Book Pawpaw

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Moore
  • Publisher : Chelsea Green Publishing
  • Release : 2015-08-05
  • ISBN : 1603585974
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Pawpaw written by Andrew Moore and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest edible fruit native to the United States tastes like a cross between a banana and a mango. It grows wild in twenty-six states, gracing Eastern forests each fall with sweet-smelling, tropical-flavored abundance. Historically, it fed and sustained Native Americans and European explorers, presidents, and enslaved African Americans, inspiring folk songs, poetry, and scores of place names from Georgia to Illinois. Its trees are an organic grower’s dream, requiring no pesticides or herbicides to thrive, and containing compounds that are among the most potent anticancer agents yet discovered. So why have so few people heard of the pawpaw, much less tasted one? In Pawpaw—a 2016 James Beard Foundation Award nominee in the Writing & Literature category—author Andrew Moore explores the past, present, and future of this unique fruit, traveling from the Ozarks to Monticello; canoeing the lower Mississippi in search of wild fruit; drinking pawpaw beer in Durham, North Carolina; tracking down lost cultivars in Appalachian hollers; and helping out during harvest season in a Maryland orchard. Along the way, he gathers pawpaw lore and knowledge not only from the plant breeders and horticulturists working to bring pawpaws into the mainstream (including Neal Peterson, known in pawpaw circles as the fruit’s own “Johnny Pawpawseed”), but also regular folks who remember eating them in the woods as kids, but haven’t had one in over fifty years. As much as Pawpaw is a compendium of pawpaw knowledge, it also plumbs deeper questions about American foodways—how economic, biologic, and cultural forces combine, leading us to eat what we eat, and sometimes to ignore the incredible, delicious food growing all around us. If you haven’t yet eaten a pawpaw, this book won’t let you rest until you do.

Book Beyond the Pawpaw Trees

Download or read book Beyond the Pawpaw Trees written by Palmer Brown and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It all began on a lavender blue day—the kind of day when anything can happen. It was on such a day that Anna Lavinia’s father saw a double rainbow and went chasing after it. And it is on such a day that she and her cat, Strawberry, set off on their journey beyond the walled garden where the pawpaw trees grow, to a place where the buttercups bloom pink and the laws of gravity don’t always apply. Here Anna Lavinia will test her mother’s advice “Never believe what you see,” against her father’s wise words “Believe only what you see,” and just maybe she’ll finally be able to use the mysterious silver key her father left behind when he went chasing after rainbows. Beyond the Pawpaw Trees is a tour through a land as strange and wonderful as Oz, filled with people as delightfully batty as any in Alice’s looking glass. It is a place to return to again and again, beautifully brought to life in Palmer Brown’s fanciful words and intricate, sugar-spun drawings.

Book excerpt: A collection of essays that are "like being seated beside the most entertaining guest at a dinner party" (Atlanta Journal Constitution), from the New York Times bestselling author of American Housewives “Thank you Helen Ellis for writing down the Southern Lady Code so that others may learn.” —Ann Patchett, bestselling author of The Dutch House Helen Ellis has a mantra: “If you don't have something nice to say, say something not-so-nice in a nice way.” Say “weathered” instead of “she looks like a cake left out in the rain” and “I’m not in charge” instead of “they’re doing it wrong.” In these twenty-three raucous essays, Ellis transforms herself into a dominatrix Donna Reed to save her marriage, inadvertently steals a Burberry trench coat, avoids a neck lift, and finds a black-tie gown that gives her the confidence of a drag queen. While she may have left Alabama for New York City, Helen Ellis is clinging to her Southern accent like mayonnaise to white bread, and offering readers a hilarious, completely singular view on womanhood for both sides of the Mason-Dixon.

Book The Jasper Love Trilogy

  • ISBN : 1489725342
  • Pages : 534 pages

Download or read book The Jasper Love Trilogy written by Onyx Cantor and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of one man’s triumph over Cult Religion. As a preacher’s son, Jasper Love struggled to comply with the dogma and bigotry of the unpredictably changeable Doctrine of Good Enough dictated by Cult Religion. He and four sisters labored to comply with cult demands consistent with their mother’s mantra: “People expect preacher’s kids to be perfect.” The Voice of Truth (bestowed on Jasper as a child in a genuine salvation encounter with Jesus Christ) conflicts with voices of deception from pulpits and pews, triggering crippling anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Further compounding his confusion is a terrifying awareness of the cult’s distortion of scripture concerning his innate identity. When a Connecticut preacher detects his private struggle, the Bible scholar promises: “If you marry a good Pentecostal girl, this thing will just fade away.” Jasper foolishly accepts the challenge, believing that the pastor’s counsel is based on Truth. A 32-year battle ensues, during which a Pentecostal preacher’s daughter who, aware of his struggle and trained in Exploitation of Advantage, manipulates and controls the miserable husband who strives to suppress and conceal an innate identity which “simply won’t leave me alone.” Cultists despise his genuine relationship with God when the Holy Spirit weakens the tenacious grasp of the antiChrist’s claim on his soul, rescuing him from abominable doctrines through Spiritual Enlightenment to Truth Absolute. Spiritual Warfare ensues, during which he is molested by authority figures, betrayed by cult dishonesty, falls into sin, is attacked by demons, and is delivered by the Holy Ghost through visions of spiritual combat between the demons of Cult Religion and the Angels of Truth. In the end, his foolish attempt to conform with the Doctrine of Good Enough predictably results in the destruction of everything he wasted a lifetime building: marriage, family, home, career, material wealth, and reputation. Yet, in losing all, he is delivered from the Darkness of cult idolatry, whereupon he is finally free to immerse himself in genuine Truth, Light, and Love, breaking the tyrannical chains of Cult Religion. Released by the Holy Spirit from cult bondage, he is at last unleashed to fulfill his destiny: To teach the Truth about Jasper Love (that boundless, unconditional love known only to those who genuinely experience Spiritual Enlightenment) to a people deceived by the hateful harlots of idolatry who are nothing more than power-crazed, authoritarian, self-aggrandizing, despotic antiChrist heretics who worship only one god - CONTROL.

Book Hobson Jobson

  • Pages : 617 pages

Download or read book Hobson Jobson written by Henry Yule and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A glossary of colloquial Anglo-Indian words and phrases, and of kindred terms, etymological, historical, geographical and discursive.' Hobson-Jobson is a unique work of maverick scholarship. Compiled in 1886 by two India enthusiasts, it documents the words and phrases that entered English from Arabic, Persian, Indian, and Chinese sources - and vice versa. Described by Salman Rushdie as 'the legendary dictionary of British India' it shows how words of Indian origin were absorbed into the English language and records not only the vocabulary but the culture of the Raj. Illustrative quotations from a wide range of travel texts, histories, memoirs, and novels create a canon of English writing about India. The definitions frequently slip into anecdote, reminiscence, and digression, and they offer intriguing insights into Victorian attitudes to India and its people and customs. With its delight in language, etymology, and puns, Hobson-Jobson has fascinated generations of writers from Rudyard Kipling to Tom Stoppard and Amitav Ghosh. This selected edition retains the range and idiosyncrasy of the original, and includes fascinating information on the glossary's creation and its significance for the English language. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book excerpt: During the peak of the COVID 19 pandemic, there seemed to be turmoil and chaos everywhere I looked. We were surrounded by illness, death, loss of jobs, business closures, political debacles, and just for fun, a couple of hurricanes and tornadoes. Life was quite chaotic. I began writing words of encouragement for myself, and soon began sharing them on my blog page. Each morning, I would settle in at my huge kitchen table or out on my back deck, and I prayed, “Give me a word, Lord.” Every day, God gave me a topical word, and from that, a devotional flowed from my keyboard. The words were truly God inspired. My sister and my husband challenged me to continue writing for 365 days, and I accepted the challenge. I thought I would run out of words, but oh no, not this wordy girl! God designed this old girl, and He gave me the gift of gab. Through daily Bible reading, research, and writing of these devotionals, I have grown closer in my walk with Christ, and my good, good God calmed the chaos in my heart day after day. I pray that you too will find solace in these words. May you find calm in the chaos of life.
