Book Maoism in India and Nepal

Download or read book Maoism in India and Nepal written by Ranjit Bhushan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are Maoist, Naxalite and Left extremist movements taking root in the most backward and underdeveloped regions of South Asia? This book examines this multi-layered question in democracies such as India and Nepal through an analysis of these movements as well as their leaderships and ideologies. Through a series of detailed interviews and dialogues, it sheds fresh light into the minds and actions of people who have critically defined the nature of Maoism and related movements in the region. Weaving together diverse narratives, voices, and streams of dissent, this first-of-its-kind volume brings cohesion to the seemingly fragmented but formidable Maoist politics in South Asia. It also highlights how such ‘civil wars’ are embedded into the larger politics of the region. Perceptive and lucid, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of politics, sociology, peace and conflict studies, and security studies, especially those concerned with Maoism and social movements. It will also be useful to government institutions and policy-makers.

Book Imaginary Maps

Download or read book Imaginary Maps written by Mahasweta Devi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaginary Maps presents three stories from noted Bengali writer Mahasweta Devi in conjunction with readings of these tales by famed cultural and literary critic, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. Weaving history, myth and current political realities, these stories explore troubling motifs in contemporary Indian life through the figures and narratives of indigenous tribes in India. At once delicate and violent, Devi's stories map the experiences of the "tribals" and tribal life under decolonization. In "The Hunt," "Douloti the Bountiful" and the deftly wrought allegory of tribal agony "Pterodactyl, Pirtha, and Puran Sahay," Ms. Devi links the specific fate of tribals in India to that of marginalized peoples everywhere. Gayatri Spivak's readings of these stories connect the necessary "power lines" within them, not only between local and international structures of power (patriarchy, nationalisms, late capitalism), but also to the university.

Book Reclaiming Indigeneity and Democracy in India s Jharkhand

Download or read book Reclaiming Indigeneity and Democracy in India s Jharkhand written by Ipshita Basu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Created in 2000 following a long-standing regional movement, Jharkhand-the land of forests-represents an important experiment in regional autonomy and self-determination for indigenous communities in a postcolonial democracy. Over two decades, Jharkhand has experienced a volatile political environment as competing political groups have mobilised indigenous subaltern communities for different ends. In Reclaiming Indigeneity and Democracy in India's Jharkhand, Ipshita Basu contributes to scholarship on critical social justice and indigeneity by highlighting 'relations of justification' as a central feature of group-based claims-making for social groups identifying with indigeneity in diverse ways. Specifically, the book focuses on reclaiming political recognition for Adivasis within the contemporary dynamics of majoritarian populism and the market economy. Uniting perspectives from philosophy (social justice), politics (democracy and public reasoning), and culture studies (identity), and based on ethnographic and archival research, the author indicates that when 'relations' are at the epicentre of claims-making, expressive attachments determine political activism over the instrumental choices that groups are compelled to make in the context of large power differentials. This book is a timely account of indigenous politics and is an attempt to foreground the complex 'political nature' of social justice claims-making in a democracy such as India.

Book excerpt: Maoism in india is an attempt to study and analyse the movement. already a number of left intellectuals and scholars have studied the movement and written about it. my attempt has been to find out the difference between the naxalite and cpi (maoist) movements. is there any difference as such? though the naxalite movement took birth in naxalbari in 1967; it is still striving to find a sustainable support base. the naxalite movement got its name from naxalbari village where the first major uprising took place. also; through the merger of the people’s war and the maoist communist centre (mcc); communist party of india (maoist) was formed in 2004 which aims to overthrow the government of india through people’s war. why an organization which was perceived as the forum of the “deprived and alienated sections of the population” was described as “the single biggest internal security challenge”. usually; people confuse themselves over maoists and naxalities and cannot exactly trace the difference between the two terminologies. media simply adds to the confusion. the communist party of india (maoist) aims to overthrow the government of india through people’s war. i also tried to find out the reasons which made the maoists in recent times to focus more on arms intervention than taking to organizing mass resistance movement.

Book Armed Conflict and Environmental Damage

Download or read book Armed Conflict and Environmental Damage written by Dr. U C Jha and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armed conflict and military activities have serious adverse impacts on the environment. Modern weaponry, troop movements, landmines, hazardous military waste, and the destruction of forests for military use are a few sources of harm to the environment both during armed conflict and peacetime military activities. Ecological assaults in combat areas are often kept a secret by the government, resulting in even greater humanitarian and environmental harm. Environmental degradation is increasingly being recognized as one of the most significant challenges of the 21st century and its effects are being felt worldwide. Both domestic and international legislations have been inadequate in mitigating the impact of military activities. This book provides details of the environmental destruction wreaked during international and non-international armed conflicts and argues that the existing legal regime for the protection of the environment during armed conflict requires substantial modification. It puts forward the view that though it is inconceivable to impose an absolute ban on environmental damage during military operations, strengthening and clarifying the existing laws protecting the environment in times of conflict, and enforcing environment-friendly practices among military forces could go a long way in protecting natural assets of our earth.
