Book Panslavism and Germanism Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Panslavism and Germanism Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Count Valerian Krasinski and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Panslavism and Germanism, Vol. 1 The volume here presented to the public is the resume of a greater work on the same subject, at which the author has been labouring for some time, and in which he proposed fully to discuss the origin, the political and intellectual development and the present condition of the Slavonic nations. The revolutions of Europe within the last few months have, however, precipitated events, and the movements in the Southern and Western Slavonic countries, have already become of so much importance, that the author has deemed it advisable no longer to defer pressing upon the attention of the English public, matters which are perhaps tending to recast the whole political organisation of Europe. Book The Turk in the Czech Imagination 1870s 1923

Download or read book The Turk in the Czech Imagination 1870s 1923 written by Jitka Malečková and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In “The Turk” in the Czech Imagination (1870s-1923), Jitka Malečková describes Czechs’ views of the Turks in the last half century of the existence of the Ottoman Empire and how they were influenced by ideas and trends in other countries, including the European fascination with the Orient, images of “the Turk,” contemporary scholarship, and racial theories. The Czechs were not free from colonial ambitions either, as their attitude to Bosnia-Herzegovina demonstrates, but their viewpoint was different from that found in imperial states and among the peoples who had experienced Ottoman rule. The book convincingly shows that the Czechs mainly viewed the Turks through the lenses of nationalism and Pan-Slavism – in solidarity with the Slavs fighting against Ottoman rule.

Book Voyages and Travel Accounts in Historiography and Literature Volume 2

Download or read book Voyages and Travel Accounts in Historiography and Literature Volume 2 written by Boris Stojkovski and published by Trivent Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travelling is one of the most fascinating phenomena that has inspired writers and scholars from Antiquity to our postmodern age. The father of history, Herodotus, was also a traveller, whose Histories can easily be considered a travel account. The first volume of this book is dedicated to the period starting from Herodotus himself until the end of the Middle Ages with focus on the Balkans, the Byzantine Empire, the Islamic world, and South-Eastern Europe. Research on travellers who connected civilizations; manuscript and literary traditions; musicology; geography; flora and fauna as reflected in travel accounts, are all part of this thought-provoking collected volume dedicated to detailed aspects of voyages and travel accounts up to the end of the sixteenth century. The second volume of this book is dedicated to the period between Early Modernity and today, including modern receptions of travelling in historiography and literature. South-Eastern Europe and Serbia; the Chinese, Ottoman, and British perception of travelling; pilgrimages to the Holy land and other sacred sites; Serbian, Arabic, and English literature; legal history and travelling, and other engaging topics are all part of the second volume dedicated to aspects of voyages and travel accounts up to the contemporary era.

Book excerpt: One of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of the Year Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize (History) The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 is historian Christopher Clark’s riveting account of the explosive beginnings of World War I. Drawing on new scholarship, Clark offers a fresh look at World War I, focusing not on the battles and atrocities of the war itself, but on the complex events and relationships that led a group of well-meaning leaders into brutal conflict. Clark traces the paths to war in a minute-by-minute, action-packed narrative that cuts between the key decision centers in Vienna, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Paris, London, and Belgrade, and examines the decades of history that informed the events of 1914 and details the mutual misunderstandings and unintended signals that drove the crisis forward in a few short weeks. Meticulously researched and masterfully written, Christopher Clark’s The Sleepwalkers is a dramatic and authoritative chronicle of Europe’s descent into a war that tore the world apart.

Book The Anti enlightenment Tradition

Download or read book The Anti enlightenment Tradition written by Zeev Sternhell and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this masterful work of historical scholarship, Zeev Sternhell, an internationally renowned Israeli political scientist and historian, presents a controversial new view of the fall of democracy and the rise of radical nationalism in the twentieth century. Sternhell locates their origins in the eighteenth century with the advent of the Anti-Enlightenment, far earlier than most historians. The thinkers belonging to the Anti-Enlightenment (a movement originally identified by Friederich Nietzsche) represent a perspective that is antirational and that rejects the principles of natural law and the rights of man. Sternhell asserts that the Anti-Enlightenment was a development separate from the Enlightenment and sees the two traditions as evolving parallel to one another over time. He contends that J. G. Herder and Edmund Burke are among the real founders of the Anti-Enlightenment and shows how that school undermined the very foundations of modern liberalism, finally contributing to the development of fascism that culminated in the European catastrophes of the twentieth century.
