY Because God had for countless years instilled within me the belief that everyone should have the opportunity of getting to know his Creator and His plans for mankind, He encouraged me to use my editorial experience in science and languages and gave me the energy and words to prepare a summary of every Book of the Bible, over a 10-year period, for individuals who do not read the Word of God because it is too difficult for them to understand. I used a word and verse study approach, various translations of the Bible, and a summarizing procedure, which provided non-denominational cliffs-note type Biblically sound summaries for studying the most exciting and both scientifically and prophetically accurate book every written, the Judeo-Christian Bible. My prayer is that it will be used to excite, encourage, and enhance the world's thirst and hunger for learning that there is absolute truth and that it is found only in the Judeo-Christian Bible.

Book excerpt: In Russia, at night, a despairing young woman of royal blood runs away from her husband’s rich estate, carrying her baby in her arms, to a new life as an artist (1896)... In California, on a playground, a 10-year-old girl calls on her cell-phone 911, trying to save her dying grandmother’s life (2006)... One hundred-and-ten years separate these two events; one hundred-and-ten years of one Russian family, seen from a child’s perspective. In the little girl’s eyes is reflected the whole portrait of Russia in the 20th century – the historical moments, life style, traditions, mentality, and fates of its people – like one shiny raindrop can sometimes reflect the whole world. Curse of Russia is a page-turner book, with subtle dramaturgic line and amazing real, living characters.

Book excerpt: Important: This book is the 2nd book in our Superhero Universe! Artie grew up in a poor family with parents who struggled to make ends meet. His father would go from company to company in search of job opportunities, but he was never offered a position. Artie's mother had a job, but it didn't pay enough to provide for the family. Artie felt the weight of his family's financial struggles and wanted to help. He began stealing money from people, but his family was unaware of his actions. The last time he stole money, it ended in tragedy. Omar, on the other hand, had a different dream. He didn't know what he wanted for his future, but he was determined to become the best "HighResTuber." In pursuit of his goal, he did something foolish. He entered an abandoned hospital to perform rituals for his livestream, hoping to gain fame. As Omar began his livestream, strange things started to happen. The hospital seemed to come alive, and Omar found himself in a world of trouble. Despite their different paths, Artie and Omar's stories were about to intersect in a way that neither of them could have predicted. But the rituals went wrong, and a big blue beam went through the roof of the abandoned hospital, and it went into his body. The next day, he hears voices in his head, and that voice was from Artie. They both didn't know how this was possible, but Artie remembered that he did the same ritual as Omar did, and that must've been the reason. But one thing was for certain, Artie didn't belong there, so there were people coming after them. Do you want to find out what happened next?
