Book Papa Remembers

Download or read book Papa Remembers written by Anthony J. DiFiore and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why am I writing my memoirs? Several months ago, my Grandson, Steven, said: Papa, you should write all the stories that you have been telling us all these years. Some day you will not be around to tell those wonderful stories anymore. If I had a booklet or some kind of way to tell the stories to my children or hopefully, my grand children, I would be a happy man. So as a result, I decided to write this book. Normally, people do not look to write a novel at the age of 78. however; I have decided to give it a try. I am a normal man of 78 years of age, in my retirement years and love life. I adore God, love my family and friends and Honor my Country, America. I guess I should start by letting you know something about me and my family. I am married to my wife, Roseanne, for 53 years and 5 months. Life with Roseanne has been wonderful. We have three children, Graceanne, 51, Steven, 48 and Anthony, 45. Graceanne is married to my son-in-law, Christopher, Steven is married to my daughter-in law, Jennifer and Anthony is married to my daughter-in-law, Theresa. We have 13 grand children and one great grand daughter. The children are Melanie,36, Rachel,34, Steven,26, Nicholas,24, Courtney, 20, Nichole,20, Christopher,17, Melina,13, Samantha,10, Michael,9, Mackenzy,8, Allyson,4, Isabella 1, and Zoe Emma,1. Thank God, they are all in good health and Beautiful and Handsome individuals.

I am the youngest, and I never knew my mother because I was barely one and a half when she died. My papa, alone through our upbringing, gave us advanced university education, overseas study, and piano, voice, and dancing lessons. We all learned to speak several languages. And on I could go about how he dedicated his whole life to the six of usall of whom, along with him, are in heaven, except yours truly. Sylvia Liberati Rooney-Rosencrans

When Robert Frost was a child, his family thought he would grow up to be a baseball player. Instead, he became a poet. His life on a farm in New Hampshire inspired him to write "poetry that talked," and today he is famous for his vivid descriptions of the rural life he loved so much. There was a time, though, when Frost had to struggle to get his poetry published. Told from the point of view of Lesley, Robert Frost's oldest daughter, this is the story of how a lover of language found his voice.

She grew up feeling not pretty enough for her father and not good enough for her mother. Her life revolved around her emotionally unavailable father, who blew in and out of her life. Rita longed for a normal family life, and the incessant hunger for acceptance left the growing girl wanting much more. Always looking for signs that her papa loved her, she lived on an emotional rollercoaster of hope and disappointment. Wanting only to be loved, Rita hurled herself into many relationships. Meanwhile, life with her controlling mother bred low self-esteem and self-doubt, leaving her feeling inadequate, unloved, and unwanted. Now, in her memoir, she recalls her lifelong search for her father's love and explores how she came to terms with its effects on her life.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Marine Corps' Combined Action Program (CAP) in Vietnam was an enlightened gesture of strategic dissent. Recognizing that search-and-destroy operations were immoral and self-defeating and that the best hope for victory was "winning hearts and minds," the Corps stationed squads of Marines, augmented by Navy corpsmen, in the countryside to train and patrol alongside village self-defense units called Popular Forces. Corporal Edward F. Palm became a combined-action Marine in 1967. His memoir recounts his experiences fighting with the South Vietnamese, his readjustment to life after the war, and the circumstances that prompted him to join the Corps in the first place. A one-time aspiring photojournalist, Palm includes photographs he took while serving, along with an epilogue describing what he and his former sergeant found during their 2002 return to Vietnam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuation of a groundbreaking study of the Rwandan genocide, and the story of the survivor generation In Rwanda from April to June 1994, 800,000 Tutsis were slaughtered by their Hutu neighbors in the largest and swiftest genocide since World War II. In his previous books, Jean Hatzfeld has documented the lives of the killers and victims, but after twenty years he has found that the enormity of understanding doesn’t stop with one generation. In Blood Papa, Hatzfeld returns to the hills and marshes of Nyamata to ask what has become of the children—those who never saw the machetes yet have grown up in the shadow of tragedy. Fabrice, Sandra, Jean-Pierre, and others share the genocide as a common inheritance. Some have known only their parents’ silence and lies, enduring the harassment of classmates or the stigma of a father jailed for unspeakable crimes. Others have enjoyed a loving home and the sympathies offered to survivor children, but do so without parents or an extended family. The young Rwandans in Blood Papa see each other in the neighborhood—they dance and gossip, frequent the same cafés, and, like teenagers everywhere, love sports, music, and fashion; they surf the Web and dream of marriage. Yet Hutu and Tutsi children rarely speak of the ghosts that haunt their lives. Here their moving first-person accounts combined with Hatzfeld’s arresting chronicles of everyday life form a testament to survival in a country devastated by the terrible crimes and trauma of the past.

Download or read book Facing the Spears of Change written by Marie Alohalani Brown and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing the Spears of Change takes a close look at the extraordinary life of John Papa `Ī`ī. Over the years, `Ī`ī faced many personal and political changes and challenges in rapid succession, which he skillfully parried or seized, then used to fend off other attacks. He began serving in the household of Kamehameha I as an attendant in 1810, at the age of ten, and became highly familiar with the inner workings of the royal household. His early service took place in a time when ali`i nui (the highest-ranking Hawaiians) were considered divine and surrounded with strict kapu (sacred prohibitions); breaking a kapu pertaining to an ali`i meant death for the transgressor. He went on to become an influential statesman, privy to the shifting modes of governance adopted by the Hawaiian kingdom. `Ī`ī’s intelligence and his good standing with those he served resulted in a great degree of influence within the Hawaiian government, with his fellow Hawaiians, and with the missionaries residing in the Hawaiian Islands. As a privileged spectator and key participant, his published accounts of ali`i and his insights into early nineteenth-century Hawaiian cultural-religious practices are unsurpassed. In this groundbreaking work, Marie Alohalani Brown offers an elegantly written and compelling portrait of an important historical figure in nineteenth-century Hawai`i. Brown’s extensive archival research using Hawaiian and English language primary sources from the 1800s allows access to information which would be otherwise unknown but to a very small circle of researchers.
