Book excerpt: Speak enters the world of Gossip Girl in this modern immigrant story from New York Times bestselling author Kelly Yang about two girls navigating wealth, power, friendship, and trauma. They’re called parachutes: teenagers dropped off to live in private homes and study in the United States while their wealthy parents remain in Asia. Claire Wang never thought she’d be one of them, until her parents pluck her from her privileged life in Shanghai and enroll her at a high school in California. Suddenly she finds herself living in a stranger’s house, with no one to tell her what to do for the first time in her life. She soon embraces her newfound freedom, especially when the hottest and most eligible parachute, Jay, asks her out. Dani De La Cruz, Claire’s new host sister, couldn’t be less thrilled that her mom rented out a room to Claire. An academic and debate team star, Dani is determined to earn her way into Yale, even if it means competing with privileged kids who are buying their way to the top. But Dani’s game plan veers unexpectedly off course when her debate coach starts working with her privately. As they steer their own distinct paths, Dani and Claire keep crashing into one another, setting a course that will change their lives forever.

Book Silk Parachute

Download or read book Silk Parachute written by John McPhee and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A WONDROUS NEW BOOK OF MCPHEE'S PROSE PIECES—IN MANY ASPECTS HIS MOST PERSONAL IN FOUR DECADES The brief, brilliant essay "Silk Parachute," which first appeared in The New Yorker a decade ago, has become John McPhee's most anthologized piece of writing. In the nine other pieces here— highly varied in length and theme—McPhee ranges with his characteristic humor and intensity through lacrosse, long-exposure view-camera photography, the weird foods he has sometimes been served in the course of his reportorial travels, a U.S. Open golf championship, and a season in Europe "on the chalk" from the downs and sea cliffs of England to the Maas valley in the Netherlands and the champagne country of northern France. Some of the pieces are wholly personal. In luminous recollections of his early years, for example, he goes on outings with his mother, deliberately overturns canoes in a learning process at a summer camp, and germinates a future book while riding on a jump seat to away games as a basketball player. But each piece—on whatever theme—contains somewhere a personal aspect in which McPhee suggests why he was attracted to write about the subject, and each opens like a silk parachute, lofted skyward and suddenly blossoming with color and form.

Book Parachute Recovery Systems

Download or read book Parachute Recovery Systems written by Theo W. Knacke and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide recovery system engineers in government and industry with tools to evaluate, analyze, select, and design parachute recovery systems. These systems range from simple, one-parachute assemblies to multiple-parachute systems, and may include equipment for impact attenuation, flotation, location, retrieval, and disposition. All system aspects are discussed, including the need for parachute recovery, the selection of the most suitable recovery system concept, concept analysis, parachute performance, force and stress analysis, material selection, parachute assembly and component design, and manufacturing. Experienced recovery system engineers will find this publication useful as a technical reference book; recent college graduates will find it useful as a textbook for learning about parachutes and parachute recovery systems; and technicians with extensive practical experience will find it useful as an engineering textbook that includes a chapter on parachute- related aerodynamics. In this manual, emphasis is placed on aiding government employees in evaluating and supervising the design and application of parachute systems. The parachute recovery system uses aerodynamic drag to decelerate people and equipment moving in air from a higher velocity to a lower velocity and to a safe landing. This lower velocity is known as rate of descent, landing velocity, or impact velocity, and is determined by the following requirements: (1) landing personnel uninjured and ready for action, (2) landing equipment and air vehicles undamaged and ready for use or refurbishment, and (3) impacting ordnance at a preselected angle and velocity.

Book Parachutes Patriots and Partisans

Download or read book Parachutes Patriots and Partisans written by Heather Williams and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on impressive research and new evidence, this history of the secret British wartime agency, the Special Operations Executive, in wartime Yugoslavia argues that SOE actions achieved little military advantage for the Allies and exacerbated the developing civil war among the forces of monarchist Drazha Mihailovic, Tito s partisans, and other guerilla groups. Heather Williams tracks SOE relations with the British Foreign office, policy-makers, and military high command; the Yugoslav guerrilla movements and exiled Yugoslav government; other secret organizations, and the American Office of Strategic Services, examining how rivalries among these players influenced the future of Yugoslavia. Copublished with C. Hurst & Co, Publishers Ltd., London The Wisconsin edition is for saleonly in North and South American, U.S. dependencies, and the Philippines. "

Book Comparison of Tail and Wing tip Spin recovery Parachutes as Determined by Tests in the Langley 20 foot Free spinning Tunnel

Download or read book Comparison of Tail and Wing tip Spin recovery Parachutes as Determined by Tests in the Langley 20 foot Free spinning Tunnel written by Robert William Kamm and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Tests of spin-recovery parachutes on six models of typical fighter and trainer airplanes were conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel to obtain data for correlating model and full-scale results. Parachutes attached to the tail of the models, to the out wing tip (left wing tip for a right spin), to the inner wing tip, and to both wing tips were tested. The results indicated that parachutes of the same size and type were more effective as spin-recovery devices when they were attached to the outer wing tip in the spin than when they were attached to the tail. The diameter of the outer wing-tip parachute required for a 2-turn recovery by parachute action alone varied from 4 to 7 feet. Parachutes attached to the inner wing tip would not effect recovery. When parachutes attached to both wing tips were used for recovery, the parachute diameters required were of the same order as for tail parachutes. The diameter of the tail parachute required for a 2-turn recovery by parachute action alone varied from 6.5 to 12.5 feet for the airplane designs used.

Book Drag Coefficients for Partially Inflated Flat Circular Parachutes

Download or read book Drag Coefficients for Partially Inflated Flat Circular Parachutes written by Stanley H. Scher and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free-body tests were made in the Langley spin tunnel to determine drag coefficients for 1.07-meter-diameter (3.5-foot) flat circular parachutes when restrained by wire frames in a series of shapes representing those that parachutes assume during the inflation process. Both high-porosity (stable) and low-porosity (unstable) parachutes were investigated. The results obtained should be applicable to inflation analyses for flat circular parachutes.
