Book excerpt: Though, childhood of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was spent in dire circumstances, yet he was masked as a talented student when Indian struggle for independence was engulfed by two nation theory. 1942 he started his public life via Rashtriya Swayam Sewaksangh. He was an astute organiser, man of letters, a journalist and an orator. He supplemented his work of R.S.S. through his skills. He joined politics when Bharatiya Jana Sangh was established as a political party under the presidentship of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He started Kashmir movement, independence of Goa movement and movement against transferring of Berubari and thus kept these issues alive in Indian politics to strengthen unity and integrity of India. He devoted whole of his life for the integration of India. India needed a strong opposition party and Bharatiya Jana Sangh emerged as a powerful opposition. He made extensive preparation for making this opposition party as an alternative to the ruling party. An alternative was needed not only of the old system but of the old ideologies too. He gave a call for ‘Integral Humanism’, ‘Cultural Nationalism’ and ‘Indianisation’. He remained General Secretary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1951 to 1967 and was made president of the party in 1968, shortly before his gruesome murder. The political party he nurtured became the political alternative in the form of Bharatiya Janata Party.

Although the BJP was defeated nationally in 2004, it continues to govern large Indian states, and the movement it represents remains a major force in the world's largest democracy. This book presents the thought of the founding fathers and key intellectual leaders of Hindu nationalism from the time of the British Raj, through the independence period, to the present. Spanning more than 130 years of Indian history and including the writings of both famous and unknown ideologues, this reader reveals how the "Hindutuva" movement approaches key issues of Indian politics. Covering such important topics as secularism, religious conversion, relations with Muslims, education, and Hindu identity in the growing diaspora, this reader will be indispensable for anyone wishing to understand contemporary Indian politics, society, culture, or history.

Book Biography Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya

Download or read book Biography Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya written by Krishna Kumar Singh and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deendayal Upadhyaya was a man of soaring idealism and had a tremendous capacity for organization. He started a monthly magazine "Rashtra Dharma", a weekly 'Panchajanya', and a daily 'Swadesh'. In 1951, when Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bhartiya Jana Sangh, Deendayal became the first General Secretary of its U.P. branch. He was also chosen as All India General Secretary. The acumen and meticulousness shown by Deendayal deeply impressed Dr. Mukherjee and elicited his famous remarks "If I had two Deendayal, I could transform the political face of India". After Dr. Mookerjee's death in 1953, the entire burden of nurturing the orphaned organization and building it up as a nation-wide movement fell on the young shoulders of Deendayal. For 15 long years he remained the party's General Secretary and built it up, brick by brick. He raised a band of dedicated workers imbued with idealism and provided the entire ideological framework of the party. The final triumph of his statesmanship and vision was the historic session of the Party in 1967. Deendayal was a deep and original thinker. His philosophy of Integral Humanism, which is a synthesis of the material and the spiritual, the individual and the collective, bears eloquent testimony to this. In the field of politics and economics, he was pragmatic and down to earth. He visualized for India a decentralized polity and self-reliant economy with the village as the base. He welcomed modern technology but wanted it to be adapted to suit Indian requirements. Deendayal believed in a constructive approach. He exhorted his followers to co-operate with the Government when it was right and fearlessly oppose when it erred. He placed the nation's interests above everything else. Deendayal Upadhyaya was found dead in the early hours of February 1, 1968, while traveling in a train. The rousing call he gave to the thousands of delegates in the Calicut session, still rings in their ears "We are pledged to the service not of any particular community or section but of the entire nation. Every countryman is blood of our blood and flesh of our flesh. We shall not rest till we are able to give to everyone a sense of pride that they are children of Bharatmata. We shall make Mother India sujala, suphala (overflowing with water and laden with fruits) in the real sense of these words. As Dashapraharana Dharini Durga (Goddess Durga with her ten weapons) she would be able to vanquish evil; as Lakshmi she would be able to disburse prosperity all over and as Saraswati she would dispel the gloom of ignorance and spread the radiance of knowledge all around her. With faith in ultimate victory, let us dedicate ourselves to this task". Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (25 September 1916 - 11 February 1968) was an RSS thinker and co-founder of the political party Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of Bharatiya Janata Party. He became president of the Jana Sangh in December 1967. His tenure did not play any bigger role. He contested the Lok Sabha election and lost. He was killed in a train theft incident and was found dead on February 11, 1968 on a railway track near Mughalsarai station.Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was born on Monday September 25, 1916, (Ashwin Krishna Trayodashi, Samvat 1973) in the sacred region of Brij in the village of Nagla Chandraban in Mathura District. His full name was Deendayal Upadhyaya, but he was called Deena by the family. His father, Shri Bhagwati Prasad, was Assistant Station Master at Jalesar. His great-grandfather, Pandit Hariram Upadhyaya was a well-known astrologer. An astrologer who studied his horoscope predicted that the boy would become a great scholar and thinker, a selfless worker, and a leading politician - but that he would not marry. After his birth, two years later, his mother Shrimati Rampyari gave birth to her second son, Shivdayal. He lost his father Shri Bhagwati Prasad when he was less than three years old and his mother before he was eight.
