Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a timely reminder of how the past informs the present, Baruch Kimmerling and Joel Migdal offer an authoritative account of the history of the Palestinian people from their modern origins to the Oslo peace process and beyond. Palestinians struggled to create themselves as a people from the first revolt of the Arabs in Palestine in 1834 through the British Mandate to the impact of Zionism and the founding of Israel. Their relationship with the Jewish people and the State of Israel has been fundamental in shaping that identity, and today Palestinians find themselves again at a critical juncture. In the 1990s cornerstones for peace were laid for eventual Palestinian-Israeli coexistence, including mutual acceptance, the renunciation of violence as a permanent strategy, and the establishment for the first time of Palestinian self-government. But the dawn of the twenty-first century saw a reversion to unmitigated hatred and mutual demonization. By mid-2002 the brutal violence of the Intifada had crippled Palestine's fledgling political institutions and threatened the fragile social cohesion painstakingly constructed after 1967. Kimmerling and Migdal unravel what went right--and what went wrong--in the Oslo peace process, and what lessons we can draw about the forces that help to shape a people. The authors present a balanced, insightful, and sobering look at the realities of creating peace in the Middle East.

In practice, however, this is not always the case. Book Developing the Occupied Territories The economy

Download or read book Developing the Occupied Territories The economy written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Kyrgyzstan moves toward a market economy, it faces population growth, rising unemployment, and increased poverty. The guidelines in this study show how transitional economies can deliver social services to the people who will need them most. Recommendations to improve the labor market include ways to retrain workers, provide unemployment benefits, create a government employment service, and deal with mass layoffs. The report suggests calculating a specific poverty line so that subsidies may be directed more carefully to those in need and social spending may be reduced. This poverty line would be used with other government measures to reform pensions, family allowances, maternity benefits, sick pay, and subsidies for food and heating fuel. Additional reforms suggest ways to strengthen social services and improve policies for education, health care, and family planning. They survey different ways to monitor poverty, allocate budgets, and exploit the services of nongovernmental organizations.

Book Education among Indigenous Palestinians in Israel

Download or read book Education among Indigenous Palestinians in Israel written by Majid Al-Haj and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unparalleled in its scope, this book provides a detailed longitudinal analysis of indigenous Palestinian education in Israel since the establishment of the state. Taking a comparative approach, Majid Al-Haj juxtaposes the Arab and Hebrew education systems in Israel, from early childhood through higher education, looking at their administration, resources, curriculum content, and outcomes. Significantly, the book represents the first systematic examination of an authentic model for social change and educational empowerment initiated by Palestinian Arabs in Israel through a civil society organization. Blending quantitative and qualitative methods, Al-Haj addresses widely debated theoretical questions about the role of education among indigenous minorities and disadvantaged groups in the context of cultural hegemony and inequalities, on the one hand, and self-empowerment and social change, on the other. Lastly, Al-Haj offers a review of the pre-state period and considers the impact of the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict on the goals, substance, and narratives of Arab and Hebrew education.
