The latest poem "I'm in love" was composed in March 2007. The poems authored during 2005-2007 have a distinct feel, an idiosyncratic rhythm. Book Salsa Crossings

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cindy García
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2013-06-18
  • ISBN : 0822378299
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Salsa Crossings written by Cindy García and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Los Angeles, night after night, the city's salsa clubs become social arenas where hierarchies of gender, race, and class, and of nationality, citizenship, and belonging are enacted on and off the dance floor. In an ethnography filled with dramatic narratives, Cindy García describes how local salseras/os gain social status by performing an exoticized L.A.–style salsa that distances them from club practices associated with Mexicanness. Many Latinos in Los Angeles try to avoid "dancing like a Mexican," attempting to rid their dancing of techniques that might suggest that they are migrants, poor, working-class, Mexican, or undocumented. In L.A. salsa clubs, social belonging and mobility depend on subtleties of technique and movement. With a well-timed dance-floor exit or the lift of a properly tweezed eyebrow, a dancer signals affiliation not only with a distinctive salsa style but also with a particular conceptualization of latinidad.

Book Amitola

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Fleur de Presse
  • Release : 2018-11-13
  • ISBN : 0578566338
  • Pages : 501 pages

Download or read book Amitola written by A. Grant Richard and published by Fleur de Presse. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can all say and believe, “I’d never do that,” but what happens when you do? Maia Cameron knows what she did. She can’t stop thinking about it. After all she’s been through just to survive, you can bet she doesn’t regret it. Or does she? That’s what this place does to you. It messes with your head. If you live, that is. And then there’s him…them. What was she supposed to do about them? What would they do with her? Humanity wrestles with self-preservation deep in the wetlands and chaos of the place they once called home. Will love prevail? This hardcore heroine will redefine the “good girl” for all of us. This is a story of human connection and a will to survive. It’s about what happens to even good people when all hope — and boundaries– are gone. Faith, beliefs, and political stances will be tested. It’s raw emotion at it’s finest. Written by up and coming author, A. Grant Richard, Amitola: The Making of a Tribe is the first book in a series of sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, dystopian novels. However, it works well as a stand-alone. WARNING: This isn’t a novel for the faint of heart. It’ll challenge you and move you in ways you didn’t want to be moved. Before it’s over, you just might be wishing for a reset of your own. When it does go down, we got you here in Cajun Country.

Book Nerds Goths Geeks and Freaks

Download or read book Nerds Goths Geeks and Freaks written by Trevor Boffone and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-03-18 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Children’s Literature Association’s 2022 Edited Book Award Contributions by Carolina Alonso, Elena Avilés, Trevor Boffone, Christi Cook, Ella Diaz, Amanda Ellis, Cristina Herrera, Guadalupe García McCall, Domino Pérez, Adrianna M. Santos, Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, Lettycia Terrones, and Tim Wadham In Nerds, Goths, Geeks, and Freaks: Outsiders in Chicanx and Latinx Young Adult Literature, the outsider intersects with discussions of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. The essays in this volume address questions of outsider identities and how these identities are shaped by mainstream myths around Chicanx and Latinx young people, particularly with the common stereotype of the struggling, underachieving inner-city teens. Contributors also grapple with how young adults reclaim what it means to be an outsider, weirdo, nerd, or goth, and how the reclamation of these marginalized identities expand conversations around authenticity and narrow understandings of what constitutes cultural identity. Included are analysis of such texts as I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, Shadowshaper, Swimming While Drowning, and others. Addressed in the essays are themes of outsiders in Chicanx/Latinx children’s and young adult literature, and the contributors insist that to understand Latinx youth identities it is necessary to shed light on outsiders within an already marginalized ethnic group: nerds, goths, geeks, freaks, and others who might not fit within such Latinx popular cultural paradigms as the chola and cholo, identities that are ever-present in films, television, and the internet.

Will the sisters' close bond survive under the pressure of their community and fretful parents, who will spare no effort to make them tinier? Jar of Fat, the fifteenth winner of the Yale Drama Prize, is a phantasmagorical, absurdist Korean American tale about the allure and danger entangled within the quest for beauty and thinness.
