Download or read book Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z written by W. Geoffrey Arnott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z gathers together the ancient information available, listing all the names that ancient Greeks gave their birds and all their descriptions and analyses. W. Geoffrey Arnott identifies as many of them as possible in the light of modern ornithological studies. The ancient Greek bird names are transliterated into English script, and all that the ancients said about birds is presented in English. This book is accordingly the first complete discussion of ancient bird names that will be accessible to readers without ancient Greek. The only large-scale examination of ancient birds for seventy years, the book has an exhaustive bibliography (partly classical scholarship and partly ornithological) to encourage further study, and provides students and ornithologists with the definitive study of ancient birds.
Download or read book Zoological Collections of Germany written by Lothar A. Beck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the knowledge of up to 250 years of collecting, organizing and preserving animals by generations of scientists. Zoological Collections are a huge resource for modern animal research and should be available for national and international scientists and institutions, as well as prospective public and private customers. Moreover, these collections are an important part of the scientific enterprise, supporting scientific research, human health, public education, and the conservation of biodiversity. Much of what we are beginning to understand about our world, we owe to the collection, preservation, and ongoing study of natural specimens. Properly preserved collections of marine or terrestrial animals are libraries of Earth's history and vital to our ability to learn about our place in its future. The approach employed by the editor involves not only an introduction to the topic, but also an external view on German collections including an assessment of their value in the international and national context, and information on the international and national collection networks. Particular attention is given to new approaches of sorting, preserving and researching in Zoological Collections as well as their neglect and/or threat. In addition, the book provides information on all big Public Research Museums, on important Collections in regional Country and local District Museums, and also on University collections. This is a highly informative and carefully presented book, providing scientific insight for readers with an interest in biodiversity, taxonomy, or evolution, as well as natural history collections at large.

Download or read book Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin written by F. di Castri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the massive change in the area of distribution of many world biota across classical biogeographical realms, and of the drastic restructuring of the biotic components of numerous ecosystems, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) decided at its general Assembly in Ottawa, Canada, in 1982 to launch a project on the 'Ecology of Biological Invasions'. Several regional meetings were subsequently organized within the framework of SCOPE, in order to single out the peculiarities of the invasions that took place in each region, the behaviour of their invasive species and the invasibility of their ecosystems. Most noteworthy among such workshops were one in Australia in August 1984, one concerning North America and Hawaii in October 1984, and one dealing with southern Africa in November 1985. A leitmotiv of these workshops was that most of the invasive species to those regions were emanating from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, inadvertently or intentionally introduced by man. It was therefore considered as a timely endeavour to organize the next regional meeting in relation to this region. The workshop on 'Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin' was held in Montpellier, France, 21 to 23 May 1986, thanks to the financial support of SCOPE and of the A.W. Mellon Foundation, and the logistic facilities of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (C.N .R.S.).
Download or read book The Geographical Distribution of Animals written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by . This book was released on 1876 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wallace, together with Darwin was the founder of modern evolutionary theory, and when Darwin received Wallace's paper of 1858 (a year before the publication of the Origin of Species), he wrote to Lyell "All my originality, whatever it may amount to, will be smashed"."I never saw a more striking coincidence.Your words (referring to Lyell's earlier warnings that Darwin might be anticipated) have come true with a vengeance." In 1858 Wallace was already preparing an announcement of an importent zoogeographical discovery, which proposed a boundary line dividing the archipelago of Indo-Malayan and Australian zoological regions. The culmination of Wallace's approach was achieved in his monumental two-volume "The geographical Distribution." and it is a pioneer-work in zoogeography."--Abebooks website.
Download or read book Notes on the Birds of Herefordshire written by Henry Graves Bull and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Birds of Herefordshire: Contributed by Members of the Woolhope Club Hese Notes on the Birds Of Herefordshire were originally written for the purpose of being read at the Field Meetings Of the Woolhope Club; the Members of the Club most kindly helping, by contributing notes of the appearance of any rare or remarkable birds that had come under their notice. Several of the earlier sections Of the book were read in this way; but, by degrees, the scope Of the design was much extended, and all our Herefordshire Birds were included, as far as they could be ascertained. Dr. Bull then wished to publish the whole series of Notes in a separate volume, and had, in fact, completed and arranged the ms. For that purpose. He hoped by this means to increase the interest felt in our feathered companions, and to lead to greater care and method in Observing, naming, and Classifying the very numerous species that either inhabit or visit the county. His sudden illness and death prevented his accomplishing his intention; but his papers were fortunately left by him complete, and he expressed an earnest wish that they Should be published as soon as was possible. There have been unavoidable delays in bringing the work through the press; but it is hoped that the many friends who have listened to the papers in the field, or joined in the discussions to which they gave rise, will like to possess this volume, as a remembrance of one who so truly loved everything connected with Nature, Antiquity, and Science. Book excerpt: The bustards, hemipodes, and sandgrouse represent three taxonomically distinct and diverse families. Most of their members have become adapted to life in deserts, semi-deserts, or steppes of the Old World. This is the first monograph covering any of these groups, and is a companion volume to Paul Johnsgard's The Pheasants of the World and The Quails, Partridges and Francolins of the World. It covers all fifty-one extant species, many of which are rare or endangered, and all but one of them are illustrated by paintings by Major Henry Jones, done from specimens in The Natural History Museum, London. These paintings are owned by the Zoological Society of London and are reproduced with their permission. The lark-quail has been illustrated by a new painting by Mark Marcuson. The text includes comparative chapters on the taxonomy and phylogeny of the three bird groups, their zoogeographic patterns, social behavior, breeding biology, and status (in cases of rare or endangered species). The species accounts include identification criteria, summaries of available biological information, and range descriptions. Keys for the identification of genera and species are also provided, and approximately four hundred literature sources are cited. Collectors of beautiful bird books will want to add this definitive and unique volume to their libraries; it is essential reading for ornithologists, zoologists, naturalists, and anyone concerned with the preservation of this important class of avifauna.
