Book The Christian Liturgical Papyri An Introduction

Download or read book The Christian Liturgical Papyri An Introduction written by Ágnes T. Mihálykó and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liturgical papyri are prime witnesses to the history of liturgy and the religious and theological currents in late antique Egypt. These items from the third to ninth century preserve hundreds of Greek and Coptic hymns, prayers, and acclamations, most otherwise unknown but some still recited by the Coptic Church. Agnes T. Mihalyko offers the first extensive introduction to the liturgical papyri, facilitating the reader's access to them with a detailed inventory of edited manuscripts and an extensive discussion of their date and provenance. She also examines liturgical papyri as the first preserved liturgical manuscripts, describing their material features, the ways they were used, the early history of the liturgical books, and their languages. She reveals how liturgical texts were written down and transmitted and locates these important manuscripts in the book culture of late antique Egypt.

Book excerpt: Despite the prominence of ancient temples in the landscape of Egypt, books about them are surprisingly rare; this new and essential publication from a prominent Czech scholar answers the need for a study that goes beyond temple architecture to examine the spiritual, economic and political aspects of these specific institutions and the dominant roles they played. Miroslav Verner presents a deeper and more complex study of major ancient Egyptian religious centers, their principal temples, their rise and decline, their religious doctrines, cults, rituals, feasts, and mysteries. Also discussed are the various categories of priests, the organization of the priesthood, and its daily services and customs. Each chapter offers the reader essential and up-to-date information about temple complexes and the history of their archaeological exploration, in the context of the spiritual dimension and cultural legacy of ancient Egypt.

Book Greek Papyri from Kellis

Download or read book Greek Papyri from Kellis written by Klaas Anthony Worp and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 1995 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Kellis lies some 400 miles to the south-west of Cairo in the western desert of Egypt. This first volume of Kellis Papyri contains 90 texts from Area A of the site at Ismet el-Kharab, found over several seasons of excavation since 1986 by the Dakhleh Oasis Project. Over that period, several thousands of papyrus fragments, ostraka and wooden boards inscribed with Greek or Coptic, and occasionally Syriac and Latin texts, were discovered. This volume contains the most coherent of those Greek texts, with photographic reproductions of each papyrii. Together they offer a broad range of glimpses into the daily life of people living in Kellis in the fourth century AD, and are especially interesting, as until quite recently hardly any documents from or about the Dakhleh Oasis had been published. Also included are a number of indices referring to the mention in the texts of emperors and consuls, personal and geographical names, professions and trades, religion and magic, and other significant words or terms.

Download or read book Greek Papyri written by Eric Gardner Turner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians, classicists, and archeologists will welcome Professor Turner's lucid introduction to the field of Greek papyrology. The relatively recent rediscovery of Greek (and Latin) texts on papyrus has made possible greatly improved editions of classic works and has provided a deeper understanding of life in classical times. Professor Turner considers papyrus as a writing material, goes on to the problems of excavating for papyri, editing a papyrus text, determining its author and owners, and so on. He discusses the relation of papyri to Greek literature as well as to various types of non-literary documents, and he assesses various contributions papyri have made to ancient history. A list of the principal editions of papyri is included. Originally published in 1968. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
