Book A Handbook of Churches and Councils

Download or read book A Handbook of Churches and Councils written by World Council of Churches and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been said-and rightly so-that the World Council of Churches (WCC) is first and foremost a fellowship of churches. This book is a vivid illustration of that reality. The descriptions, lists, statistical data, and other information presented in these pages give a striking picture of the extent and diversity of this fellowship. It encompasses a Christian population of some 590 million people, in close to 150 countries in all regions of the world, comprised of over 520,000 local congregations served by some 493,000 pastors and priests, as well as countless elders, teachers, members of parish councils, and others. A Handbook of Churches and Councils is not simply a handbook of the member churches of the WCC. At all levels-global, regional and sub-regional, national, and local-member churches of the WCC interact with other churches which, for various reasons, are not formally part of the Council's membership. By combining in one volume all the conciliar and confessional bodies and their membership, this book demonstrates concretely the reach of the ecumenical movement and also shows how much broader it is than the WCC alone. It serves to remind us that ownership of the movement rests not only with the WCC but with all the partners, and ultimately with God.

Book Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Harpists

Download or read book Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Harpists written by Wenonah M. Govea and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-06-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harp is both the oldest and the newest of instruments. It has existed in some form in nearly all cultures since man has made music. The contemporary concert instrument has been known since the mid-19th century. This work is a compendium of the biographies of many notable harpists of the modern era. The biographies make clear how these performers shaped the contrasts in style and technique of harp playing that have developed over the past 150 years, as cultural, social, and psychological forces influenced individual performance. In addition to the biographical information, the A-Z entries include critical reviews, discographies, and selected bibliographies where possible. New material from the former Soviet states is included.

Book Papal Music and Musicians in Late Medieval and Renaissance Rome

Download or read book Papal Music and Musicians in Late Medieval and Renaissance Rome written by Richard Sherr and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1998-05-21 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects twelve of the papers given at a conference held at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C., on 1-3 April 1993, in conjunction with the exhibition `Rome Reborn: The Vatican Library and Renaissance Culture'. A group of distinguished scholars considered music in medieval and Renaissance Rome. The volume presents a series of wide-ranging and original treatments of music written for and performed in the papal court from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. New discoveries are offered which force a radical reevaluation of the Italian papal court as a musical centre during the Great Schism. A series of motets for various popes are subject to close analysis. New interpretations and information are offered concerning the repertory of the papal chapel in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the institutional life of the papal singers, and the individual biographies of singers and composers. Thought-provoking, even controversial, evaluations of the music of composers connected with, or thought to be connected with, Rome and the papal court, such as Ninot le Petit, Josquin, and Palestrina round out the volume.

Book The Kernel and the Husk

Download or read book The Kernel and the Husk written by Edwin Abbott Abbott and published by . This book was released on 2021-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am more pained than surprised to infer from your last letter that your faith has received a severeshock. A single term at the University has sufficed to make you doubt whether you retain a belief inmiracles; and "If miracles fall, the Bible falls; and with the fall of the Bible I lose Christ; and if Imust regard Christ as a fanatic, I do not see how I can believe in a God who suffered such a one asChrist thus to be deceived and to deceive others." Such appear to be the thoughts that are passingthrough your mind, as I infer them from incidental and indirect expressions rather than from anydefinite statement.Unfortunately I understand all this too well not to be able to follow with ease such phases ofdisbelief even when conveyed in hints. Many young men begin by being taught to believe too much, a great deal too much. Then, when they find they must give up something, (the husk of the kernel)their teachers too often bid them swallow husk and all, on pain of swallowing nothing: and theyprefer to swallow nothing. An instance of this at once occurs to me. Many years ago, a young manwho wished to be ordained, asked me to read the Old Testament with him. We set to work at onceand read some miraculous history-I forget precisely what-in which I thought my young friendmust needs see a difficulty. So I began to point out how the difficulty might be at least diminishedby critical considerations. I say "I began": for I stopped as soon as I had begun, finding that myfriend saw no difficulty at all. He accepted every miracle on every page of the Old and NewTestament on the authority of the Bible; just as a Roman Catholic accepts every ecclesiasticaldoctrine on the authority of the Church. This seemed to me not a state of mind that I ought tointerfere with: I might do more harm than good. So I stopped. But I have since regretted it.Circumstances prevented me from meeting my friend for some weeks. During that time he hadfallen in with companions of negative views, against which he had no power to maintain hisposition: and he had passed from believing everything to believing nothing. That is only too easy atransition; but I hope you will never experience it. Surely there is a medium between swallowing thehusk, and throwing the nut away. Is it not possible to throw away the husk and keep the kernel
