Book Description and Comparison in Cultural Anthropology

Download or read book Description and Comparison in Cultural Anthropology written by Alfred Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures are intended to commemorate both the man and his work the latter being viewed as having provided an admirably broad and substantial base for anthropologists of later generations to build upon, as they have done and continue to do in diverse ways. Professor Goodenough's work, in the past and in this book particularly, emphasizes the vitality and fruitfulness of Morgan's contributions. Not only do these lectures carry forward Morgan's interests in kinship; they reflect as well his concern for comparative studies undertaken with the aim of ultimately understanding mankind. Moreover, Professor Goodenough has elucidated recent developments in the collection, analysis, and presentation of cultural data in ways that make it easier for all of us to see how his methods (in themselves specialized) can broaden and deepen our understanding of culture and of man. Morgan, himself a pioneer in method, would surely have been an attentive auditor-and discussant-at Professor Goodenough's Lectures, and in his seminars and the less formal events in which he participated while at Rochester, and to which he contributed so much. This volume is an expanded version of the Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures delivered at the University of Rochester, April 2 to 11, 1968. Alfred Harris was a professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of Rochester. He served as the chair of the anthropology from 1964-1971 and he was well known for being the editor of the Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures.

Book Description and Comparison in Cultural Anthropology

Download or read book Description and Comparison in Cultural Anthropology written by Ward H. Goodenough and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1980 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are different cultures to be described and compared? This book provides a clear and concise discussion of the theoretical issues involved in ethnographic description and comparative study. Taking up the classic problems in the study of of social organisation, Professor Goodenough describes the major issues in the cross-cultural study of kinship and the family, revealing the kinds of constants, both formal and functional, on which such study must be based. The result is new definitions of marriage, family and parenthood for use in cross-cultural analysis and a greater understanding of this form of analysis itself. The statement on the interdependence of description and comparison in cultural anthropology and its implications for a science of culture, provides fresh insights into cross-cultural analysis for both the theoretical and the practical anthropologist.

Book The anthropology of power agency and morality

Download or read book The anthropology of power agency and morality written by Victor de Munck and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of F. G. Bailey (1924–2020) provide a seminal template for good ethnography. Central to this is Bailey’s ability to conceptually connect the well-described micro-contexts of individual interactions to the macro-context of culture. Bailey’s core concerns – the tension between individual and collective interests, the will to power, and the dialectics of social forces which foster both collective solidarity as well as divisiveness and discontent – are themes of universal interest; the beauty of his work lies in his analyses of how these play out in local arenas between real people. His models provide nuanced, yet explicit road maps to analysing the different leadership styles of everyday people and contemporary leaders. This volume seeks to inspire new generations of anthropologists to revisit Bailey’s seminal texts, to help them navigate their way through the ethnographic thicket of their own research.

A cognitive anthropologist and psychologist, Scott Atran argues that religion is a by-product of human evolution just as the cognitive intervention, cultural selection, and historical survival of religion is an accommodation of certain existential and moral elements that have evolved in the human condition.

Book excerpt: Perhaps the most famous modern-day millenarian movements are the "cargo cults" of Melanesia, active especially during the 1930s and 1950s. Melanesians had long believed that the sign of the millennium would be the arrival of their ancestors in ships bearing lavish material goods, and they interpreted the advent of European vessels as the fulfillment of these expectations. As it became apparent that the Europeans meant to keep the goods and to colonize the people, scores of small-scale revolts known as cargo cults emerged as attempts to secure the cargo and thereby preserve the people's most cherished religious beliefs: native aspirations for individual and cultural redemption fastened on local charismatic leaders, of whom Mambu was the greatest. Originally published in 1995.
