In World War I, people of African descent fought for both sides, earning distinction on the battlefields of France as well as in the jungles and deserts of Africa. The "Black Awakening," a period from 1919 through 1929, marked the dawning of global awareness of the contributions of African people to the culture of the world. The book is arranged by year and events of each year are grouped by region. It also has two special biographical divisions for W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey.

Book Pan African Chronology I

Download or read book Pan African Chronology I written by Everett Jenkins, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1400s were a pivotal time in the history of Africans. The Songhai Empire rose to prominence and new city-states arose in Hausaland, Yorubaland and Benin. One of the most significant developments, however, was European and Asian exploration of the continent and the rapid expansion of the slave trade. By the end of the century, African slaves could be found from India to the Indies, and the foundation was laid for a peculiar institution that would last for over 400 years. From the time of the first European expeditions to Africa to the end of slavery in the United States, this work chronicles the most significant events in African, Pan-African and African American history. Many of the entries (e.g., Columbus' "discovery" of America and the death of Toussaint L'Ouverture) are supplemented by brief historical accounts that set the event in context. There are extensive see references to related happenings.

Book Pan African Chronology II

Download or read book Pan African Chronology II written by Everett Jenkins, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This continuation volume of the Pan-African Chronology set covers the most significant events in the African diaspora from the end of the American Civil War through the pre-World War I years. This was a time of great change for black Americans--Reconstruction, the founding of the NAACP, the formation of the separate but equal doctrine, and the migration of blacks from the rural South to Northern cities. The eradication of slavery as a legalized institution was finally realized in the Americas, while the struggle to end it in Asia was also taking place. European colonialism in Africa was accelerated, ironically coinciding with humanitarian efforts to end the slave trade on the African continent. These events and many others are covered here.

Book Swiss Monetary History since the Early 19th Century

Download or read book Swiss Monetary History since the Early 19th Century written by Ernst Baltensperger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the remarkable path which led to the Swiss Franc becoming the strong international currency that it is today. Ernst Baltensperger and Peter Kugler use Swiss monetary history to provide valuable insights into a number of issues concerning the organization and development of monetary institutions and currency that shaped the structure of financial markets and affected the economic course of a country in important ways. They investigate a number of topics, including the functioning of a world without a central bank, the role of competition and monopoly in money and banking, the functioning of monetary unions, monetary policy of small open economies under fixed and flexible exchange rates, the stability of money demand and supply under different monetary regimes, and the monetary and macroeconomic effects of Swiss Banking and Finance. Swiss Monetary History since the Early 19th Century illustrates the value of monetary history for understanding financial markets and macroeconomics today.

Book The Souls of Black Folk

Download or read book The Souls of Black Folk written by Association for the Study of African-American Life and History and published by Africa Research and Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this curriculum guide, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History continues its emphasis on Du Bois' prophetic statement first enunciated at the Pan-African Conference of 1900 that "the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line," and moreover the "double-consciousness" or "two-ness" confronting African Americans-"two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring details in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder." In addition to engaging the issues raised in Du Bois' prophetic statement, the editors have chosen to highlight the following themes in his seminal work: The Souls of Black Folk Revisited Black History and Historians The Tuskegee Machine and the Politics of Accommodation Talented Tenth Race Relations Pan-Africanism The Sacred Arts These themes are reflective of the evolving scholarship that W.E.B Du Bois expressed in The Souls of Black Folk and throughout his prolific career. While it is patently impossible to design a curriculum guide around the fifty or more state history standards, the editors have employed the Mid-continent Region Education Laboratory's Content Knowledge: A Compendium of Standards and Benchmarks for K-12 Education as well as consulting the state standards in California, Maryland, Illinois, and Virginia in creating this useful guide.
