Book excerpt: A well‐preserved early Middle Palaeolithic site set against a wider northwestern European context The shift from Lower to Middle Palaeolithic in northwestern Europe (dated to around 300,000–250,000 years ago) remains poorly understood and underexplored compared to more recent archaeological transitions. During this period, stone tool technologies underwent significant changes but the limited number of known sites and the general low spatio‐temporal resolution of the archaeological record in many cases has impeded detailed behavioural inferences. Brickyard‐quarrying activities at Kesselt‐Op de Schans (Limburg, Belgium) led to the discovery and excavation of a well‐preserved early Middle Palaeolithic level buried beneath a 10 m thick loess-palaeosol sequence. The present volume offers a comprehensive report on the site, dated to around 280,000 years ago, set against a wider northwestern European context. An in‐depth study of the lithic assemblage, including an extensive refitting analysis, provides detailed information on the technological behaviour of prehistoric hominins in the Meuse basin during this crucial time period. The much-discussed split between advocates of a single, early emergence of anatomically modern humans in sub-Saharan Africa and supporters of various regional continuity positions is only part of the picture. Equally if not more important are questions surrounding the origins of modern behavior, and the relationships between anatomical and behavioral changes that occurred during the past 200,000 years. Although modern humans as a species may be defined in terms of their skeletal anatomy, it is their behavior, and the social and cognitive structures that support that behavior, which most clearly distinguish Homo sapiens from earlier forms of humans. This book assembles researchers working in Eurasia and Africa to discuss the archaeological record of the Middle Paleolithic and the Middle Stone Age. This is a time period when Homo sapiens last shared the world with other species, and during which patterns of behavior characteristic of modern humans developed and coalesced. Contributions to this volume query and challenge some current notions about the tempo and mode of cultural evolution, and about the processes that underlie the emergence of modern behavior. The papers focus on several fundamental questions. Do typical elements of "modern human behavior" appear suddenly, or are there earlier archaeological precursors of them? Book excerpt: This book is an offshoot of the international Ukrainian-German research programme on "Functional variability in the Late Middle Palaeolithic of Crimea Peninsula, Ukraine" undertaken by the Crimean branch of the Ukrainian Academy of Science and the University of Cologne. This volume presents one of several complexes from earlier excavations now re-analysed for publication. Kiik-Koba Grotto is famous for its Neanderthal burials published with special attention to Neanderthal hands in G. A. Bonch-Osmolowski's excavation report. The present volume contains preface, introduction and eight chapters. It starts with an appreciation of Bonch-Osmolowski, the history of investigations, and new analytic approaches to the Kiik-Koba Micoquian flint artefacts. Next are techno-typological data and reduction models of the Micoquian flint artefacts from layer IV. Chapter V deals with the original assemblage of this layer and the Crimean Micoquian in general. Attention is also paid to bone retouchers from the upper layer of Kiik-Koba Grotto and to the zooarchaeological analysis of the large mammalian fauna from layer IV.
