  • Publisher : International Monetary Fund
  • Release : 2002-03-28
  • ISBN : 1451831498
  • Pages : 47 pages

Download or read book Republic of Palau written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002-03-28 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines recent economic developments in the Republic of Palau. Palau has made a modest recovery in 2000 and 2001. Real GDP growth has been about 1 percent in 2000 and 2001, after the recession brought about by the Asian crisis reached its trough of negative 51⁄2 percent growth in 1999. This recovery was mainly owing to grant-financed large infrastructure projects. However, the outlook on tourism, Palau’s major industry, remains weak owing to the events on September 11, and the expected El Nino, which also threaten the development of tourism-related private sector projects.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of the Pacific Rim

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of the Pacific Rim written by Inderjit Kaur and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Rim is a dynamic and diverse economic region, containing the world's three largest economies (US, China, and Japan), as well as many of the world's fastest growing and emerging market economies. Trans-Pacific economic exchange, including trade and capital movements, has been an important driver of the world economy, simultaneosly contributing to growth and global imbalances. Within the Asia-Pacific region there has been an increase in trade and investment, as well as the development of value chain linkages through outsourcing and foreign direct investment. The new debate in this region centers around managing this economic integration and the vagaries of globalization while supporting continued high growth. The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of the Pacific Rim provides institutional and historical perspectives on the Pacific Rim's unique economic situation, considers various dimensions of economic policies, and examines the growth process and specific challenges to growth. It discusses the key theme of regional economic integration in its many dimensions, including trade, investment, monetary coordination, crisis management, and value networks.

Section 2 provides a snapshot of inequalities in access to improved drinking water sources and sanitation. Book Australia Oceania Antarctica

Download or read book Australia Oceania Antarctica written by Kevin Hillstrom and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-11-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise yet thorough overview of environmental issues, problems, and controversies facing Australia, Oceania, and Antarctica. They are vast, distant, and scarcely populated. Yet the environments of Australia, Oceania, and Antarctica are facing the same threats confronting the rest of the planet, as well as some unique ones of their own. How have human-introduced species impacted Australia's natural order? What new global conventions are helping close Antarctica's ozone hole? And how is global climate change threatening the South Pacific's species-rich coral reefs? The region's governments are grappling with the spectre of global warming, which, if not meaningfullly addressed by industrialized nations half a world away, could produce rising sea levels capable of engulfing several states of Oceania and partially submerging portions of many other inhabited islands. Australia, Oceania, and Antarctica tackles the difficult issues, tough problems, and political controversies surrounding these lands of extremes.

Book Women in the Olympics

Download or read book Women in the Olympics written by Lindsay Parks Pieper and published by Common Ground Research Networks. This book was released on 2023-06-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the Olympics traces the history of women in the Olympic Games. This pocket book offers details about important milestones in Olympic history and illustrates the salient themes that have shaped women’s involvement in the Games. From ancient times to today, women have always had a tenuous position in the Olympics. When Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern Olympic Movement at the end of the nineteenth century, he did not include women in his vision. He viewed the Olympics as a way for boys to cultivate manliness and men to demonstrate masculinity. Women eventually overcame such prejudices and competed at 1900 Olympics. Despite their inclusion, they remained beset by roadblocks. Sports that Olympic officials considered too grueling, taxing, or physical remained off limits to women. Leaders introduced sex tests to remove muscular female Olympians who breached gender norms from the Games. The Olympics were inaccessible for women in certain countries. And women remained severely underrepresented in the Olympic governance structure. Women in the Olympics shows how women have continuously fought for increased opportunities as athletes, equal access to elite sports, and a place in the decision-making process.
