Book excerpt: This paper presents a thought-provoking analysis of the role of dress in society and its impact on women's rights and freedoms. The author argues that clothing is a powerful symbol of gender norms and expectations, and that women should have the right to choose what they wear without fear of judgement or discrimination. Book Rooftop Astronomer

Download or read book Rooftop Astronomer written by Stephanie Sammartino McPherson and published by Millbrook Press. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a clear autumn night in 1847. Maria Mitchell stood on the roof of her parents' house on the island of Nantucket, focusing her telescope on a faraway star. Suddenly she realized that the faint, blurry light wasn't a star at all—it was a comet! Maria Mitchell's discovery changed her life. She became famous as the first acknowledged woman astronomer in the United States. During her many travels, Maria came to realize that most women did not have the same opportunities as men. She thought that women should be encouraged to be anything they wanted to be. This was a lesson she taught her students as an astronomy professor at Vassar College and a message she stressed as the president of the Association for the Advancement of Women. From the rooftops of Nantucket to the great observatories of Europe, Stephanie Sammartino McPherson skillfully chronicles the life of this outstanding woman.

Download or read book Uneasy Careers and Intimate Lives written by Pnina G. Abir-Am and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These pioneering studies of women in science pay special attention to the mutual impact of family life and scientific career. The contributors address five key themes: historical changes in such concepts as scientific career, profession, patronage, and family; differences in "gender image" associated with various branches of science; consequences of national differences and emigration; opportunities for scientific work opened or closed by marriage; and levels of women's awareness about the role of gender in science. An international group of historians of science discuss a wide range of European and American women scientists--from early nineteenth-century English botanists to Marie Curie to the twentieth-century theoretical biologist, Dorothy Wrinch.

Book The Freedom of the Streets

Download or read book The Freedom of the Streets written by Sharon E. Wood and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilded Age cities offered extraordinary opportunities to women--but at a price. As clerks, factory hands, and professionals flocked downtown to earn a living, they alarmed social critics and city fathers, who warned that self-supporting women were just steps away from becoming prostitutes. With in-depth research possible only in a mid-sized city, Sharon E. Wood focuses on Davenport, Iowa, to explore the lives of working women and the prostitutes who shared their neighborhoods. The single, self-supporting women who migrated to Davenport in the years following the Civil War saw paid labor as the foundation of citizenship. They took up the tools of public and political life to assert the respectability of paid employment and to confront the demon of prostitution. Wood offers cradle-to-grave portraits of individual girls and women--both prostitutes and "respectable" white workers--seeking to reshape their city and expand women's opportunities. As Wood demonstrates, however, their efforts to rewrite the sexual politics of the streets met powerful resistance at every turn from men defending their political rights and sexual power.

This book was released on 1993-01-26 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the nation's beginnings, efforts have been made to silence U.S. women. Yet they spoke. This biographical dictionary, the first of two companion volumes, gives their voices new recognition. Selecting thirty-seven key orators, Karlyn Kohrs Campbell provides entries on a diverse group of women. All were ground breakers--suffragists, the first lawyers, ministers, physicians, labor organizers, newspaper editors and publishers, historians, educators, even soldiers. The volume opens with Campbell's introduction and then provides extensive essays on each of the women included. Each entry begins with brief biographical information and then focuses on the woman's public life in discourse. Each entry includes an analysis of the subject's rhetoric. Entries conclude with information on primary sources, critical works, key rhetorical documents, and selected sources of historical and biographical information. The work is fully indexed.
