National Geographic Traveler: Hawaii is the ideal companion for finding your bearings in the wide range of possibilities offered by the Hawaiian Islands, those jewels rising up in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean. The islands are the quintessential tropical paradise, but they're also full of surprises: delicious cuisine, the most active volcano in the country, fabulous sea cliffs, and refined boutiques. A unique atmosphere with Polynesian and Asian influences that are embedded in a genuinely American spirit, each of the six major islands has its own distinct character: Oahu, the cosmopolitan meeting place; Maui, young, lush, and sporty; Kauai, the garden isle; Hawaii, the big island or the orchid of the archipelago; Molokai, family-oriented and welcoming; and Lanai, a haven of peace and serenity. Making knowledgeable choices for your visit with the help of National Geographic experts will make your experience on the islands a memorable one. Discover the best Hawaii has to offer with: Driving tours―from Volcano National Park to the famed Road to Hana; A narrative that highlights the lifestyle, history, and modern culture of the islands; Off-the-beaten path excursions; The best spots for spotting turtles, dolphins, and whales off-shore; Top-notch diving and snorkeling destinations; And so much more. You have to visit the Hawaiian Islands to truly understand the profound meaning of Aloha, which is more than just a greeting. Discover how Aloha infiltrates every aspect of Hawaiian life with suggestions from National Geographic photographers and travel experts that take the guesswork out of planning your next trip.

Book Strange Tale of Panorama Island

Download or read book Strange Tale of Panorama Island written by Edogawa Ranpo and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edogawa Ranpo (1894-1965) was a great admirer of Edgar Allan Poe and like Poe drew on his penchant for the grotesque and the bizarre to explore the boundaries of conventional thought. Best known as the founder of the modern Japanese detective novel, Ranpo wrote for a youthful audience, and a taste for playacting and theatre animates his stories. His writing is often associated with the era of ero guro nansense (erotic grotesque nonsense), which accompanied the rise of mass culture and mass media in urban Japan in the 1920s. Characterized by an almost lurid fascination with simulacra and illusion, the era’s sensibility permeates Ranpo's first major work and one of his finest achievements, Strange Tale of Panorama Island (Panoramato kidan), published in 1926. Ranpo’s panorama island is filled with cleverly designed optical illusions: a staircase rises into the sky; white feathered “birds” speak in women’s voices and offer to serve as vehicles; clusters of naked men and women romp on slopes carpeted with rainbow-colored flowers. His fantastical utopia is filled with entrancing music and strange sweet odors, and nothing is ordinary, predictable, or boring. The novella reflected the new culture of mechanically produced simulated realities (movies, photographs, advertisements, stereoscopic and panoramic images) and focused on themes of the doppelganger and appropriated identities: its main character steals the identity of an acquaintance. The novella’s utopian vision, argues translator Elaine Gerbert, mirrors the expansionist dreams that fed Japan's colonization of the Asian continent, its ending an eerie harbinger of the collapse of those dreams. Today just as a new generation of technologies is transforming the way we think—and becoming ever more invasive and pervasive—Ranpo's work is attracting a new generation of readers. In the past few decades his writing has inspired films, anime, plays, and manga, and many translations of his stories, essays, and novels have appeared, but to date no English-language translation of Panoramato kidan has been available. This volume, which includes a critical introduction and notes, fills that gap and uncovers for English-language readers an important new dimension of an ever stimulating, provocative talent.

Book excerpt: A practical guide to the most scenic walks on the major Hawaiian islands of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Hawaii, Kauai and Oahu. Walks range from easy strolls of a few hours to multi-day excursions where blankets and sleeping backs are de rigeur. Waikiki, the Koolaus, Honolulu, Lahaina, the Seven Pools of Kipahulu, Kaanapali, Iao Valley State Park, Waimea Canyon, Kalalau Valley, the Na Pali Cliffs, Kalaupapa, Kaiholena Gulch, Waipop Valley, and Kilauea all have designated trails covered here. Descriptive text gives you a feel for the area, whether its downtown Honolulu or the lush green slopes of Iao Needle on Kauai. Each hike is graded for its difficulty from family to strenuous, although most are suitable for the entire family. A thoughtful interior design allows you to see the trail's rating, mileage and any permit requirements at a glance. This one's not for either the ultra-lazy pool potatoes or [those who] need step-by-step direction many pro-hiker guides provide. But if you'd like folksy-friendly insider tips to accessible Hawaiian adventures for the whole family, here's your guide.
