Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of Book Types and of Printing and Bookbinding HE Press Room of the norwood press is one of the largest in the country, having a capacity exceeding that of Fifty Cylinder Presses. It is furnished with the best makes of modern presses, including Stop-cylinder, Two-revolu tion, Flat-bed Perfecting, Adams, and Job Presses, and is sufficiently extensive to enable us to print large editions in the least possible time. Every description of Book or Catalogue Printing is in our line, although we make the finer classes of illustrated work the feature of our business, and a few specimens are shown in this volume. We have printed in the past year volumes, ranging in size from mm, 100 to 1600 pages each, in editions of 250 to copies, or an equivalent of volumes daily, which used about 8 tons of paper per day. We now store in our vault about boxes of plates, and have storage capacity for twice that number. The Text of this Specimen Book is not printed from type, on extra paper; but from electrotype plates, on ordinary paper, and with our regular book ink, to show the results to be obtained in the average book. Book Adventures in Bookbinding

Download or read book Adventures in Bookbinding written by Jeannine Stein and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each project in this book combines bookbinding with a specific craft such as quilting, jewelry making, or polymer clay, and offer levels of expertise: basic, novice, and expert. Illustrated step-by-step instructions and photographs demonstrate how to construct the cover pages, and a unique binding technique, easy enough for a beginner to master. Each project also features two other versions with the same binding geared to those with more or less experience. The novice version is for those who have no knowledge of the craft and want shortcuts, but love the look. For the quilter's book, for example, vintage quilt pieces become the covers so all that's needing in the binding. Or if you're interested in wool felting use an old sweater. This offers great opportunities for upcycling. The expert version is for those who have a great deal of knowledge and proficiency of a certain craft - the master art quilter, for example. For this version, an expert guest artist has created the cover and the author has created the binding. This offers yet another creative opportunity - the collaborative project. Since crafters often get involved with round-robins and other shared endeavors, this will show them yet another way to combine their skills. No other craft book offers the possibilities and challenges that Adventures in Bookbinding does. Readers will return to it again and again to find inspiration and ideas.

Book Notes on Bookbinding for Libraries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Bookbinding for Libraries Classic Reprint written by John Cotton Dana and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Bookbinding for Libraries In the first edition of this book I said that it ought not to be taken as a final authority, but as a set of suggestions which I hoped would arouse interest in the subject of library binding and lead a few to pursue the' subject further. Some of the changes made for this edition indicate that I have followed the topic a little further myself, - I hope with advantage to my readers. Several chapters are new. There are many minor changes and omissions. The lists have been enlarged and brought into one. I had looked into the subject of library binding and discovered the ignorance concerning it of Amer ican librarians, including myself, before I visited Mr. Chivers' beautiful bindery in Bath, England, several years ago. That visit had much to do with the con tents of this little book. Mr. Chivers was quite of my opinion that the only way to induce librarians in America to improve our binding was to persuade us to look into the subject. If the book has led some to do this it has accomplished its purpose. As to the fundamental points in' it, they largely come, I am pleased to confess, from England, by way of that bindery in Bath. Cardboard goods, leather goods, photo albums, maps, and even account-books are treated by particular firms as specialities. AS we must now keep within clearly defined limits, we shall treat here only the work of bookbinding proper as far as it is concerned with the making Of the book for publisher, bookseller, and buyer, and also the making of account-books, whilst the other work given to the binder, commonly called fancy goods, must be excluded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hand-Book of Taste in Book-Binding It would be foreign to the purpose of this little treatise, were I to detail the history, or to discuss the art of Bookbinding. My object is rather to speak of it as connected with taste; to point out the various anomalies that are most frequent in it, and to assist the book-collector in forming a correct judgment on such matters. So numerous are these incongruities, that to detail one half of them would be to tax too severely the indulgence of my readers.
