Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly engagement with the magazine form has, in the last two decades, produced a substantial amount of valuable research. Authored by leading academic authorities in the study of magazines, the chapters in The Routledge Handbook of Magazine Research not only create an architecture to organize and archive the developing field of magazine research, but also suggest new avenues of future investigation. Each of 33 chapters surveys the last 20 years of scholarship in its subject area, identifying the major research themes, theoretical developments and interpretive breakthroughs. Exploration of the digital challenges and opportunities which currently face the magazine world are woven throughout, offering readers a deeper understanding of the magazine form, as well as of the sociocultural realities it both mirrors and influences. The book includes six sections: -Methodologies and structures presents theories and models for magazine research in an evolving, global context. -Magazine publishing: the people and the work introduces the roles and practices of those involved in the editorial and business sides of magazine publishing. -Magazines as textual communication surveys the field of contemporary magazines across a range of theoretical perspectives, subjects, genre and format questions. -Magazines as visual communication explores cover design, photography, illustrations and interactivity. -Pedagogical and curricular perspectives offers insights on undergraduate and graduate teaching topics in magazine research. -The future of the magazine form speculates on the changing nature of magazine research via its environmental effects, audience, and transforming platforms.

Book Sociology

  • Author : David M. Newman
  • Publisher : SAGE Publications
  • Release : 2016-08-16
  • ISBN : 1506345840
  • Pages : 393 pages

Download or read book Sociology written by David M. Newman and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adapted from David M. Newman’s best-selling Sociology: Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life, this briefer, streamlined version continues to show students how to see the “unfamiliar in the familiar,” inspiring them to think critically about their own lives and social contexts. As in the full text, the author’s approachable writing style and lively personal anecdotes make the Brief Edition a text that “reads like a real book.” It uses the metaphors of “architecture” and “construction” to help students understand that society is not something that exists “out there,” independently of themselves; it is a human creation that is planned, formed, maintained, or altered by individuals. Rather than surveying every subfield in sociology, the Brief Edition focuses on the individual and society, the construction of self and society, and social inequality in the context of social structures.

Book Jewish Reform Movement in the US

Download or read book Jewish Reform Movement in the US written by Mara W. Cohen Ioannides and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the development of the non-liturgical parts of the Central Conference of American Rabbis’ Haggadot. Through an understanding of the changes in American Jewish educational patterns and the CCAR's theology, it explores how the CCAR Haggadah was changed over time to address the needs of the constituency. While there have been many studies of the Haggadah and its development over the course of Jewish history, there has been no such study of the non-liturgical parts of the Haggadah that reflect the needs of the audience it reaches. How the CCAR, the first and largest of American-born Judaisms, addressed the changing needs of its members through its literature for the Passover Seder reveals much about the development of the movement. This in turn provides for the readers of this book an understanding of how American Judaism has developed.

Book Handbook of Industrial Chemistry and Biotechnology

Download or read book Handbook of Industrial Chemistry and Biotechnology written by James A. Kent and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-13 with total page 1560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantially revising and updating the classic reference in the field, this handbook offers a valuable overview and myriad details on current chemical processes, products, and practices. No other source offers as much data on the chemistry, engineering, economics, and infrastructure of the industry. The Handbook serves a spectrum of individuals, from those who are directly involved in the chemical industry to others in related industries and activities. It provides not only the underlying science and technology for important industry sectors, but also broad coverage of critical supporting topics. Industrial processes and products can be much enhanced through observing the tenets and applying the methodologies found in chapters on Green Engineering and Chemistry (specifically, biomass conversion), Practical Catalysis, and Environmental Measurements; as well as expanded treatment of Safety, chemistry plant security, and Emergency Preparedness. Understanding these factors allows them to be part of the total process and helps achieve optimum results in, for example, process development, review, and modification. Important topics in the energy field, namely nuclear, coal, natural gas, and petroleum, are covered in individual chapters. Other new chapters include energy conversion, energy storage, emerging nanoscience and technology. Updated sections include more material on biomass conversion, as well as three chapters covering biotechnology topics, namely, Industrial Biotechnology, Industrial Enzymes, and Industrial Production of Therapeutic Proteins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, 2016 Errol Hill Book Award for Outstanding Scholarship in African American Theater, Drama and/or Performance Based on a vast amount of archival research, Adrienne Macki Braconi’s illuminating study of three important community-based theaters in Harlem shows how their work was essential to the formation of a public identity for African Americans and the articulation of their goals, laying the groundwork for the emergence of the Civil Rights movement. Macki Braconi uses textual analysis, performance reconstruction, and audience reception to examine the complex dynamics of productions by the Krigwa Players, the Harlem Experimental Theatre, and the Negro Theatre of the Federal Theatre Project. Even as these theaters demonstrated the extraordinary power of activist art, they also revealed its limits. The stage was a site in which ideological and class differences played out, theater being both a force for change and a collision of contradictory agendas. Macki Braconi’s book alters our understanding of the Harlem Renaissance, the roots of the Civil Rights movement, and the history of community theater in America.

Book Pursuing Johns

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas C. Mackey
  • Publisher : Ohio State University Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 0814209882
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Pursuing Johns written by Thomas C. Mackey and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pursuing Johns, Thomas C. Mackey studies the New York Committee of Fourteen and its members' attempts to influence vagrancy laws in early-20th-century New York City as a way to criminalize men's patronizing of female prostitutes. It sought out and prosecuted the city's immoral hotels, unlicensed bars, opium dens, disorderly houses, and prostitutes. It did so because of the threats to individual "character" such places presented. In the early 1920s, led by Frederick Whitin, the Committee thought that the time had arrived to prosecute the men who patronized prostitutes through what modern parlance calls a "john's law." After a notorious test case failed to convict a philandering millionaire for vagrancy, the only statutory crime available to punish men who patronized prostitutes, the Committee lobbied for a change in the state's criminal law. In the process, this representative of traditional 19th-century purity reform allied with the National Women's Party, the advanced feminists of the 1920s. Their proposed "Customer Amendment" united the moral Right and the feminist Left in an effort to alter and use the state's criminal law to make men moral, defend their character, and improve New York City's overall morality. Mackey's contribution to the literature is unique. Instead of looking at how vice commissions targeted female prostitutes or the commerce supporting and surrounding them, Mackey concentrates on how men were scrutinized. Book jacket.

Book H C Westermann at War

    Book Details:
  • Author : David McCarthy
  • Publisher : University of Delaware Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 087413871X
  • Pages : 173 pages

Download or read book H C Westermann at War written by David McCarthy and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the antiwar work of one American artist in relation to the cultural history of the Cold War. The study provides new and detailed information on this important artist, while also contributing to the study of masculinity, dissent, art, violence, and war in the last half of the twentieth century. The study clearly reveals that artists' protests against American foreign policy began well before the official U.S. entry in the Vietnam War, and that not all combat veterans looked back fondly on their experience of the Good War. Finally, in drawing attention to the challenges of being a man in a hostile world, Westermann's art enters into a much broader consideration of gender long before this issue became topical in contemporary art. director of the American Studies Program at Rhodes College in Tennessee.
