The papers which go to make up this book, written at different times, are just of the class that disappears entirely unless some care is taken to preserve them. As a proof of this, I may state that I had looked upon the pamphlet entitled 'England in South Africa' as quite lost, until I discovered accidentally that a lady in Scotland, Mrs. Taylor, had preserved a copy, which she was kind enough to lend me. That pamphlet, written from the standpoint of the loyal Cape Colonists, is, in my opinion, worth preserving, as it shows that so far back as 1885, Dutch National aspirations had taken such definite form as to lead to the formation of an English political association - the Empire League - for the maintenance of the English tie. The other papers, too, will, I venture to think, be of use to the student of the future. Of my own work I shall say nothing, except that, being collected, it may, as the evidence of a witness, possibly be of some use to the historian who, weighing testimony from all sides, shall seek to arrive at the truth. However, in the course of assembling data, much of which was generously provided by the South African government's informational services in the United States, it became apparent that it is virtually impossible to consider any human enterprise in South Africa without some reference to the racial issues that are inevitably involved. There is, in addition, the fact that South Africa's racial policies have been the subject of international censure for a number of years. However, while South Africa has been able to largely ignore these pronouncements because of its advanced economy, it appears now that this situation will not be able to continue much longer. In view of the foregoing, an effort has been made to expand upon this summary of South Africa's economy and place it within the context of the internal and external political factors that have influenced its development and will determine its future. South Africa does not just reflect the nature and diversity of challenges globally, but also the strategies pursued by countries to address these issues. Government institutions, campaigns and local communities have been looking for innovative ways to improve problems of all South Africans they are dealing with. Social and economic determinants of violence and a legacy of apartheid policies such as racism, segregation, injustice and inequality must be addressed to reduce inequalities in society and build community cohesion. In the following section, I would like to give a short insight into my research. The central question of the paper is to expose, how South Africa has changed after Apartheid and what the New South Africa looks like? In order to evaluate the way in which post-Apartheid South Africa deals with the issues, challenges and problems and accommodated its population diversity, this paper is organized in four parts. The first chapter of this paper will give a rough outline of the most important historic events in South Africa during Apartheid. The second chapter deals with internal political transformations after the end of apartheid. This part provides a context on the land issue and to the challenges post-apartheid has to address with unemployment, poverty and inequality. The third part focuses on political processes and debates about the spread of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. The last chapter is about the culture of violence against African migrants, called "Xenophobia". At the very end, there will be a final conclusion which illustrates the question and the aspects which emphasize the results regarding to the hypothesis that are made.

That definitive and peaceful transition from apartheid is often cited as a model for others to follow. The new order has since survived several transitions of ANC leadership, and it averted a potentially destabilizing constitutional crisis in 2008. Yet enormous challenges remain. Poverty and inequality are among the highest in the world. Staggering unemployment has fueled xenophobia, resulting in deadly aggression directed at refugees and migrant workers from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Violent crime rates, particularly murder and rape, remain grotesquely high. The HIV/AIDS pandemic was shockingly mishandled at the highest levels of government, and infection rates continue to be overwhelming. Despite the country’s uplifting success of hosting Africa’s first World Cup in 2010, inefficiency and corruption remain rife, infrastructure and basic services are often semifunctional, and political opposition and a free media are under pressure. In this volume, major scholars chronicle South Africa’s achievements and challenges since the transition. The introduction by William Beinart links the papers together, places them in context of recent literature on popular politics and 'history from below' and summarises their main findings, supporting the argument that popular politics outside of the party system remain significant in South Africa and help influence national politics. The views of the essays may not be entirely consistent and the issues they raise may be contentious. This merely affirms the truism that the State is a contested terrain. The aim of this book is to deepen the search for an understanding of the theory of the State as it applies to a transforming society such as ours and to trudge the dividing line between theory and practice so they can feed into each other in a progressive spiral towards the desired end-state.
