Book Early Papers on Diffraction of X rays by Crystals

Download or read book Early Papers on Diffraction of X rays by Crystals written by J.M. Bijvoet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Preface to Early Papers on Diffraction of X-rays by Crystals Volume I (containing Chapters I-V and published in 1969), the history and planning of the complete book were outlined. The publication in two separate and consecutive volumes was merely a matter of management; the compilation of both volumes was done at the same time. There is a distinct difference in subject-matter between both volumes: Volume I contains the fundamentals of the theory, while Volume II treats the practical development of the 'trial' -method and the genesis and first applications of the Fourier method. In the period covered by Early Papers (1912-1935), the trial method leads to the successful conquest of structures with up to a hundred parameters. We conclude the book with Patterson's discovery (1934) of the p2-series as described in his second, more detailed and extended paper of 1935. With this method the apparatus was completed which led to the present undreamt-of successes of the Fourier method in the field of organic chemistry. We have considered the inclusion of Robertson's famous synthesis of the structure of phtalocyanine (1936). However, we decided that its proper place would be at the beginning of a book which, no doubt, will appear one day, describing this later period. Considerations of space caused us to give up the chapter on Texture planned at first.

Book Mechanics And Mathematics Of Crystals Selected Papers Of J L Ericksen

Download or read book Mechanics And Mathematics Of Crystals Selected Papers Of J L Ericksen written by Jerald L Ericksen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-04-13 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique and comprehensive collection of pioneering contributions to the mechanics of crystals by J L Ericksen, a prominent and leading contributor to the study of the mechanics and mathematics of crystalline solids over the past 35 years. It presents a splendid corpus of research papers that cover areas on crystal symmetry, constitutive equations, defects and phase transitions — all topics of current importance to a broad group of workers in the field. The volume thus provides in one place material that is frequently referenced by numerous researchers on crystals across a spectrum of activities in areas of continuum mechanics, applied mathematics, engineering and materials science. Each group of papers or chapters in the book is preceded by a summary introduction that describes how the papers on that topic fit together, and in which Ericksen sketches the context of each paper and shares with the reader his thinking and insightfulness in writing it. The volume, edited by internationally renowned scholars whose works in finite elasticity and continuum mechanics have appeared in a variety of books and prestigious journals published over the past four decades, also includes a very interesting brief autobiography by Ericksen. In it he describes his early life in Oregon, his wartime experiences, his student days and postgraduate study, his introduction to scientific work, and what motivated him in his research. An English translation and revision of the first paper in this volume, originally published in Russian, appears here for the first time.

Book Growth of Crystals

    Book Details:
  • Author : N. N. Sheftal'
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461342562
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Growth of Crystals written by N. N. Sheftal' and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tenth volume completes the first series of "Growth of Crystals," which began in 1957. The sources of the volumes are as follows: for Vol. I, the 1st All-Union Conference on Crystal Growth; for Vol. 3, the 2nd; and for Vols. 5 and 6, the 3rd; Vols. 7 and 8 reported the International Symposium on Crystal Growth at the Seventh International Crystallography Con gress, and Vol. 9 the 1969 symposium on crystal growth dedicated to E. S. Fedorov; Vols. 2, 4, and 10 did not originate in conferences. The main problem that largely occupied the conferences and symposia and also the inter mediate volumes was that of real crystal formation, as well as the relation of crystal growth theory to practical crystal production. This tenth volume, which completes this first series, is to a considerable extent a survey. It contains more extensive theoretical and experimental original papers, as well as some shorter papers dealing with particular but important aspects of real crystal formation. The volume opens with a paper by V. V. Voronkov, which deals with the structure of crystal surface in Kossel's model. The model as proposed by Kossel is extremely simple. It deals qualitatively with the basic trends in the growth of an idealized crystal in its own va por at absolute zero, and naturally does not allow one to perform quantitative studies on com plex real processes.

Book Structure and Bonding in crystals

Download or read book Structure and Bonding in crystals written by Michael O'Keeffe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure and Bonding in Crystals presents a new understanding of the older topics such as bond length, bond strength, and ionic radii. These concepts have been used by geochemists and geophysicists to systematize and predict phase transitions at high pressure. The final group of chapters deals with the problems of classifying complex solids and with systematic descriptions of the relationships between their structures. This book comprises 13 chapters, with the first presenting a historical perspective by Linus Pauling. The following chapters then go on to discuss quantum theory and crystal chemistry; pseudopotentials and crystal structure; quantum-defect orbital radii and the structural chemistry of simple solids; and a pseudopotential viewpoint of the electronic and structural properties of crystals. Other chapters cover elementary quantitative theory of chemical bonding; the role and significance of empirical and semiempirical correlations; theoretical probes of bonding in the disiloxy group; a comparison of experimental and theoretical bond length and angle variations; the role of nonbonded forces in crystals; molecules within infinite solids; charge density distributions; and some aspects of the ionic model of crystals. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of chemistry, physics, and geology.
