Book Inland Fisheries in Multiple purpose River Basin Planning and Development in Tropical Asian Countries

Download or read book Inland Fisheries in Multiple purpose River Basin Planning and Development in Tropical Asian Countries written by T. Petr and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1985 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical paper presents three case studies of inland fisheries in the context of a multiple-use of land and water resources in the humid tropics of Asia. Two of the three river basins are situated on islands, i.e. the Agno in the Philippines and the Mahaweli in Sri Lanka; one is on mainland Asia, i.e. the Nam Pong Basin in Thailand. Although the river basins have a number of features in common, such as, for example, their size, forest cover and population density, they differ in a number of other environmental aspects and changes induced by the development taking place in their basins. Inland fisheries in all three catchments is represented both by capture and culture components with reservoir fisheries gaining in importance. The studies have shown that while the major constraint to the riverine fisheries has been identified as being the high level of transported sediments originating from eroding lands and mine waste discharge (the Agno Basin), in the reservoirs of Nam Pong and Mahaweli basins it has been the high fishing pressure, in one case non-regulated (Nam Pong), which has caused deterioration of fish stocks. Another constraint in force until recently was of a social (religious) character (Mahaweli Basin). The three studies have shown that in most situations inland fisheries can successfully develop under conditions of the multiple use of the resource.

Download or read book The Green Tiger written by Barbara Goldoftas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Philippines was once famous for the beauty of its reef-ringed islands, white beaches, and lush forests. In less than a half-century, its forests were felled, its oceans over-fished, and its coral reefs destroyed. The rapid harvest of once-abundant resources has brought droughts, deadly flash floods, and the collapse of vital fisheries. As the rural economy weakened and millions migrated to cities, they overwhelmed the urban infrastructure. Today, the Philippines stands as an example of the profound and sweeping consequences of ecological decline. In The Green Tiger, Barbara Goldoftas documents this tragic trajectory. But hers is not a story of hopelessness and inevitable defeat. In lyrical, unflinching prose, she traces the struggle for conservation in the Philippines, from isolated villages to large cities, and in the process illustrates the surprising ways in which conservation and economic growth can effectively co-exist."--Publisher's website.

Book The Soils of the Philippines

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rodelio B. Carating
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business
  • Release : 2014-04-23
  • ISBN : 9401786828
  • Pages : 363 pages

Download or read book The Soils of the Philippines written by Rodelio B. Carating and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first soil survey in the Philippines was done by Mr. Clarence Dorsey, an American soil scientist in the province of Batangas in 1903. The Soils of the Philippines, however, is the first comprehensive summary of more than a century of soil-survey work in this country. It integrates the soil concepts of the reconnaissance soil-survey results, which commenced as early as 1934 and continued until the mid 1960s, with the semi-detailed soil surveys that continue to this day. The result is the first-ever genetic key for classifying Philippine soils at soil series level; thus, making it possible for any newcomers to the soil survey field to confidently produce their own soil map, at a more detailed map scale, to suit the project requirements. This book brings together discussions on soils and soil mapping units and up-to-date international techniques and technologies. It makes soils relevant to current political realities and national issues. As soil survey moves from a reductionist agricultural-development planning tool to a more holistic and integrated approach, to enable us to understand our dynamic and complex environment, The Soils of the Philippines will be the only source of authoritative and updated data on soil resources for macro-level resource management planning for decades to come. With a vanishing breed of experienced soil surveyors, not only in the Philippines but also worldwide, it may remain the only book on Philippine soils for the next hundred years or more. Since soils follow a geological and not a human time frame, the contents of this volume will stay relevant for soil surveyors even in a fast changing world. As the country leaps from an agricultural economy towards modernization and a more diversified economic base, some of the soil series in the Philippines, for example the Guadalupe series underlying the skyscrapers of Makati City, are becoming extinct as a result of urban development. Therefore, this book serves as the repository for the soils that we possess, the soils that have been lost through decades of urbanization while, at the same time, it creates a soil classification system for the soils we are yet to discover.
