Book The Mutiny on the Bounty Pandora s Box

Download or read book The Mutiny on the Bounty Pandora s Box written by David G Williams and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-12-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new version of the whole story of the Bounty, it covers everything, from its disastrous crew selection, the Mutiny, incitement of Polynesian wars, trials, executions, pardons, kidnaps, rapes, enslavement to the brutal island murders. Make no mistake; it may have been the beginning of the Romantic Age but there was nothing romantic about the mutiny on the Bounty, why did Fletcher Christian choose oblivion over common sense on that hot sunny morning so long ago? Was it because far from freeing the crew from oppression he was actually mentally unstable? Where exactly was Peter Heywood and why did half the crew choose certain death in an open boat rather than sail away with the mutineers? Just some of the questions answered in this book, for the first time the whole story, the complete story, including the Pandora's hunt for the mutineers and the Admiralty's revenge, and the true price of Peter Heywood's freedom.

Book The Economics of Friendship

Download or read book The Economics of Friendship written by Tazuko van Berkel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Economics of Friendship, Tazuko Angela van Berkel offers an account of the notion of reciprocity in 5th- and 4th-century Greek incepting social theory. The preoccupation with the norms of philia and charis, conspicuous in sources from the Classical Period, is a symptom of changes in the shape of ancient economic activities: the ubiquitous norm that one should reciprocate benefit with benefit becomes a source of conceptual confusion in the Classical Period, where other forms of exchange become conceptually available. This confusion and tension between different models of mutuality, is productive: it is the impetus for folk theory in comedy, tragedy and oratory, as well as philosophical reflection (Xenophon, Plato, Aristotle) on what it is that binds people together.

Book Frankenstein and Its Classics

Download or read book Frankenstein and Its Classics written by Jesse Weiner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frankenstein and Its Classics is the first collection of scholarship dedicated to how Frankenstein and works inspired by it draw on ancient Greek and Roman literature, history, philosophy, and myth. Presenting twelve new essays intended for students, scholars, and other readers of Mary Shelley's novel, the volume explores classical receptions in some of Frankenstein's most important scenes, sources, and adaptations. Not limited to literature, the chapters discuss a wide range of modern materials-including recent films like Alex Garland's Ex Machina and comics like Matt Fraction's and Christian Ward's Ody-C-in relation to ancient works including Hesiod's Theogony, Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound, Ovid's Metamorphoses, and Apuleius's The Golden Ass. All together, these studies show how Frankenstein, a foundational work of science fiction, brings ancient thought to bear on some of today's most pressing issues, from bioengineering and the creation of artificial intelligence to the struggles of marginalized communities and political revolution. This addition to the comparative study of classics and science fiction reveals deep similarities between ancient and modern ways of imagining the world-and emphasizes the prescience and ongoing importance of Mary Shelley's immortal novel. As Frankenstein turns 200, its complex engagement with classical traditions is more significant than ever.

Book The Resurrection of the Body

Download or read book The Resurrection of the Body written by David Greenham and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length study of Norman O. Brown, The Resurrection of the Body brings an order beyond "Western Culture" to the subjects that make up Brown's field of engagement, subjects as diverse as Classical Studies, Philosophy, Philology, Psychoanalysis, Theology, Literature, History, and Marxism. For Brown, each of these subjects is in a very real sense an emanation of the body; that is, Western Culture is the body's attempt to resurrect itself. Examining Brown's works from Hermes the Thief to Closing Time, David Greenham illuminates Brown's fascinating signature style of collage, quotation, and comment. This book also seeks to redress the balance between Brown and his more celebrated contemporary Herbert Marcuse. The Resurrection of the Body is essential reading for any Norman O. Brown scholar.

Book The American Villain

Download or read book The American Villain written by Richard A. Hall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Villain: Encyclopedia of Bad Guys in Comics, Film, and Television seeks to provide one go-to reference for the study of the most popular and iconic villains in American popular culture. Since the 1980s, pop culture has focused on what makes a villain a villain. The Joker, Darth Vader, and Hannibal Lecter have all been placed under the microscope to get to the origins of their villainy. Additionally, such bad guys as Angelus from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows have emphasized the desire for redemption—in even the darkest of villains. Various incarnations of Lucifer/Satan have even gone so far as to explore the very foundations of what we consider "evil." The American Villain: Encyclopedia of Bad Guys in Comics, Film, and Television seeks to collect all of those stories into one comprehensive volume. The volume opens with essays about villains in popular culture, followed by 100 A–Z entries on the most notorious bad guys in film, comics, and more. Sidebars highlight ancillary points of interest, such as authors, creators, and tropes that illuminate the motives of various villains. A glossary of key terms and a bibliography provide students with resources to continue their study of what makes the "baddest" among us so bad.

Book Faith and the Zombie

Download or read book Faith and the Zombie written by Simon Bacon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Themes of faith and religion have been threaded through popular representations of the zombie so often that they now seem inextricably linked. Whether as mindless servants to a Vodou Bokor or as evidence of the impending apocalypse, the ravenous undead have long captured something of society's relationships with spirituality, religion and belief. By the start of the 21st century, religious beliefs are as varied as the many manifestations of the zombie itself, and both themes intersect with various ideological, environmental and even post-human concerns. This book surveys the various modern religious associations in zombie media. Some characters believe that the undead are part of God's plan, others theorize that the environment might be saving itself or that zombies might be predicting life and hybridity beyond human existence. Timely and important, this work is a meditation on how faith might not just be a forerunner to the apocalypse, but the catalyst to new kinds of life beyond it.

Lyly's energy and wit inspired his contemporaries to follow new directions in prose fiction and stage comedy, and his writings still illuminate sixteenth-century culture for the modern reader. The twenty-four essays in this selection include some older classics, but most date from 1990 onwards and reflect current critical concerns with politics and sexuality, class and audience. Both Euphues books and the eight plays receive some detailed attention. The essays are grouped into four sections: Lessons in Wit, Courting the Queen, Playing with Desire, and Performing Lyly. A biographical summary and critical survey are provided in the introduction; other voices and insights are alluded to in the notes and listed in the wide-ranging bibliography.

Book Anatomy of a Robot

Download or read book Anatomy of a Robot written by Despina Kakoudaki and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we find artificial people fascinating? Drawing from a rich fictional and cinematic tradition, Anatomy of a Robot explores the political and textual implications of our perennial projections of humanity onto figures such as robots, androids, cyborgs, and automata. In an engaging, sophisticated, and accessible presentation, Despina Kakoudaki argues that, in their narrative and cultural deployment, artificial people demarcate what it means to be human. They perform this function by offering us a non-human version of ourselves as a site of investigation. Artificial people teach us that being human, being a person or a self, is a constant process and often a matter of legal, philosophical, and political struggle. By analyzing a wide range of literary texts and films (including episodes from Twilight Zone, the fiction of Philip K. Dick, Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Never Let Me Go, Metropolis, The Golem, Frankenstein, The Terminator, Iron Man, Blade Runner, and I, Robot), and going back to alchemy and to Aristotle’s Physics and De Anima, she tracks four foundational narrative elements in this centuries-old discourse— the fantasy of the artificial birth, the fantasy of the mechanical body, the tendency to represent artificial people as slaves, and the interpretation of artificiality as an existential trope. What unifies these investigations is the return of all four elements to the question of what constitutes the human. This focused approach to the topic of the artificial, constructed, or mechanical person allows us to reconsider the creation of artificial life. By focusing on their historical provenance and textual versatility, Kakoudaki elucidates artificial people’s main cultural function, which is the political and existential negotiation of what it means to be a person.
