Book excerpt: There Were Nine of Them: men with the names Oppenheimer, Teller, Fermi, Bohr, Lawrence, Bethe, Rabi, Szilard, and Compton-brilliant men who believed in science and who saw before anyone else did the awesome workings of an invisible world. They came from many places, some fleeing Nazism in Europe, others quietly slipping out of university teaching jobs, all gathering in secret wartime laboratories to create the world's first atomic bomb. At one such place hidden away in the mountains of northern New Mexico-Los Alamos-they would crack the secret of the nuclear chain reaction and construct a device that incinerated a city and melted its victims so thoroughly that the only thing left was their scorched outlines on the sidewalks. During the war, few of the atomic scientists questioned the wisdom of their desperate endeavor. But afterward, they were forced to deal with the sobering legacy of their creation. Some were haunted by the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and would become anti-nuclear weapons activists; others would go on to build bigger and even deadlier bombs. Some would remain friends; others would become bitter rivals and enemies. In explaining their lives and their struggles, Brian VanDeMark superbly illuminates the ways in which these brilliant and sensitive men came to terms with their horrific creation. The result is spectacular history and a moral investigation of the highest order.

  • Author : Andrew J Bottomley
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2020-06-01
  • ISBN : 0472126776
  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book Sound Streams written by Andrew J Bottomley and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In talking about contemporary media, we often use a language of newness, applying words like “revolution” and “disruption.” Yet, the emergence of new sound media technologies and content—from the earliest internet radio broadcasts to the development of algorithmic music services and the origins of podcasting—are not a disruption, but a continuation of the century-long history of radio. Today’s most innovative media makers are reintroducing forms of audio storytelling from radio’s past. Sound Streams is the first book to historicize radio-internet convergence from the early ’90s through the present, demonstrating how so-called new media represent an evolutionary shift that is nevertheless historically consistent with earlier modes of broadcasting. Various iterations of internet radio, from streaming audio to podcasting, are all new radio practices rather than each being a separate new medium: radio is any sound media that is purposefully crafted to be heard by an audience. Rather than a particular set of technologies or textual conventions, web-based broadcasting combines unique practices and features and ideas from radio history. In addition, there exists a distinctive conversationality and reflexivity to radio talk, including a propensity for personal stories and emotional disclosure, that suits networked digital media culture. What media convergence has done is extend and intensify radio’s logics of connectivity and sharing; sonically mediated personal expression intended for public consideration abounds in online media networks. Sound Streams marks a significant contribution to digital media and internet studies. Its mix of cultural history, industry research, and genre and formal analysis, especially of contemporary audio storytelling, will appeal to media scholars, radio and podcast practitioners, audio journalism students, and dedicated podcast fans.

Book Pandoras Return

  • Author : Ingram Foster
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2016-10-28
  • ISBN : 152459413X
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Pandoras Return written by Ingram Foster and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume in this two-part collection was inspired by anguish and turmoil that I was surrounded with several years ago. This volume is inspired by characters who might have caused these feelings and by finding escape from the negativity that is derived from situations that are less favorable. Over the time lapse between lyrical bursts, there have been many situations that cannot be poetized and others that may fill in the gaps between what people may see and what others may do. I think the best way to sum up this book is as a war on the imagination.

Book The Elder Brothers and the Keeper of Time

This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Cali a Time Keeper or is she remembering events that have already happened before time was changed? Ten-year-old Cali must discover who Jamie and Nicky Elder are, and why it’s so important to reach the boys before the evilest warlock of all, Ostrogoth, can find the brothers and kill them! Cali lives in Padstow Green, Cornwall, a hidden community of Specials, people with magical powers. She realizes that time has been changed. Before she can fix it, the warlocks attack, so Cali and the other villagers must flee. But all is not lost. While in hiding, Cali meets Jamie and Nicky. She befriends the boys, teaches them about magic, and their adventures begin. Firstly, Nicky nearly kills Jamie with a spell. Then they journey to the now warlock-infested Padstow Green to find Goldhawk Springs, where they can enhance their magical talents. However, time is running out. Ostrogoth is openly attacking Normals, non-magical people, and barricades are going up all over England. Anyone stopped without identification is detained. After a warlock attacks the boys in a supposedly safe house, Cali, the boys, and their parents go on the run. Barely avoiding the relentless warlocks and the Normals soldiers alike, they travel from one end of England to the other, finally finding a place they can hide until the boys develop the skills necessary to challenge Ostrogoth, and either kill or be killed.\

Book The Cowkeeper s Wish

Download or read book The Cowkeeper s Wish written by Tracy Kasaboski and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1840s, a young cowkeeper and his wife arrive in London, England, having walked from coastal Wales with their cattle. They hope to escape poverty, but instead they plunge deeper into it, and the family, ensconced in one of London’s “black holes,” remains mired there for generations. The Cowkeeper’s Wish follows the couple’s descendants in and out of slum housing, bleak workhouses and insane asylums, through tragic deaths, marital strife and war. Nearly a hundred years later, their great-granddaughter finds herself in an altogether different London, in southern Ontario. In The Cowkeeper’s Wish, Kristen den Hartog and Tracy Kasaboski trace their ancestors’ path to Canada, using a single family’s saga to give meaningful context to a fascinating period in history—Victorian and then Edwardian England, the First World War and the Depression. Beginning with little more than enthusiasm, a collection of yellowed photographs and a family tree, the sisters scoured archives and old newspapers, tracked down streets, pubs and factories that no longer exist, and searched out secrets buried in crumbling ledgers, building on the fragments that remained of family tales. While this family story is distinct, it is also typical, and so all the more worth telling. As a working-class chronicle stitched into history, The Cowkeeper’s Wish offers a vibrant, absorbing look at the past that will captivate genealogy enthusiasts and readers of history alike.

Book Doing Honest Work in College Third Edition

Download or read book Doing Honest Work in College Third Edition written by Charles Lipson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Honest Work in College stands on three principles: do the work you say you do, give others credit, and present your research fairly. These are straightforward concepts, but the abundance of questionable online sources and temptation of a quick copy-paste can cause confusion as to what’s considered citing and what’s considered cheating. This guide starts out by clearly defining plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty and then gives students the tools they need to avoid those pitfalls. This edition addresses the acceptable use of mobile devices on tests, the proper approach to sources such as podcasts or social media posts, and the limitations of citation management software.

As a Keeper, Alessande understands the risks of investigating, but she can't shake the nagging feeling that the killings are tied to a friend's recent murder, and she can't turn her back. With the help of Mark Valiente, a dangerously sexy vampire cop, Alessande narrowly escapes becoming a sacrifice herself.
