UAVs can assist WiSAR efforts by accelerating the ground search process through returning quality aerial footage of the terrain. Additionally, tracking the progress of a search by populating a digital map with video resolution data increases confidence that a comprehensive search of the region has been made.

Book P2prectify and MoB Video Mosaic for UAV Surveillance Applications

Download or read book P2prectify and MoB Video Mosaic for UAV Surveillance Applications written by Saengrawee Pratoomtong and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of video cameras onboard unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is a cost-effective alternative to traditional and aircraft platforms in surveillance and reconnaissance applications. Acquired video frames are often mosaicked into a panoramic image. Traditional image mosaic algorithms often yield distorted panoramic images and require excessive computational power, renders it unsuitable for time-critical applications. To address these challenges, we propose a Perspective-to-Parallel rectification (P2Prectify) and a Motion-Based video mosaic (MoB) algorithm. By recognizing that successive video frames acquired from UAVs are highly correlated and spatially dense, the execution time of a mosaic can be drastically reduced. As parallel projection images can be mosaicked efficiently, P2Prectify detects and rectifies perspective projection images prior to creating a mosaic without any [a priori] knowledge of the scene geological data or the UAV's camera parameters. Therefore, the accumulated error, caused by the scaling and skewing components of the projective transformations used to align the images, are eliminated. MoB video mosaic algorithm --- as its name may suggest --- uses motion information to facilitate the final panoramic image formation. MoB registration uses motion vectors of track points to estimate the camera motion. MoB composition consists of key frame and pixel selection mechanisms guided by the spatial distribution of the motion vectors. Because the motion vectors and their statistics can be obtained trivially, both MoB registration and composition are computationally simple and therefore can be implemented efficiently for real-time applications. Compared to the traditional feature-based image registration and stitching algorithms, the MoB algorithm exhibits significant improvement in both performance and execution time.

Book Automated Video Processing and Scene Understanding for Intelligent Video Surveillance

Download or read book Automated Video Processing and Scene Understanding for Intelligent Video Surveillance written by Yu-Chia Chung and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in key technologies have enabled the deployment of surveillance video cameras on various platforms, including stationary security cameras for infrastructure protection and public safety, UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) cameras for persistent surveillance of battlefield, and cameras on mobile agents, such as vehicles, robots, and soldiers for site survey. There is an urgent need to develop advanced computational methods and tools for automated video processing and scene understanding to support various applications. In this dissertation, we develop advanced video processing and computer vision methods for automated video processing and scene understanding. We concentrate our efforts on the following four tightly coupled tasks: (1) Aerial video registration and moving object detection. We develop new similarity measures for local motion estimation and a reliability model to analyze the reliability of local motion estimation. Based on these two components, we develop a fast and reliable global camera motion estimation and video registration for aerial video surveillance. (2) 3-D change detection from moving cameras. We study the problem of detecting changes from multi-source videos which are captured by different moving cameras with unknown parameters at different times. We attack this problem by exploring a hierarchy of view-invariant image patch descriptors. Based on multi-scale local binary pattern (LBP) description of super-pixels and middle-level image patch labeling, we construct a hierarchy of image patch descriptors and detect changes in the video scene using multi-scale information fusion. (3) Cross-view building matching and retrieval from aerial surveillance videos. Identifying and matching buildings between camera views is useful for scene understanding, battlefield surveillance, geo-location and geo-tagging of videos and photos. Our central idea is to construct a semantically rich sketch-based representation for buildings which is invariant under large scale and perspective changes. (4) Collaborative video compression for UAV surveillance network. We study the problem of a network of small UAVs with limited computational and communication resources to perform collaborative video surveillance of the target environment. Based on distributed video coding, we develop a collaborative video compression scheme for a UAV surveillance network. Our extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methods and tools for automated video processing and scene understanding are efficient and promising for surveillance applications.

Book Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Camera Integration

Download or read book Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Camera Integration written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have provided a bird's eye view of the battlefield with onboard video cameras feeding video images back to a ground control station. This paper reports on a project conducted by members of the Air Force Academy's UAV Research Group to purchase equipment and build an integrated video capture system for a small UAV. The project was funded by a grant from the Institute for Information Technology Applications (IITA). The UAV Research Group (UAVRG) at the Air Force Academy currently consists of over 25 members from 11 different academic departments. Over the past 3 years, they have gained experience in small UAVs such as the Desert Hawk UAV, designed by Lockheed Martin, and the Silver Fox UAV, developed by Advanced Ceramics Research (ACR). They have continued to expand their expertise with these UAVs and have developed a flying test bed that can be used to test UAV applications using real UAVs. The group is using aircraft in the test bed that are less expensive than the operational UAVs, but still based on the Piccolo autopilot module, the same autopilot used in the Silver Fox. Using the grant from IITA, the UAVRG has purchased equipment to capture video from an airborne UAV. The purpose of this project was to learn more about the limitations and benefits of video cameras, video capture hardware and software, and digital storage capacities. The paper serves as the final report for this project. It describes the equipment that the UAVRG purchased and the integration of this equipment into a video capture system. It also describes how the camera was physically mounted onto the UAV and the limitations the group encountered in accomplishing that. The paper also reports on experiments that the cadets in the Software Engineering class conducted to compare the different video compression and storage algorithms available for the system.

Book An Intelligent Portable Aerial Surveillance System Modeling and Image Stitching

Download or read book An Intelligent Portable Aerial Surveillance System Modeling and Image Stitching written by Ruixiang Du and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been widely used in modern warfare for surveillance, reconnaissance and even attack missions. They can provide valuable battlefield information and accomplish dangerous tasks with minimal risk of loss of lives and personal injuries. However, existing UAV systems are far from perfect to meet all possible situations. One of the most notable situations is the support for individual troops. Besides the incapability to always provide images in desired resolution, currently available systems are either too expensive for large-scale deployment or too heavy and complex for a single solder. Intelligent Portable Aerial Surveillance System (IPASS), sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), is aimed at developing a low-cost, light-weight unmanned aerial vehicle that can provide sufficient battlefield intelligence for individual troops. The main contributions of this thesis are two-fold (1) the development and verification of a model-based flight simulation for the aircraft, (2) comparison of image stitching techniques to provide a comprehensive aerial surveillance information from multiple vision. To assist with the design and control of the aircraft, dynamical models are established at different complexity levels. Simulations with these models are implemented in Matlab to study the dynamical characteristics of the aircraft. Aerial images acquired from the three onboard cameras are processed after getting the flying platform built. How a particular image is formed from a camera and the general pipeline of the feature-based image stitching method are first introduced in the thesis. To better satisfy the needs of this application, a homography-based stitching method is studied. This method can greatly reduce computation time with very little compromise in the quality of the panorama, which makes real-time video display of the surroundings on the ground station possible. By implementing both of the methods for image stitching using OpenCV, a quantitative comparison in the performance is accomplished.

In this chapter, a short literature brief will be discussed for moving object detection and long-term object tracking. Publicly available datasets in the literature are introduced. General approaches and success rates in the proposed methods are evaluated and approach to how deep learning-based solutions can be used together with classical methods are discussed. In addition to the methods in the literature for moving object detection problems, possible solution approaches for the challenges are also shared.

Book Incorporating Scene Mosaics as Visual Indexes Into UAV Video Imagery Databases

Download or read book Incorporating Scene Mosaics as Visual Indexes Into UAV Video Imagery Databases written by Timothy Page and published by . This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of large digital video archives has strengthened the need for more efficient ways of indexing video files an accessing the information contained in them. Reconnaissance platforms, such as the Predator UAV, are contributing thousands of hours of video footage that require analysis, storage, and retrieval. A process is proposed for converting a video stream into a series of mosaic and selected still images that provide complete coverage of the original video. The video mosaic images can be utilized as visual indexes into a video database. in addition, mosaic images contain information from an entire sequence of video frames to provide "at a glance" analysis capabilities. Actual reconnaissance video footage is converted to still-image representation using the proposed process and the results are discussed. Further, a web-based browse and search capability was developed to demonstrate the benefits of using the proposed process. Further, the Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system configuration is described with recommendations for placement of the video mosaic building process proposed in this research.

Book An Innovative Approach for Data Collection and Handling to Enable Advancements in Micro Air Vehicle Persistent Surveillance

Download or read book An Innovative Approach for Data Collection and Handling to Enable Advancements in Micro Air Vehicle Persistent Surveillance written by Ryan David Goodnight and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts has led to increased interest in further digitalization of the United States armed forces. Although unmanned systems have been a tool of the military for several decades, only recently have advances in the field of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology made it possible to develop systems capable of being transported by an individual soldier. These miniature unmanned systems, more commonly referred to as micro air vehicles (MAV), are envisioned by the Department of Defense as being an integral part of maintaining America's military superiority. As researchers continue to make advances in the miniaturization of flight hardware, a new problem with regard to MAV field operations is beginning to present itself. To date, little work has been done to determine an effective means of collecting, analyzing, and handling information that can satisfy the goal of using MAVs as tools for persistent surveillance. Current systems, which focus on the transmission of analog video streams, have been very successful on larger UAVs such as the RQ-11 Raven but have proven to be very demanding of the operator. By implementing a new and innovative data processing methodology, currently existing hardware can be adapted to effectively present critical information with minimal user input. Research currently being performed at Texas A & M University in the areas of attitude determination and image processing has yielded a new application of photographic projection. By replacing analog video with spatially aware high-resolution images, the present MAV handheld ground control stations (GCS) can be enhanced to reduce the number of functional manpower positions required during operation. Photographs captured by an MAV can be displayed above pre-existing satellite imagery to give an operator a lasting reference to the location of objects in his vicinity. This newly generated model also increases the functionality of micro air vehicles by allowing for target tracking and energy efficient perch and stare capabilities, both essential elements of persistent surveillance.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application of a camera array as a flexible, reconfigurable, inexpensive high-resolution panoramic motion-imagery sensor for low-altitude reconnaissance aircrafts is investigated. Assuming multiple-view noisy image position measurements of terrain features and known camera projection matrices by calibration, terrain feature localization and UAV positioning are analyzed by computer simulations, with/without supplementary gyro and GPS. How various system parameters impact the achievable precision of panoramic system in 3-D terrain feature localization and UAV motion estimation is determined for the A=0.5-2 KM) FLIGHT ALTITUDE RANGE. Enhancement of estimation accuracy from GPS and gyro is explored. Estimation error variance plots are given as a function of camera resolutions, viewing angles, flight altitudes, GPS and altitude measurement errors, number of views, etc. Selected results, from point correspondences in 4Kpixx4Kpix images and utilizing GPS readings with one-meter error variance at 0.5-2 KM) ALTITUDES, COMPRISE: Estimating 3-D coordinates of ground features tracked in 1-2 dozen images with A/10 baselines at sub-meter accuracy; Determining UAV pose with 0.1-0.3 DEG variance by matching 2-3 dozens of features in two views. The results provide valuable guidelines for the integration of camera-array images into one super resolution panorama, registering multiple panoramas to construct a single composite view, integration of visual survo with onboard sensors, map-based navigation and AUV positioning. Computed performance charts enable the design of optimal high-resolution imaging system based on the UAV size and capability constraints.
