Book excerpt: Some portions of the Bible appear mysterious and hard to understand. When we read prophecy, we wonder how it applies to us today. When we read a parable, several meanings may come to mind. How do we know which is correct? Poetry and proverbs may seem obscure. The letters to churches don't seem to connect to us. How do we read each of these types of Bible literature in a way that is both faithful to the text and authoritative for our lives? This guide points the way.

Book Matthew 13 and the Prophetic Parables About the Present Age

Download or read book Matthew 13 and the Prophetic Parables About the Present Age written by Todd Baker and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew chapter 13 is key to correctly understanding the specific time frame for the Second Coming and establishment of Messiah's Kingdom on earth and how the course of the present age will unfold and progress from the first coming of Christ until His return. Failure to properly understand these parables of Matthew 13 results in a failure to understand all the rest of the parables Jesus spoke after them as He so indicated in Luke 4:13. Therefore it behooves every Bible believing Christian to take serious study of the unfolding prophetic events of the present age as symbolized in the eight parables of Matthew 13. This simple exposition is a humble effort to help the Bible student and reader gain a better appreciation and understanding of this chapter as it pertains to those living in the present age as these prophetic parables are unfolding and being fulfilled right before our very eyes!

Book The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13

Download or read book The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13 written by Arthur Pink and published by Darolt Books. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13 is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by Arthur Walkington Pink (1 April 1886 – 15 July 1952) was an English Bible teacher who sparked a renewed interest in the exposition of Calvinism or Reformed Theology. Little known in his own lifetime, Pink became "one of the most influential evangelical authors in the second half of the twentieth century." Arthur Walkington Pink was born in Nottingham, England, to a corn merchant, a devout non-conformist of uncertain denomination, though probably a Congregationalist. Otherwise, almost nothing is known of Pink's childhood or education except that he had some ability and training in music. As a young man, Pink joined the Theosophical Society and apparently rose to enough prominence within its ranks that Annie Besant, its head, offered to admit him to its leadership circle.[4] In 1908 he renounced Theosophy for evangelical Christianity. Desiring to become a minister but unwilling to attend a liberal theological college in England, Pink very briefly studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1910 before taking the pastorate of the Congregational church in Silverton, Colorado. In 1912 Pink left Silverton, probably for California, and then took a joint pastorate of churches in rural Burkesville and Albany, Kentucky. In 1916, he married Vera E. Russell (1893–1962), who had been reared in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Pink's next pastorate seems to have been in Scottsville. Then the newlyweds moved in 1917 to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where Pink became pastor of Northside Baptist Church. By this time Pink had become acquainted with prominent dispensationalist Fundamentalists, such as Harry Ironside and Arno C. Gaebelein, and his first two books, published in 1917 and 1918, were in agreement with that theological position. Yet Pink's views were changing, and during these years he also wrote the first edition of The Sovereignty of God (1918), which argued that God did not love sinners and had deliberately created "unto damnation" those who would not accept Christ. Whether because of his Calvinistic views, his nearly incredible studiousness, his weakened health, or his lack of sociability, Pink left Spartanburg in 1919 believing that God would "have me give myself to writing." But Pink then seems next to have taught the Bible with some success in California for a tent evangelist named Thompson while continuing his intense study of Puritan writings.

Book The Parables of Jesus Revisited

Download or read book The Parables of Jesus Revisited written by Wm. F. Bekgaard and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the exception of perhaps prophecy, more has been written and interpreted about parables than any other subject in the Bible. Many authors offer varying viewpoints and theories on these stories, but few explain how to discover which opinion is correct. The Parables of Jesus Revisited shares a commonsense approach to understanding biblical parables and applying them to a twenty-first century society by removing any mystery or misunderstanding that surrounds them. Parables are figures of speech used to teach and instruct and should not be so cryptic that they cannot be understood. By discarding the use of allegorical interpretation and applying the storys literal meaning to our lives, we learn that each parable is meant to be read as a simple story, without any hidden meaning. In Matthew 13:1315, Jesus spoke of people who could not understand these stories because of an unwillingness to hear the truth. But the parables were not meant for the faithless. Instead, they were meant for souls interested in hearing more about Christs message. Learn how to interpret these parables through notes on the customs from the period, allegorical and literal interpretations, practical applications, and more. If you have ever wondered about the real meaning of biblical parables, The Parables of Jesus Revisited is the key to unlocking the truth.

Book The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13 New Testament Prophecy in the Teachings of Jesus Christ Hardcover

Download or read book The Prophetic Parables of Matthew 13 New Testament Prophecy in the Teachings of Jesus Christ Hardcover written by A. W. Pink and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This superb Bible commentary by Christian teacher A. W. Pink narrates the thirteenth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, identifying and discussing the prophecy within these words. An engaging and thorough examination of its New Testament subject, A. W. Pink deftly navigates the parables and presents a convincing narrative. Supporting his viewpoint with quotations from other Biblical books, a picture forms of Matthew 13 as a text of immense meaning and spiritual significance for believers in Christ's gospel and the ultimate destiny of all Christians. The author's interpretation of the scripture is thought-provoking and refreshingly coherent throughout. Noted for his unique personality and gifts as a Biblical scholar, Arthur W. Pink composed numerous Bible analyses and other Christian texts. He spent most of his lifetime as an obscure teacher, who energetically wrote on subjects of faith. Following his death in 1952, a wellspring of interest and appreciation brought Pink posthumous prominence.

Book The Matthean Parables

Download or read book The Matthean Parables written by Ivor H. Jones and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Matthean Parables offers a fresh approach to the origin of Matthew's Gospel. It builds on current historical, literary, rhetorical and sociological studies of Matthew's Gospel to show how the Matthean parables illuminate the structure, purpose and theology of that gospel. The first part of the book establishes the need for a new attempt to define the genre of Matthew's Gospel, examines what is meant by a parable, and summarises the contribution made by the parables to that new attempt. The second part is a thorough exegetical, historical critical and literary study of all the Matthean parables in the context of the whole gospel and in the light of all the Matthean figurative material. An appendix illustrates the use of syntactical material in defining the character and style of a biblical text.

Book The Synoptic Gospels and the Psalms as Prophecy

Download or read book The Synoptic Gospels and the Psalms as Prophecy written by J. Samuel Subramanian and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-11-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Psalms is one of the most frequently cited books in the New Testament. The Synoptic Evangelists seem to read the Psalms not primarily as prayers but as prophecies of the future. They discovered in its language prophecies concerning the life and ministry of Jesus and attempted to show how Jesus' life was prefigured in the Psalms. Samuel Subramanian examines the topic within the broader use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, that of the prophetic reading of the Psalms in the Synoptic Gospels and in the context of Second Temple Judaism. Although others have treated individual psalm quotations as prophecy, my work is the first to examine all of the psalm quotations within the Synoptic Gospels in this light and the first to demonstrate that these excerpts were used prophetically. In some cases, these psalm quotations were used by the Synoptic Evangelists in a manner that is thought to fulfill a prophecy from or about Jesus within the gospel narratives, even though this particular use of the psalms by the Synoptic Evangelists has not been widely recognized previously. This study shows how similar exegetical techniques of looking for prophecies in the Psalms was practiced by non-Christian Jews of the period.

  • ISBN : 9781451413243
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book The Parables of Jesus written by Luise Schottroff and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A premier New Testament scholar explores how Jesus' trial and execution are portrayed in the New Testament and how that portrayal has affected biblical studies, Christian theology, and Jewish-Christian relations through history. Tomson has written an accessible, responsible analysis of the biblical accounts of Jesus' death, demonstrating how, through compounded misunderstandings, they contributed to anti-Jewish sentiment in the early church and later history. Tomson's question of how Jesus is to be understood in his first-century Judean context is a critical one not only for biblical scholars, but for anyone concerned about human rights and interreligious dialogue today.
