This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1923 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Ninth Annual Meeting at Hartford, February 20 and 21, 1923 The cause is largely due to the fact that the accomplishments of engineers are apt to be taken for granted and are so necessarily a part of our every day life that little thought attaches to them For example, people will gaze at a building which touches the Clouds and be impressed that it is some high but will hardly give a thought to the achievement from an engineering standpoint which it exemplifies. In this same towering structure, passengers will step into an elevator to be transported twenty, thirty, or more stories with no apprehension as to their safety, and will enjoy the same comforts as to health and convenience on every floor from the bottom to the top. The traveling public will enter a subway and be transported for miles beneath the surface, passing under built up sections of cities and extensive bodies of water with more confidence than they would have on the surface of a congested thoroughfare. Mighty bridges are built to cross our largest streams with spans of almost unbelievable length and millions of people use them daily with the utmost safety and as a matter of course. Bountiful supplies of pure wholesome water are brought to our Cities from sources in the hills miles away, and the wastes of our centers of population are removed with every safeguard to the health and comfort of our people. The better modern pavements are the work of engineers and are designed and built to last until the date of their installation is but a recollection. The tremendous energy of falling waters is harnessed and transported great distances to centers where it can be put to work for the benefit of mankind. And the engineer has been the man behind the gun in all of these accomplishments. I could continue indefinitely to emphasize the importance which attaches to engineers, whether they be Civil, mechanical, electrical, Chemical or engineers of allied branches, and even then the story would be but half told. It would be difficult to say which branch of engineering is making the most rapid advancement, but certain it is that all are making strides such that it is hard to keep up with them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1921-1922 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Seventh and Thirty-Eight Annual Meetings: At New Haven, February 15 and 16, 1921, and New Haven, February 21 and 22, 1922 The Secretary notified me just recently that it would be necessary for me to make an address before the Society here, and I asked him particularly what he wanted me to say. He reminded me of the story that I had heard somewhere about someone who had compiled an address and intended to read it in the usual manner. He said it should be similar to a woman's skirt - short enough to retain inter est, long enough to cover the subject. I told the Secretary I didn't think an address from me would help in any way and I would like to signify my intention of continuing my interest in the Society, but I. Don't think there is anything that tires one so as being chosen to lead, no matter how poor that leadership may be. It certainly creates an interest to one in the Society, and I hope you may all have the pleasure of being appointed some time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1919 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Sixth Annual Meeting at New Haven, February 17 and 18, 1920 I will say all used by our troops except a little purchased from the F rench - were manufactured by our laboratories at West Street. So far as I know the matter of sound-ranging equipment dur ing the active period of the war was the most closely guarded secret of the war. It was very closely guarded for the reason that the Allies had reason to believe that they had a better means, a better apparatus for locating the position of enemy guns than did the Germans; and for the further reason that they did not know of any of their secrets having leaked out. The result was that when we were set at the task of developing and completing this apparatus, we were impressed with the necessity of keeping everything very secret; and when we set to work to manufacture this apparatus the pieces were manufactured under faked names and in different places, and the assembling work, which was nor mally entrusted to mechanics, was actually done by two or three very high-priced and reliable engineers, who with their own hands assembled the apparatus, adjusted it, tested it out, boxed it up, sealed the boxes, and turned it over to the military forces for shipment to France. As a matter of fact, although I was in uniform and in charge of these laboratories, I found it difficult to get into the rooms where this work was done. The guards were very suspicious of everyone, and unless you had proper credentials, they would not let you in. Whenever the rooms were left, the locks were sealed and the seals stamped with the time, and were not supposed to be opened except by properly accredited Officers. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Transactions for 1915 and Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Annual Meeting at New Haven, February 15 and 16, 1916 Following the suggestion which former President Crandall made in his address last winter, viz.: that the society Should have more frequent meetings for the purpose of giving the mem bers a better Opportunity to get acquainted, we have held smokers at each of the following cities: New Haven, Hartford, New London, New Britain, and Bridgeport. The average attendance at these gatherings has been fifty. N 0 special effort was made to make these meetings instructive, the principal object being to make and renew acquaintances. Everyone was tagged with his name, the tag serving a double purpose, first for identification, and incidentally for the benefit of those who might temporarily forget themselves, or be afraid to go home in the dark. My suggestion to the incoming president is that the larger cities be encouraged to form local branches of the society, and that each branch hold an occasional smoker or give an entertain ment for all members of the society who can attend. Such a movement will relieve the president and secretary of a great amount of work and tend to create a greater interest, and I believe will result In a decided increase in membership. At these meetings, and more especially at the annual banquets, a half hour Should be devoted by the officers to receiving members, particular attention being paid to the younger men. I hope the programme of the future banquets will Show just when and where such receptions will be held. Our summer meeting and clambake was held at North Bran ford, at the headquarters of the New Haven trap rock quarries.
