Book Threat To Development

Download or read book Threat To Development written by William Loehr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from transferring resources from the rich to the poor, as intended, the New International Economic Order (NIEO)—if fully implemented—is more likely to transfer them from the poor to the rich. Thus assert the authors, who present their analysis of trade and investment data in support of their conclusions. The NIEO, a program adopted by the United Nations, proposes increased prices of primary products, tariff preferences for exports of less developed countries to the industrial world, a code of conduct for multinational corporations, international monetary reform, debt forgiveness or rescheduling for the third world, plus a number of other provisions designed to help third world countries. But, the authors contend, all these provisions will further enrich the already rich within the third world, while adding to the poverty of the already poor. Higher prices for primary products would benefit the rich producers at the expense of the poor who buy them. Debt rescheduling would help only those rich enough to incur debt in the first place; because aid is available in finite quantities, this help might be at the expense of the poor. Likewise, trade preferences would also help the rich, who are the major exporters. The NIEO has been widely acclaimed in industrialized as well as in third world countries; this book demonstrates how the effects of the NIEO could well be the opposite from what is widely believed.

Book Management and Economic Development

Download or read book Management and Economic Development written by A.R. Negandhi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ping-pong diplomacy and its aftermath discussion, coupled with the entry of communist China into the United Nations and the subsequent expulsion of Taiwan, will generate considerable political dialogue about the changing balance of power and the fate of the other China. These political discussions will obviously overshadow the true role and function of the existence of Taiwan. Given the time, Taiwan could become a model for the development process for other emerging countries. Taiwan's experience with eco nomic development has real relevance for many countries. For exam ple, in less than two decades Taiwan has achieved the industrial and economic growth that should well make it the envy of nearly all other developing nations. Its per capita income is exceeded only by Japan among the countries of the Far East. Yet, despite vigorous economic and industrial growth, obvious breakdowns in this economic progress come into view. The lack of managerial input threatens to become a real bottleneck. The study reported in this volume examines the feasibility and utility of transferring advanced management know-how and practices into the industrial enterprises in Taiwan in order to generate further economic and industrial growth. The study itself concerns management practices and effectiveness of American subsidiaries, Japanese sub sidiaries, and comparable local firms in Taiwan.

Book Law and Politics of West East Technology Transfer

Download or read book Law and Politics of West East Technology Transfer written by Hiroshi Oda and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on an international conference at the University of Tokyo on CoCom and its related export control system'. Despite the changes in the overall political climate, such as the new thinking' in Soviet foreign policy, it seems that CoCom will continue to function for some years. Although the scope of control has been narrowed, the control itself has been tightened. All the old problems which caused conflicts within and outside CoCom still exist. The United States is still exercising export controls in an extra-territorial way via its extensive re-export control system. The 1988 Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act remains unaltered, notwithstanding its controversial nature. This book is a major contribution to the discussion of current legal and political issues concerning export controls, a discussion which has gained greatly in importance as a result of the Gulf crisis.
