Employing qualitative and quantitative analysis, it presents empirical evidence suggesting persistent economic growth. The research highlights improvements in infrastructure, health care, education, poverty alleviation as well reductions in infant mortality rate. The impact of this economic growth has however had led to only slight improvements in the plight of the poor. The author argues that, while significant steps have been achieved with measurable economic gains, there are still undeniable obstacles within the federal system: prevailing patron-client relationships, constraints on state capacity to efficiently and effectively implement policy, and bureaucratic rent-seeking in the provision of public goods. The author concludes that these problems will have to be resolved before Ethiopia’s political economy can achieve the stage of sustainable development

Highlights MNCs' contribution to global economy and how their business strategies shape the evolution of GVCs. The chapter also compares MNCs' business strategies in terms of outsourcing and offshoring, risk mitigation and increasing market power across GVC archetypes. 3. Domestic firm perspectives on GVC participation. Looks at the various paths domestic firms can take to internationalize their production and trade. Investigates domestic firm characteristics that predict higher GVC participation, and the effect of GVC participation on firm performance. 4. Summarizes the various policy instruments governments have at their disposal to help attract MNCs to their country and facilitate GVC participation of domestic firms. 5. These countries are: (1) Kenya (horticulture); (2) Dominican Republic (textiles); (3) Mauritius (tourism); (4) Malaysia (electronics); (5) China (software). • Two quantitative case studies: Rwanda, West-Bengal (India). These use a combination of firm- and transaction level datasets to study firm-level dynamics that explain the role of multinational and domestic firms across GVCs.

During the 1976 election campaign, President Gerald Ford decided that he had to find a country that would break the OPEC monopoly and sell the U.S. oil more cheaply. On the advice of Treasury Secretary William Simon -- and against the advice of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger -- Ford made a deal to sell advanced weaponry to the Saudis in exchange for a more moderate price hike in oil. The Shah's economy was destabilized, and disaffected elements mobilized to overthrow him. The U.S. had embarked on a long relationship with the autocratic Saudi kingdom that continues to this day.

Capitals are heterogeneous through time and space; at the same time, various heterogeneous capitals must be aggregated, as shown by Ricardo and Keynes. On the other hand, the value of some quantity of aggregate capital changes over time, as demonstrated by Ricardo, Keynes and Stiglitz. For this purpose, this book considers Ricardo, Keynes and Stiglitz. For each author, capital is heterogeneous: Ricardo, from his labor theory; Keynes from the change in expectations, in regard to the return of such capital; and Stiglitz from the divergences between the different groups’ expectations. Ricardo was the first author who explained why the value of capital cannot be determined independently from distribution variables and consequently why such value changes when distribution variables change — this mechanism was deepened by Sraffa and the neo-Ricardian school. Keynes, with the concept of supply price of capital, explains why such value moves in regard to long-term expectations. Finally, Stiglitz’s analysis is a complementary approach in regard to Keynes’s, insofar as he details the mechanism of speculation observed by Keynes from asymmetries of information. Keynes and Stiglitz’s approaches allow complement Ricardo’s analysis, insofar expectations are absent from Ricardo’s framework. This book argues that epistemological choices allow going beyond the traditional opposition between neo-Ricardian and post-Keynesian approaches, introducing path dependence mechanisms and an “expectational” dimension. From the moment that capital is not a constant value over time and space, it is not possible anymore to consider a well-behaved production function, which this book argues implies refuting all the neoclassical framework, from the stability of the macroeconomic equilibrium and the Marshallian market equilibrium to the convergence towards the steady state.
