Book A Centennial Celebration of The Brownies Book

Download or read book A Centennial Celebration of The Brownies Book written by Dianne Johnson-Feelings and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Jani L. Barker, Rudine Sims Bishop, Julia S. Charles-Linen, Paige Gray, Dianne Johnson-Feelings, Jonda C. McNair, Sara C. VanderHaagen, and Michelle Taylor Watts The Brownies’ Book occupies a special place in the history of African American children’s literature. Informally the children’s counterpart to the NAACP’s The Crisis magazine, it was one of the first periodicals created primarily for Black youth. Several of the objectives the creators delineated in 1919 when announcing the arrival of the publication—“To make them familiar with the history and achievements of the Negro race” and “To make colored children realize that being ‘colored’ is a beautiful, normal thing”—still resonate with contemporary creators, readers, and scholars of African American children’s literature. The meticulously researched essays in A Centennial Celebration of "The Brownies’ Book" get to the heart of The Brownies’ Book “project” using critical approaches both varied and illuminating. Contributors to the volume explore the underappreciated role of Jessie Redmon Fauset in creating The Brownies’ Book and in the cultural life of Black America; describe the young people who immersed themselves in the pages of the periodical; focus on the role of Black heroes and heroines; address The Brownies’ Book in the context of critical literacy theory; and place The Brownies’ Book within the context of Black futurity and justice. Bookending the essays are, reprinted in full, the first and last issues of the magazine. A Centennial Celebration of "The Brownies’ Book" illuminates the many ways in which the magazine—simultaneously beautiful, complicated, problematic, and inspiring—remains worthy of attention well into this century.

Book Concepts in Film Theory

Download or read book Concepts in Film Theory written by J. Dudley Andrew and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1984-03-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepts in Film Theory is a continuation of Dudley Andrew's classic, The Major Film Theories. In writing now about contemporary theory, Andrew focuses on the key concepts in film study -- perception, representation, signification, narrative structure, adaptation, evaluation, identification, figuration, and interpretation. Beginning with an introductory chapter on the current state of film theory, Andrew goes on to build an overall view of film, presenting his own ideas on each concept, and giving a sense of the interdependence of these concepts. Andrew provides lucid explanations of theories which involve perceptual psychology and structuralism; semiotics and psychoanalysis; hermeneutics and genre study. His clear approach to these often obscure theories enables students to acquire the background they need to enrich their understanding of film -- and of art.

Book Law Science Liberalism and the American Way of Warfare

Download or read book Law Science Liberalism and the American Way of Warfare written by Stephanie Carvin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded and rooted in Enlightenment values, the United States is caught between two conflicting imperatives when it comes to war: achieving perfect security through the annihilation of threats; and a requirement to conduct itself in a liberal and humane manner. In order to reconcile these often clashing requirements, the US has often turned to its scientists and laboratories to find strategies and weapons that are both decisive and humane. In effect, a modern faith in science and technology to overcome life's problems has been utilized to create a distinctly 'American Way of Warfare'. Carvin and Williams provide a framework to understand the successes and failures of the US in the wars it has fought since the days of the early Republic through to the War on Terror. It is the first book of its kind to combine a study of technology, law and liberalism in American warfare.

Book Early Cinema

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Elsaesser
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2019-07-25
  • ISBN : 1838715479
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Early Cinema written by Thomas Elsaesser and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty years preceding the First World War, cinema rapidly developed from a fairground curiosity into a major industry and social institution, a source of information and entertainment for millions of people. Only recently have film scholars and historians begun to study these early years of cinema in their own right and not simply as first steps towards the classical narrative cinema we now associate with Hollywood. The essays in this collection trace the fascinating history of how the cinema developed its forms of storytelling and representation and how it evolved into a complex industry with Hollywood rapidly acquiring a dominant role. These issues can be seen to arise from new readings of the so-called pioneers - Melies, Lumiere, Porter, and Griffith - while also suggesting new perspectives on major European filmmakers of the 1910s and 20s. Editor Thomas Elsaesser complements the contributions from leading British, American, and European scholars with introductory essays of his own that provide a comprehensive overview of the field. The volume is the most authoritative survey to date of a key area of contemporary film research, invaluable to historians as well as to students of cinema.
