Download or read book Making Images Move written by Gregory Zinman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Images Move reveals a new history of cinema by uncovering its connections to other media and art forms. In this richly illustrated volume, Gregory Zinman explores how moving-image artists who worked in experimental film pushed the medium toward abstraction through a number of unconventional filmmaking practices, including painting and scratching directly on the film strip; deteriorating film with water, dirt, and bleach; and applying materials such as paper and glue. This book provides a comprehensive history of this tradition of “handmade cinema” from the early twentieth century to the present, opening up new conversations about the production, meaning, and significance of the moving image. From painted film to kinetic art, and from psychedelic light shows to video synthesis, Gregory Zinman recovers the range of forms, tools, and intentions that make up cinema’s shadow history, deepening awareness of the intersection of art and media in the twentieth century, and anticipating what is to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Simon R. Green’s Secret Histories fantasy adventure series featuring supernatural super-agent Eddie Drood continues. Eddie Drood here...well, not quite. Being a member of a secret-yet-legendary family of evil-battlers who have been shielding people from the darkest entities on Earth for ages can take its toll. So lately, I’ve been relaxing. Regrouping. Looking at things from a place of peace and quiet. After all, being dead does have its perks. Lucky for me my lovely witch Molly Metcalfe is able to pull me back to the mortal plane just in time for another disaster to befall the Drood clan and the world in general. It appears there is a Satanist conspiracy in the making. And I don’t mean your typical wear-black-eyeliner, mope-around-the-high-school, rebelling-against-daddy devil devotees. These Satanists are incredibly for real, extremely devoted to their dark lord, and dead serious about breaking down the gates of Hell to unleash...well, Hell. And the key to this is something called the “Great Sacrifice,” a horrific occurrence the likes of which humanity has never conceived—and will never survive. That is, unless an unlikely guardian angel leaps into the fray. Dammit...where did I put my wings and halo...?

Download or read book The Names of God written by Herbert Chanan Brichto and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-09 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sequel to the author's iconoclastic Toward a Grammar of Biblical Poetics (Oxford, 1992), in which Brichto argues for the aesthetic wholeness of the Hebrew Bible, and the consistency of Scripture's preachment on God, nature, and the human condition--in direct opposition to current source criticism, which maintains that inconsistencies within the text support an atomistic reading of multiple authors. In The Names of God, Brichto brings us his "poetic" reading of Scripture to the Book of Genesis. Using contemporary methods and insights of literary criticism, he examines one of the great inconsistencies within Genesis that have led to the supposition of multiple authors--the assortment of terms or names for the Deity, among them Yahweh and Elohim--and attempts to show the appropriateness of certain of these names to the stories in which they appear. He also looks at a variety of other data within Genesis such as genealogies, eponyms, and chronologies, and shows that their poetical function--their variety, ingenuity, and imaginative whimsy--is vital to the structure of the text as a whole. In finding a unity in this diversity of materials, Brichto makes a strong case for the text as the artistic achievement of a single author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reflects my time aboard the Rotterdam, a Holland America cruise ship, for a 91-day journey. This extraordinary journey consistted of visits to 24 countries, with 37 different ports of call. To date, this was the longest cruising voyage I had undertaken, from September 2015 to March 2020, only stopping because of the Covid-19 pandemic.share these i The first volume begins the journey when the Rotterdam left the from city of Rotterdam, Holland, then journeying southward through the Bay of Biscay, to Portugal, and then through the Suez Canal for the Middle East and the Far East. This was an extraordinary journey, through regions, countries, and people as diverse as the world. The volume reflects the history and culture of these people, as we sailed ever deeper through the places of incredible beauty, with the necessity of changing money and keeping track of its local value so as to experience local flavors and its sights. Doing justice to such a voyage is both exhilarating but also daunting. Every location we visited has its story, its own narrative and importance. We sailed across waters that is the stuff of ancient, medieval and modern legend. And it remains a distinct privilege to share this journey with the world.
