Book The Wonder of Little Things

Download or read book The Wonder of Little Things written by Vince Copley and published by HarperCollins Australia. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A First Nations Elder shares his extraordinary story of finding kindness in the midst of prejudice, and joy in living life to the full 'A powerful tale that tells a different story of our country' Bruce Pascoe 'A great Australian book about a great Australian' Paul Kennedy 'Told with heart' Ali Cobby Eckermann 'Destined to become a classic' Phillip Adams 'Welcome to my story. It's a simple story of a simple person, who's lived a long life now with some struggles along the way. I didn't learn a lot in school, not in the classroom, anyway. But I learned a lot from life.' Vince Copley was born on a government mission into poverty in 1936. By the time he was fifteen, five of his family had died. But at a home for Aboriginal boys, he befriended future leaders Charles Perkins, John Moriarty and Gordon Briscoe. They were friendships that would last a lifetime. 'Always remember you're as good as anybody else,' his mother, Kate, often told him. And he was, becoming a champion footballer and premiership-winning coach. But change was in the air, and Vince knew he had more to contribute. So he teamed up with Charlie Perkins, his 'brother' from the boys' home, to help make life better for his people. At every step, with his beloved wife, Brenda, Vince found light in the darkness, the friendly face in the crowd, the small moments and little things that make the world go round. In The Wonder of Little Things, Vince tells his story with humour, humility and wisdom. Written with his friend Lea McInerney over many cups of tea, it is an Australian classic in the making, a plain-speaking account of hardship, courage and optimism told without self-pity or big-noting. Vince's love of life will make you smile, his heartache will make you cry, and his determination to enjoy life in the face of adversity will inspire you to find the wonder in little things every day.

Download or read book Live Forever written by Courtney S. Lennon and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billy Joe Shaver wrote nine of the ten songs included on Waylon Jennings’s landmark album Honky Tonk Heroes and played a dominant role in the origins and development of the Outlaw Country movement of the 1970s. He has been named by Ray Wylie Hubbard, alongside Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, as a member of the “holy trinity” of Texas songwriters. He has exerted a Texas-sized influence on Texas music and especially Texas singer-songwriters, and is cited as a chief inspiration by at least two generations of artists. But although his influence has been profound, Shaver has the dubious honor of becoming, according to author Courtney S. Lennon, “country music’s unsung hero.” In Live Forever: The Songwriting Legacy of Billy Joe Shaver, Lennon seeks to give Shaver the recognition his prolific output deserves. She unfolds for readers the complexity and the simplicity of the artist who wrote the songs that Brian T. Atkinson, in his foreword, calls “peaceful and pure, complex and convoluted, mad and merciful”—the musician who wrote “You Just Can’t Beat Jesus Christ” and “That’s What She Said Last Night,” “Honky Tonk Heroes,” and “Get Thee Behind Me Satan.” Based on in-depth interviews with a host of notable singer-songwriters, this book reveals and celebrates the saint and the sinner, the earthy intellectual and the hard-drinking commoner, the poet and the cowboy.

Book The Bee Man

  • Pages : 26 pages

Download or read book The Bee Man written by Wanda Phillips Hutchinson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state insect of North Carolina, honeybees have long been prized. Honey is mentioned in the earliest history books and in the Bible. In the past, many farmers have maintained several hives of bees which provided sweetening for cooking and baking, in addition to its customary use as a complement to many kinds of bread. Currently, beekeeping is experiencing somewhat of a revival with everything from equipment to classes for beginner and experienced beekeepers readily available. This is good news when one considers that 40% of the world's food supply depends on pollination provided by honeybees! In this story, Joe and Papa race along, following the honeybee that Papa has marked with flour on its back, until they reach the bee tree. In the early 1900's, bee coursing was done to help locate bee trees. The method involved sprinkling flour on the bee's back, noting its direction as it left, and then marking the amount of time required for the bee to arrive back at the water source. This practice gave an estimate of the distance to the bee tree. Knowing that honeybees fly in a straight line (beeline) to their destination once airborne, bee keepers could follow the direction taken by the honeybee to find the bee tree and gather the sticky, delicious honey.
