Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Eisner Award for the Best Comics-Related Book Published in partnership with the Library of Congress, Drawn to Purpose: American Women Illustrators and Cartoonists presents an overarching survey of women in American illustration, from the late nineteenth into the twenty-first century. Martha H. Kennedy brings special attention to forms that have heretofore received scant notice—cover designs, editorial illustrations, and political cartoons—and reveals the contributions of acclaimed cartoonists and illustrators, along with many whose work has been overlooked. Featuring over 250 color illustrations, including eye-catching original art from the collections of the Library of Congress, Drawn to Purpose provides insight into the personal and professional experiences of eighty women who created these works. Included are artists Roz Chast, Lynda Barry, Lynn Johnston, and Jillian Tamaki. The artists' stories, shaped by their access to artistic training, the impact of marriage and children on careers, and experiences of gender bias in the marketplace, serve as vivid reminders of social change during a period in which the roles and interests of women broadened from the private to the public sphere. The vast, often neglected, body of artistic achievement by women remains an important part of our visual culture. The lives and work of the women responsible for it merit much further attention than they have received thus far. For readers who care about cartooning and illustration, Drawn to Purpose provides valuable insight into this rich heritage.

Book The Belles of Christiania

Download or read book The Belles of Christiania written by Ken Hokeness and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Belles of Christiania is a serious but funny novel about the problematic home life, the academic challenges of college, and the frustrating romantic relationships of Neal Olavson. Neals widowed mother, Marian, constantly nags him about his shortcomings while he is living at home with her. She cannot recover from the death of her handsome husband, so she measures Neal by his standards, while holding her oldest son, Phil, in high esteem because of his athletic and academic achievements. Marian has just rejected her alcoholic boyfriend, Al, whom Neal sees as his father figure. Since Neal is not a top student, he fears that he will flunk out of Christiania, and he seeks help in math from his friend, Dean Carlson, a premed whiz in math. Dean likes to lead Neal around by the nose and makes plans for Neal to hook up with Christie Norheim. The two Romeos seem to find luck one night when they find Chrsitie and her friend Astrid in a booth at Oscars Deli, next to the college. But, Neals pursuit of the beautiful, rich, and sophisticated Christie from California is frustrated every step. Marian interferes one night at a dinner party at Neals home and apparently kills all of Neals chances for a romantic relationship with Christie. At the same time, Phil is accused of cheating on a philosophy exam and could be expelled from Christiania just days before his graduation. He has recently proposed to his lovely classmate, Betsy, and she is deeply involved in Phils cheating scandal. In the end, Neals problems are basically resolved at Phils graduation party, after Marian introduces Neal to Maren Makuson, a very cute friend of Betsys, who needs a ride home to a neighboring town.

Book excerpt: Golap Chandra Khound’s Girmit (‘Indenture’) is a collection of ten short stories based on the tea gardens of Assam. Khound earned notable fame as a short story writer of the Ramdhenu era (1951-1967) and he is at his dexterous best in this collection of short stories based on the highly idiosyncratic tea garden way of Assam. The word ‘Girmit’ roughly translates to ‘agreement’ or ‘contract’ and all the stories in this collection feature the indentured labourers and their lives as deeply woven with the tea plantations of colonial and post-colonial Assam. Girmit has stories of the exploiters and the exploited; of the British Sahibs and their Indian shadows or Babus; of a bountiful landscape and tea garden people; of hopes, horrors and terrifying consequences and of pathos and promise.

Book The Literature of Leisure and Chinese Modernity

Download or read book The Literature of Leisure and Chinese Modernity written by Charles A. Laughlin and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-03-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese essay is arguably China’s most distinctive contribution to modern world literature, and the period of its greatest influence and popularity—the mid-1930s—is the central concern of this book. What Charles Laughlin terms "the literature of leisure" is a modern literary response to the cultural past that manifests itself most conspicuously in the form of short, informal essay writing (xiaopin wen). Laughlin examines the essay both as a widely practiced and influential genre of literary expression and as an important counter-discourse to the revolutionary tradition of New Literature (especially realistic fiction), often viewed as the dominant mode of literature at the time. After articulating the relationship between the premodern traditions of leisure literature and the modern essay, Laughlin treats the various essay styles representing different groups of writers. Each is characterized according to a single defining activity: "wandering" in the case of the Yu si (Threads of Conversation) group surrounding Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren; "learning" with the White Horse Lake group of Zhejiang schoolteachers like Feng Zikai and Xia Mianzun; "enjoying" in the case of Lin Yutang’s Analects group; "dreaming" with the Beijing school. The concluding chapter outlines the impact of leisure literature on Chinese culture up to the present day. The Literature of Leisure and Chinese Modernity dramatizes the vast importance and unique nature of creative nonfiction prose writing in modern China. It will be eagerly read by those with an interest in twentieth-century Chinese literature, modern China, and East Asian or world literatures.

Book excerpt: Nero Wolfe Award Finalist for 2018 Cal Claxton's old farmhouse sits high in Oregon's Red Hills, home of scores of wineries and some of the most coveted acreage for growing the pinot noir grape in the world. Former Los Angeles prosecutor Cal settled in this haven to reboot his life as a widower, growing a small practice that includes some pro bono work in nearby Portland. Life is good, filled with food, wine, and friends. But this beautiful area is not the idyllic haven it appears to be. When Cal's neighbor, Jim Kavanaugh, the owner and gifted vintner of an up-and-coming winery, is accused of murdering his wife, his freedom-and the grape harvest-is suddenly in jeopardy along with his reputation, and his business begins to slide. No gentleman farmer, this puts the rugged winemaker's property, his only financial asset, in play. When a blackmail plot is hatched against the owner of adjacent land, it begins to look like a brutal game of real-life Monopoly is underway. Cal agrees to defend Jim, a good friend, which pulls him reluctantly into the blackmail plot. Emotions are running high over Lori Kavanaugh's bloody death. There is no shortage of suspects. There may be more than the one game in play. And defending Jim might well make Cal the next target of a vicious, cunning killer.
