Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on many years of personal observation, Palladio's Children critically examines the role of the architect as a professional descendent of Palladio, and as an heir to his architectural legacy. Seven innovative and carefully crafted essays explore the widening ideological schism between today’s architects whose core values, identity and education remain rooted in the Renaissance legacy of creating artful ‘masterpieces’, and the practical demands on a profession which acts within an evolving, ubiquitous and autonomous built environment or ‘field’. Clearly written yet expressing complex, evolving ideas, this extended argument opens a new forum of debate across design theory, professional practice and academic issues. Moving the subject on from a historical perspective, Habraken shows how architects are increasingly involved in the design of everyday buildings. This must lead to a reassessment of architects’ identities, values and education, and the contribution of the architect in the shaping of the built environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX ANDREA PALLADIO'S FAMILY AND DECLINING DAYS WE have no information regarding Palladio's marriage, neither do we find any mention made of the wife of so famous a man. She is merely called "Moglie," a word much used in these days even in the noblest families. Her death is also shrouded in uncertainty. It appears a tomb was built by Silla, Palladio's son, and Della Fede, his son-in-law, two years before his own death, and we can but surmise that this may have been for his wife, if not for her, then probably for his only daughter, Zenobia. Palladio had a family of four sons and one daughter. The eldest son, Marc Antonio, became a sculptor, like his father; we find him living at Venice in 1588, and he died in 1600. Leonidas, who assisted his father, died about 1574. We read of his directing the building of the dome at Montagnana in 1566.1 Silla, the youngest, was an architect, and assisted by Scamozzi, completed the Teatro Olimpico, upon which his father was engaged at the time of his death, and died about 1627. Zenobia married Giovanni Battista, afterwards Della Fede, a goldsmith, whose name appears inscribed in the guild of goldsmiths at Vicenza. Orazio, the third son, studied law in Padova in 1564. He was capable, it seems, of writing cultivated poetry, and a sonnet to Giovanna Aragona in 1568 shows great nobility of thought and elegance of style. He died about 1574. Palladio, who appears to have been a most devoted father, gave up much of his time to the instruction of his sons. His treatise upon the works of Caesar in 1575 contained copper engravings executed by them. 1 "Memorie Intorno." A. Palladio. It is extremely pathetic to think of the great man's grief at the loss of his beloved children. His two sons died within a...

Book excerpt: “Palladian Days is nothing short of wonderful–part adventure, mystery, history, diary, and even cookbook. The Gables’ lively account captures the excitement of their acquisition and restoration of one of the greatest houses in Italy. Beguiled by Palladio and the town of Piombino Dese, they trace the history of the Villa Cornaro and their absorption of Italian life. Bravo!” –Susan R. Stein, Gilder Curator and Vice President of Museum Programs, MonticelloIn 1552, in the countryside outside Venice, the great Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio built Villa Cornaro. In 1989, Sally and Carl Gable became its bemused new owners. Called by Town & Country one of the ten most influential buildings in the world, the villa is the centerpiece of the Gables’ enchanting journey into the life of a place that transformed their own. From the villa’s history and its architectural pleasures, to the lives of its former inhabitants, to the charms of the little town that surrounds it, this loving account brings generosity, humor, and a sense of discovery to the story of small-town Italy and its larger national history.

Book excerpt: Palladio (1508-80) combined classical restraint with constant inventiveness. In this study, Professor Ackerman sets Palladio in the context of his age - the Humanist era of Michelangelo and Raphael, Titian and Veronese - and examines each of the villas, churches and palaces in turn and tries to penetrate to the heart of the Palladian miracle. Palladio's theoretical writings are important and illuminating, he suggests, yet they never do justice to the intense intuitive skills of "a magician of light and colour". Indeed, as the photographs in this book reveal, Palladio was "as sensual, as skilled in visual alchemy as any Venetian painter of his time", and his countless imitators have usually captured the details, but not the essence of his style. There are buildings all the way from Philadelphia to Leningrad which bear witness to Palladio's "permanent place in the making of architecture", yet he also deserves to be seen on his own terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrea Palladio's villa architecture is still admired for its elegance and harmony, but little is known about the person behind the buildings. Experienced Palladio researcher Guido Beltramini has worked meticulously on material from historical documents about Palladio's person and life, and assembled a full picture of the architect. Palladio in Private follows his career, his rise from being the ordinary miller's son Pietro della Gondola to become the architect Andrea Palladio. Beltramini does not just explore Palladio's origins, his training as a stonemason, and his complex relationship with powerful clients and scholars, but also his private life: his jovial character, his life as a married man with five children, and not least his profound conviction that architecture can and must enrich life. The text is complemented by numerous illustrations. Guido Beltramini , born in 1961, has been director of the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio in Vicenza since 1991. He has curated numerous exhibitions at venues including the Venice Biennale, the Royal Academy of Art, London, and the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal.

Book The Working Method of Andrea Palladio

Download or read book The Working Method of Andrea Palladio written by Marco Marino and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows through historical data, diagrams and drawings, the design system of an Italian historic center, that of Vicenza, Italy. Vicenza is the result of an urban construction process that has as its model the invention of the Palladian design system. The main argument is how the architectural vision of Andrea Palladio shaped Vincenza to the city it is today. Vicenza is an example of a collective dream, an expression of the best Renaissance artistic culture, a classic example that a city can reform itself through intellectual activity.

Book Living with Palladio in the Sixteenth Century

Download or read book Living with Palladio in the Sixteenth Century written by Antonio Foscari and published by Lars Muller Publishers. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visiting the villas built by Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), one inevitably asks oneself how people lived there in the sixteenth century. Palladio articulated the villas as "small towns" (piccole città) that formed a unit with adjacent service buildings and farm fields. Within their walls lived a multitude of people of all ages, social backgrounds and various skills. They were the venue for significant moments of public life. In these houses, the principles of hygiene, privacy and comfort, which we consider essential today, did not apply; furniture as such, did not exist. Living with Palladio in the Sixteenth Century investigates how Palladio's houses, their floors, rooms and measurements are designed to structure the life of such a heterogeneous family of people. It analyzes their hierarchical structure with the owner (padrone) at the top and everyone involved in the everyday running of the household (famiglia minuta) at the bottom. This book fills a decisive gap in research literature on the famous Italian architect by looking at how Palladio prioritized the domestic functions of his private buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), one of the most famous architects of all time, published two enormously popular guides to the churches and antiquities of Rome in 1554. Striving to be both scholarly and popular, Palladio invited his Renaissance readers to discover the charm of Rome’s ancient and medieval wonders, and to follow pilgrimage routes leading from one church to the next. He also described ancient Roman rituals of birth, marriage, and death. Here translated into English and joined in a single volume for the first time, Palladio’s guidebooks allow modern visitors to enjoy Rome exactly as their predecessors did 450 years ago. Like the originals, this new edition is pocket-sized and therefore easily read on site. Enhanced with illustrations and commentary, the book also includes the first full English translation of Raphael’s famous letter to Pope Leo X on the monuments of ancient Rome. For architectural historians, tourists, and armchair travelers, this book offers fresh and surprising insights into the antiquarian and ecclesiastical preoccupations of one of the greatest of the Renaissance architectural masters.

Book Questioning Architectural Judgment

Download or read book Questioning Architectural Judgment written by Steven A. Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book shines light on the problem of judgment, particularly in the realm of architectural "technics" and the codes that regulate it. The struggle to define "sustainability," and thus judge architecture through such lenses, is but one dimension of the contemporary problem of judgment. By providing the reader with an inherently interdisciplinary study of a particular discipline—architecture, it brings to the topic lenses that challenge the too frequently unexamined assumptions of the discipline. By situating architecture within a broader cultural field and using case studies to dissect the issues discussed, the book emphasizes that it is not simply a matter of designing better, more efficient, or more stringent codes to guide place-making, but a matter of reconstructing the boundaries of the systems to be coded. The authors are winners of the EDRA Place-Research Award 2014 for their work on the Green Alley Demonstration Project used in the book.
