Download or read book Tell Me Another War Story written by Margaret Garcia and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tell Me Another War Story is about the life and legacy of Evans Garcia, who was born in 1913 in Dona Ana, New Mexico, and who fought in World War II with New Mexico National Guard's 200th Coast Artillery (AA) in the Philippines. His unit was the first to fire on the enemy in the Pacific and, on April 9, 1942, the last unit to lay their arms down in the Battle of Bataan when they were surrendered, subsequently taken captive as prisoners of war, and forced on the ruthless, inhumane Bataan Death March. The story begins by tracing Evans' rural upbringing with families who worked in Mesilla Valley's agricultural fields and farms, and follows him through the war experiences on Bataan, his harrowing near-death hardships as a POW, a hellship voyage, and as a slave laborer in a condemned Japanese coal mine. Through it all, he kept his faith in God, and had a way of finding the silver lining, and often, humor, in the midst of the anguish of war. After the war, Evans returned to New Mexico, worked in Santa Fe with the Selective Service System for 25 years, and poured his energy into veteran activities, always ready and willing to serve his fellow soldier. His daughter, Margaret, listened to and wrote down his war stories for years. Initially, she did not realize the importance of them, but at one point, was inspired to pull her notes together and tell his story. "Dad's mantra to me was, 'Do everything you can so they don't forget Bataan, '" Margaret said. "That was one of my goals in writing this story, and it took me on an unexpected and unforgettable journey that has made my life richer."Margaret lives in Albuquerque with her cat, Tyson."
Download or read book But Deliver Us from Evil Father Duffy and the Men of Bataan written by Dan Murr and published by . This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: But Deliver Us from Evil, Father Duffy and the Men of Bataan is an attempt to reveal the pain and suffering Colonel John E. Duffy, a U.S. Army chaplain of the Catholic faith, endured from 9 April 1942 until his death on 4 June 1958. When Bataan and 70,000 American and Filipino troops were surrendered to the Japanese, Father Duffy was among those captured. He died at Letterman Hospital, The Presidio, San Francisco, CA of cancer and was buried there at the national cemetery on a hill overlooking San Francisco Bay. With him went the true story of his and his fellow prisoners of war ordeal. He was wounded six times, bayoneted and left for dead on the Bataan Death March but was rescued by Filipino Guerillas. He was betrayed and recaptured, survived the bombing and strafing by U.S. planes that sunk two Japanese Hellships loaded with U.S. POWs, a lack of food and water, torture by his captors and illness but still carried out his chaplain's duties. He was truly one of the little-known heroes of World War II.

Download or read book Delay the Disease written by David Zid and published by Delay the Disease. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exercise program is a collaboration between a certified personal trainer, David Zid, a nurse, Jackie Russell and an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Thomas Mallory, who retired due to Parkinson's disease. The idea was sparked when Dr. Mallory discovered that a daily exercise routine created for him by Zid seemed to dramatically improve his symptoms. The result was a book detailing a fitness plan for Parkinson's patients at every stage of the disease. The 70 page spiral bound book lays flat enabling the person to easily consult each Parkinson's specific exercise which is illustrated in full color with a detailed description on how to perform the exercise. Emphasis is placed on activities of daily living that frequently become a challenge to those with Parkinson's, such as rising from a chair or moving around in crowds. The program is well thought out and works the entire body.
