Download or read book An American Son written by Marco Rubio and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few politicians have risen to national prominence as quickly as Marco Rubio. Here is the full story of his unlikely journey. Florida Senator Marco Rubio electrified the 2012 Republican National Convention by telling the story of his parents, who were struggling immigrants from Cuba. They embraced their new country and taught their children to appreciate its unique opportunities. Every sacrifice they made over the years, as they worked hard at blue-collar jobs in Miami and Las Vegas, was for their children. Young Marco grew up dreaming about football, not politics. In this fascinating memoir, he reveals how he ended up running for the West Miami City Commission, and then the Florida House of Representatives. In just six years he rose to Speaker of the Florida House. He then won his U.S. Senate campaign as an extreme long shot. Now Rubio speaks on the national stage about the better future that’s possible if we return to our founding principles. In that vision, as in his family’s story, Rubio proves that the American Dream is still alive for those who pursue it.

Download or read book Postcolonial Approaches to Latin American Children s Literature written by Ann González and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume González explores how the effects of a traumatic colonial experience are (re)presented to Latin American children today, almost two centuries after the dismantling of colonialism proper. Central to this study is the argument that the historical constraints of colonialism, neocolonialism, and postcolonialism have generated certain repeating themes and literary strategies in children’s literature throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas. From the outset of Spanish domination, fundamental tensions emerged between the colonizers and native groups that still exist to this day. Rather than a felicitous mixing of these two opposing groups, the mestizo is caught between contrasting worldviews, contending explanations of reality, and different values, beliefs, and epistemologies (that is, different ways of seeing and knowing). Postcolonial subjects experience these contending cultural beliefs and practices as a double bind, a no-win situation, in which they feel pressured by mutually exclusive expectations and imperatives. Latin American mestizos, therefore, are inevitably conflicted. Despite the vastness of the geography in question and the innumerable variations in regional histories, oral traditions, and natural settings, these contradictory demands create a pervasive dynamic that penetrates the very fabric of society, showing up intentionally or not in the stories passed from generation to generation as well as in new stories written or adapted for Spanish-speaking children. The goal of this study, therefore, is to examine a variety of children’s texts from the region to determine how national and hemispheric perceptions of reality, identity, and values are passed to the next generation. This book will appeal to scholars in the fields of Latin American literary and cultural studies, children’s literature, postcolonial studies, and comparative literature.
Download or read book Indigenous America in the Spanish Language Classroom written by Anne Fountain and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many Spanish language teachers have little understanding of the indigenous languages and cultures that are part of the Spanish-speaking Americas. This book proposes to fill that gap and help teachers include the history and culture of Indigenous Peoples using a social justice lens. Indigenous America begins with an overview of the history of colonialism throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas and ties it to language teaching curricula and standards. Each substantive chapter ends with a list of conclusions, a list of questions for discussion and debate, and a set of teaching topics and concrete classroom exercises. Fountain will include photographs of places, people, and artifacts to make this history tangible. Appendices with more details about incorporating some rich resources into the Spanish language classroom are included, as is a glossary of important terms. This book is the first resource of its kind and is timely--teachers are eager to include more voices in their courses"--
