Book excerpt: The ihsan Ketin NATO Advanced Study Institute on the Tectonic Evolution of the Tethyan Region was conceived in 1982 in Veszprem, Hungary, when three of the organizers (B. C. B. , L. H. R. and A. M. C. 9. ) had come together for a meeting on the tectonics of the Pannonian basin. All three of us had experience in the Tethyan belt and all three of us had been for some time deploring the lack of communication among workers of this immense orogenic belt. Much new work had been completed in such previously little-known areas as Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, the People's Republic of China, the entire Himalayan region, as well as new work in the European parts of the chain. Also, ironically, parts of the belt had just been closed to field work for political reasons, so it seemed as if the time was right to sit back and consider what had been done so far. Because the Istanbul group had had an interest in the whole of the Tethyan belt and because that ancient city was more centrally locElted with excellent opportunities to see both Palaeo- and Neo-Tethyan rocks in a weekend excursion, we thought that Istanbul was a natural place for such a meeting, not mentioning its own considerable attractions for the would-be contributors. Although the first reports on fossils from some of these formations were published as early as the 1890s, it is only since 1980 that floras and faunas from the Permian, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous of SE Asia have received the attention they deserve. Fieldwork in various parts of Thailand and Laos has revealed a succession of fossil assemblages that now allows a reconstruction of the evolution of continental ecosystems in that part of the world during the Late Palaeozoic and the Mesozoic. The first papers in this book present the geological background of these floral and faunal successions, as well as historical aspects of their discovery. Descriptions of new taxa and review papers deal with plants, sharks, bony fishes, turtles, crocodilians, dinosaurs and mammal-like reptiles. Papers about the Mesozoic palaeobiogeography, environments and climates of Asia conclude the volume.

The concept of “accreted terranes,” that continents grow by the addition of displaced fragments of crust, was the central topic of a recent multidisciplinary symposium sponsored by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). This volume contains a selection of papers presented in Symposium 12 at XIX General Assembly of the IUGG, held August 15–18, 1987, in Vancouver. Convenors Edward Irving and David Stone focused the program on two major themes. The first was to track the displacement of terranes using paleomagnetism, geologic mapping, and paleontology. The second theme was to explore the deep structure of accreted terranes using seismological, geochemical, and potential-field methods. Given the scope of those topics, it is no surprise that the participants represented many specialties within the field of solid-earth geophysics. The program included case histories from a collection of fold belts spanning much time and long distances, from the Proterozoic sutures of North America to the Cenozoic accretionary complexes of the Pacific rim.
