Book Hard pressed in the Heartland

Download or read book Hard pressed in the Heartland written by Peter J. Rachleff and published by South End Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hard-Pressed in the Heartland tells the heartbreaking but empowering story of a spirited local union trying to resist management's drive for concessions--while fending off a conservative national union leadership unwilling to support its own members. Going beyond academic history, it offers useful perspectives for rebuilding a democratic, militant, community-based unionism that can succeed where today's bureaucratic unionism cannot.

Download or read book Minnesota History written by Theodore Christian Blegen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1960 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minnesota History was first published in 1960. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Anyone interested in Minnesota history, whether as a teacher, as a student, or as a general reader, will find this an invaluable guide to reading and study. The book contains an outline of the state's history, questions and suggestions for the student, and lists of reading material for each of the 42 topical sections into which the outline is divided. The outline covers the entire history of the state from the time of the Indians, before the French and British explorations, to the present. The reading references include accounts written from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries. The aim in preparing the reading lists was to include any article or book bearing upon the Minnesota story which met the qualifications of good historical writing and fair accessibility. Materials of particular interest or importance to the topic under consideration are so designated, and there are liberal annotations to help the reader in his choice of readings. References which are particularly appropriate for young readers are also specially designated. A number of maps are provided for additional guidance. This is a complete revision of a book long out of print, Minnesota History: A Study Outline by Theodore C. Blegen.

Book Organizing Matters

Download or read book Organizing Matters written by Guy Mundlak and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizing Matters demonstrates the interplay between two distinct logics of labour’s collective action: on the one hand, workers coming together, usually at their place of work, entrusting the union to represent their interests and, on the other hand, social bargaining in which the trade union constructs labour’s interests from the top down. The book investigates the tensions and potential complementarities between the two logics through the combination of a strong theoretical framework and an extensive qualitative case study of trade union organizing and recruitment in four countries – Austria, Germany, Israel and the Netherlands. These countries still utilize social-wide bargaining but find it necessary to draw and develop strategies transposed from Anglo-American countries in response to continuously declining membership.

Book Making Minnesota Liberal

Download or read book Making Minnesota Liberal written by Jennifer Alice Delton and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Making Minnesota Liberal, Jennifer A. Delton delves into the roots of Minnesota politics and traces the change from the regional, third-party, class-oriented politics of the Farmer-Labor party to the national, two-party, pluralistic liberalism of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party (DFL). While others have examined how anticommunism and the Cold War shaped this transformation, Delton takes a new approach, showing the key roles played by antiracism and the civil rights movement. In telling this story, Delton contributes to our understanding not only of Minnesotas political history but also of.

Book Packinghouse Daughter

Download or read book Packinghouse Daughter written by Cheri Register and published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violence that erupted when the company "replaced" its union workers with strikebreakers tested family loyalty and community stability, and attracted national attention when the governor of Minnesota called in the National Guard, declared martial law, and closed the plant. Register skillfully interweaves her own memories, historical research, and first-person interviews of participants on both sides of the strike into a narrative that is thoughtful and impassioned about the value of blue-collar work and the dignity of those who do it. Packinghouse Daughter also testifies to the hold that childhood experience has on personal values and notions of social class, despite the upward mobility that is the great promise of American democracy.
