Download or read book Divided We Stand written by Marjorie J. Spruill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than forty years ago, two women's movements drew a line in the sand between liberals and conservatives. The far-reaching legacy of that rift is still felt today. One of Smithsonian Magazine's “Ten Best History Books of the Year” Gloria Steinem was quoted in 2015 (the New Yorker) as saying the National Women's Conference in 1977 "may take the prize as the most important event nobody knows about." After the United Nations established International Women's Year (IWY) in 1975, Congress mandated and funded state conferences to elect delegates to attend the National Women's Conference in Houston in 1977. At that conference, Bella Abzug, Steinem, and other feminists adopted a National Plan of Action, endorsing the hot-button issues of abortion rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, and gay rights--the latter a new issue in national politics. Across town, Phyllis Schlafly, Lottie Beth Hobbs, and the conservative women's movement held a massive rally to protest federally funded feminism and launch a Pro-Family movement. Although much has been written about the role that social issues have played in politics, little attention has been given to the historical impact of women activists on both sides. DIVIDED WE STAND reveals how the battle between feminists and their conservative challengers divided the nation as Democrats continued to support women's rights and Republicans cast themselves as the party of family values. The women's rights movement and the conservative women's movement have irrevocably affected the course of modern American history. We cannot fully understand the present without appreciating the events leading up to Houston and thereafter.

Book What Price Equality

Download or read book What Price Equality written by National Council of Women of New Zealand and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We hear much nowadays about women's rights. The right to equal pay was granted in the legislation of 1972, but many people are convinced that equal pay will mean very little without equal opportunity. The Natinal Council of women of New Zealand has long been deeply interested in these quetions, and in October 1973 undertook a survey of New Zealand women to find out their views. One thousand women in 39 areas were asked thier opinions on equal pay and on various aspects of their working lives, such as their education and training, the vocational guidance they had received, their attitude towards unions and unionism, and their opinions about child care. This book incorporates the results of the survey and adds further facts and figures, comment and argument from the New Zealand scene. Comparisons from other countries, such as Great Britain, France, Australia, Canada and the U.S.A. show what is being done overseas. Other important questions are raised by the introduction of equal pay -- such as the position of the woman who does not work for pay, and the value of her services to the community. The whole book is presented in a way as to provide talking points for further discussion, and appears at a time when the implementation of the Equal Pay ACt and its possible consequences are in the news."--Back cover.

Book The Eastons Five Generations of Human Rights Activism 1748 1935

Download or read book The Eastons Five Generations of Human Rights Activism 1748 1935 written by George R. Price and published by George Price. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a non-fiction, biographical book about some of my direct ancestors and their relatives who stood up for justice and equality and against racism and oppression, between the years of 1748 and 1935. The topics include: Indigenous land rights struggles; the original spirit and egalitarian goals of the American Revolution (before that movement was co-opted and sabotaged by the plantation aristocrats and capitalists); the anti-slavery movement; race theory and racial identities; and the ever-present American anti-racism and equality movements. Most of the action in these stories took place in southeastern Massachusetts, our Wampanoag homelands, but also in other New England locations, and in Texas, New Orleans, and California. Many of these complex-identity people of color were abolitionists, before the Civil War.
