Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library and Society: Reprints of Papers and Addresses It may be desirable to repeat here the warning that the word classics in the title of this series is to be understood as meaning early and standard expressions of ideas that have later developed into prominence. The papers and addresses in this volume have been chosen especially with this in view, and as they emphasize social relations an effort has been made to include expressions from men of eminence whose names would not probably occur 'to the student of library economy as having ex pressed an opinion about the work of libraries or as having influenced it in any permanent way. I desire to acknowledge the kindly assistance ren dered in the selection and grouping of the articles by Mrs. Gertrude Gilbert Drury, chief instructor in the St. Louis Library School. It has been most valuable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Addresses and Papers Classic Reprint written by Andrew Sloan Draper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Papers There are still other people, and many of them, who do not take the trouble to think about the matter, who care for little which does not promise advantage to themselves, and who lack the taste or the energy for political activity. They keep quiet, refrain from stirring opposition, and take advantage of any wind from any quarter. When they want something, they want it very badly. Then they can not understand why every interest should not turn aside for theirs. Seeking something, they think that the laws and rules are made only to fool the uninitiated, and when disappointed they are very skeptical about square and honest men in public life. Passing for most excellent people, professing rectitude, and possessing it so long as no selfish interest is in the way, they are singularly deaf to all reason and blind to all principle when a real test comes and conscience toys with temptation. Download or read book Scientific Papers and Addresses Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by George Rolleston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Papers and Addresses, Vol. 2 Having recently had occasion to study the habits and anatomy of the English Marten Cats, Mustela martes and Mustela foina, and having looked into the history of these animals and of certain other carnivora which have borne the same name as they in ancient and modern times, I have come to think that the latter of the two creatures specified namely, the white-breasted marten, Mustela foina, was the animal which the ancient Greeks and Romans employed for the same domestic purposes for which we employ the Felis domesticus; whilst this latter animal has been employed as at present in Western Europe for probably a considerably longer period than the last thousand years. Other writers to whom I have referred, and amongst them notably Dureau de la Malle, have adopted the former of these conclusions; but upon premises more or less inadequate or incorrect or both. I am well assured that this question has for the philosophic naturalist much more than a merely archaeological interest, for in the resolving of it we may have light cast upon the working of the principle which Mr. Darwin has shown to be more potent than any other in regulating the distribution of species, and which Van Beneden, with the well-known physiological aphorisms of Wolff and Treviranus before his eyes, has formulated in the words, 'les etres qui composent une Faune sont solidaires entre eux comma les organes d'un etre vivant.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses, State Papers and Letters It has been said, "Light sorrows speak, great grief is dumb," and the application of this would enforce my silence on this occasion. But I cannot go so far, nor let the hour pass without adding a tribute of respect and love for my departed friend. He was my friend in the most sacred and complete sense of the term. I have walked with him, talked with him, ate with him, and slept with him - was he not my friend? I must not, dare not, recall the memories of our long and loving friendship. And let not my brethren think it amiss if I force back the thoughts which come crowding to my mind. I shall speak coldly of my friend; but the most sacred tribute of a sad heart, believe me, is unspoken. In the course of a life not entirely devoid of startling incidents, I can truly say I never was so shocked and overwhelmed as when I heard, on Friday night, of the death of Oscar Folsom. I had an engagement with him that evening, and was momentarily expecting him when I received the intelligence of his injury; and before I reached the scene of the accident I was abruptly told of his death; I shall not attempt to describe my emotions. Book Addresses and Papers

Download or read book Addresses and Papers written by Andrew S. Draper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Papers: 1911 1912 It is a genuine satisfaction to participate in your celebration of the accomplishments of the first twenty-five years in the life of this young university. As universities go, Temple University is yet very young. I have wandered about the halls of universities that have been six hundred or eight hundred years in the building. The oldest of our American universities is looking forward to its three hundredth anniversary. It certainly takes time to develop a great university, but we in America have a way of building universities more rapidly than they do in other lands or than they used to do in this country. That fact finds splendid illustration in the growth of this institution. Our celebration will not recall history and tradition very much; it will not be very boastful of gray-headed "old grads" gone to the United States Senate or Supreme Court; it will not be a solemn festival where old men have all the good seats and indulge in reminiscences; but it will be a sort of hilarious expression of the energy, the accomplishments, the hopes, and the determination of youth. While I am no longer a young man as years go, I am bound to say that this kind of a celebration is not without exceedingly attractive features. Temple University is not only young; it is democratic. It is not exclusive socially or educationally. It gives warm welcome to all who can do its work. It recognizes the fact that work done gives the best promise of the power to do, and it therefore regards records and certificates; but it does not believe, or even half-way believe, that the people of the United States are to be classified and one class educated and another not; and it does not believe, or even half-way believe, that all education worth the name is ancient and literary, and that all education that is modern or industrial is hardly worth the having. On the contrary, it believes that every one should have his chance; that the door of opportunity should open to the earnest purpose and to the power to do; and that the education which enters into life and makes life better worth the living is the education that is of the most worth and that most surely concerns American universities. Book Papers and Addresses Vol 3 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Papers and Addresses Vol 3 of 3 Classic Reprint written by William Henry Welch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Addresses, Vol. 3 of 3 Your attention will be called with just pride today to the achievements of this university during the first decade of its existence. Its contributions to letters and to science, its high standard of education and its usefulness in many directions are themes which are appropriate to the occasion. But in celebrating the past and the present we look forward with courage and enthusiasm to the future. For this future the subject which is now uppermost in the plans and the councils of the university is the establishment and the development of the medical department, in accordance with the conception of the munificent founder of the university and of the hospital. As the past ten years have witnessed the development of the philosophical department to its present position of high achievement and active usefulness, so it is hoped that the close of another decade will look back upon a similar record of good work and of progress in the medical department. The higher purposes of medical education can be attained only by the establishment of well equipped laboratories and by the foundation of hospitals. For these, in a country where advanced education is dependent upon private benevolence, endowments are necessary. It is not a little remarkable that the first considerable bequest for the beneficent purposes of medical education in this country was made by the farsighted founder of this university, whose example in this respect has already been an inspiration for others to follow. It is a wise provision that the medical department has been placed in organic connection with the other departments of the university; that it is coordinate with these. The relation which universities and medical schools should bear to each other has given rise to no little discussion in several of the universities of Europe, and the conclusion has been reached that for many reasons the interests of each are best subserved by making the medical school a department of the university, rather than by the foundation of independent schools of medicine. Besides the fact that certain branches of study belong equally to the philosophical and to the medical faculty, or are upon the border line between these, experience has shown that this connection conduces to greater solidity, to a more elevated tone, and to a broader and more enlightened system of medical education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seminary Addresses and Other Papers The following pages, representing a selection of Papers and Addresses delivered on various occasions, were intended to appear in the form of a volume some three years ago in commemoration of the Tenth Anniversary of the re-organization of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Illness and other untoward circumstances prevented me from giving my attention to their publication until lately. But it is this delay which made it possible to include the last five papers. These papers lay no claim to the attainments of rhetoric, which are unfortunately beyond my powers, nor will the reader find in them any indulgence in abstruse learning, which, even if it were within my reach, would be out of place in popular Addresses like these. The references to Rabbinic literature were mostly omitted for the same reason. All 1 endeavored to do was to express my thoughts in plain and direct language, in which I hope I did not entirely fail.
