This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What defines a people? Is it their art or history? For a group of scholars closely involved with education and cultural transformation in Malaysia, the definition comes in unique and classically beautiful forms, like the Ukkil on the Barung of the Suluk people in Sabah. The main author, Nelson Dino, with the help of the co-authors, Baharudin Arus, Lokman Abd Samad and Jul-Amin Ampang had written a historically and culturally important book on the Suluk and their beloved Ukkil or art of carving. They focused on the Ukkil found on the Barung, arguably one of the best swords ever to come out of Southeast Asia. They discussed the historical, cultural, artistic, and social importance of the Barung and how Ukkil found on it can become an important part of the vehicle that can take Sabah into a more enlightened and harmonious place.

This book was released on 2024 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This is an open access book. Computation should be a good blend of theory and practice. Researchers in the field should create algorithms to address real world problems putting equal weight to analysis and implementation. Experimentation and simulation can be viewed as yielding to refined theories or improved applications. WCTP 2023 is the twelfth workshop organized by the Tokyo Institute of Technology, The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research-Osaka University, Chitose Institute of Science and Technology, University of the Philippines-Diliman and De La Salle University-Manila that is devoted to theoretical and practical approaches to computation. It aims to present the latest developments by theoreticians and practitioners in academe and industry working to address computational problems that can directly impact the way we live in society. WCTP 2023 will feature work-in-progress presentations of prominent researchers selected by members of its Program Committee who come from highly distinguished institutions in Japan and the Philippines. The presentation at the workshop will certainly provide high quality comments and discussion that future research can benefit from. WCTP 2023 is supported by Chitose Institute of Science and Technology, and Photonics World Consortium

Download or read book Sounding the Dance Moving the Music written by Mohd Anis Md Nor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing arts in most parts of Maritime Southeast Asia are seen as an entity, where music and dance, sound and movement, acoustic and tactile elements intermingle and complement each other. Although this fact is widely known and referenced, most scholarly works in the performing arts so far have either focused on "music" or "dance" rather than treating the two in combination. The authors in this book look at both aspects in performance, moreover, they focus explicitly on the interrelation between the two, on both descriptive-analytical and metaphorical levels. The book includes diverse examples of regional performing art genres from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. All case studies are composed from the perspective of the relatively new approach and field of ethno-choreomusicology. This particular compilation gives an exemplary overview of various phenomena in movement-sound relations, and offers for the first time a thorough study of the phenomenon that is considered essential for the performing arts in Maritime Southeast Asia - the inseparability of movement and sound.

Download or read book Places for Happiness written by William Peterson and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Places for Happiness explores two of the most important performance-based activities in the Philippines: the processions and Passion Plays associated with Easter and the mass-dance phenomenon known as “street dancing.” The scale of these handcrafted performances in terms of duration, time commitment, and productive labor marks the Philippines as one of the world’s most significant and undervalued performance-centered cultures. Drawing on a decade of fieldwork, William Peterson examines how people come together in the streets or on temporary stages, celebrating a shared sense of community and creating places for happiness. The first half of the book focuses on localized and often highly idiosyncratic versions of the Passion of Christ. Peterson considers not only what people do in these events, but what it feels like to participate. The book’s second half provides a window into the many expressions of “street dancing.” Street dancing is inflected by localized indigenous and folk dance traditions that are reinforced at school and practiced in conjunction with religious civic festivals. Peterson identifies key frames that shape and contain the individual in the Philippines, while tracking how the local expands its expressive home by engaging in a dialogue with regional, national, and diasporic Filipino imaginaries. Ultimately Places for Happiness explores how community-based performance responds to and fulfills basic human needs. Many Filipinos rely on family members and immediate neighbors for support and sustenance, and community-based performance assumes a unique and leading role in defining, reinforcing, and celebrating shared belief systems. By bringing forth the internal, phenomenological, and embodied aspects of a range of community-based practices contributing to human happiness, the book offers a cultural framework that interweaves the individual experience with that of the collective, plotting out what resides inside the body through the coordinates of culture.
