Book Palaeohydrology in Practice

Download or read book Palaeohydrology in Practice written by K. J. Gregory and published by . This book was released on 1987-11-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies collected in this volume were conducted as part of the International Geological Correlation Program, organized to encourage research devoted to identifying and assessing the earth's natural resources and improving the state of our environment. Representing current research in the field, this volume looks at several aspects of water as a natural resource and how natural and engineered water systems interact with the surrounding environment. Its major focus is on the environmental evolution of hydrological systems, their formation and changes over time, and the impact of human activity on such changes. Coverage includes an analysis of climatic change in Central Britain over the past millenium; the palaeoecology of the Severn Basin during the late Quaternary Age; prehistoric irrigation practices in the Severn Basin; and an overview of the evolution of European rivers. The discussions offered here are intended to provide clues to possible approaches for preserving and improving the earth's environment and to extend models of environmental change in order to illuminate what to expect in the future.

Book excerpt: The book provides a review of the most relevant topics on the booming discipline of palaeohydrology and focuses on previous extreme events like exceptional floods and droughts. Reviews written by leading experts of their fields are combined with selected key studies and presentations on up-to-day methodical and conceptional topics as a perspective for further research. Consequently, the compilation provides an excellent review on the state of the art of numerous relevant topics of palaeohydrology and acts as unique introduction for early career scientists and scientists of different disciplines working on hydrological extreme events, both in basic research and applied aspects.

Book Global Continental Changes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia Branson
  • Publisher : Geological Society of London
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9781897799697
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Global Continental Changes written by Julia Branson and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 1996 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palaeohydrology is the study of changes in the waters of the Earth prior to continuous monitoring. Knowledge of these changes is important for the understanding of past and present environmental changes and of the form of the present-day environment. The evolution of the hydrological cycle in response to climatic change produces a chain of environmental and human consequences -- factors that are becoming more relevant as climate change is predicted. Evidence of past environmental changes may be used to validate models with which to predict future change -- thus the study of rates, mechanisms and processes of Late Quaternary hydrological changes is of critical importance. This volume is designed for all who are interested in the hydrological impacts of climatic change and the contribution that palaeohydrology can make to the study of these changes.

Book Morphometry of Drainage Basins

Download or read book Morphometry of Drainage Basins written by I. Zavoianu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the drainage basin as a system unit resulting from the interaction between runoff and topography - a lengthy process of evolution that occurs according to well-defined laws. It aims not to quantify the agents which created the present forms, but to analyse the forms themselves in order to establish the laws according to which they develop, and to define a series of inter-relationships between morphometrical parameters and river discharge.

Book The River Basin in History and Law

Download or read book The River Basin in History and Law written by Ludwik A. Teclaff and published by Springer. This book was released on 1967 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh water is one of man's most vital needs. The distribution of water within river basins has a direct bearing on the organization of water resources development to meet this ever-expanding need. River basins, despite their very great diversity in other respects, have one physical characteristic in common: each is a more or less self-contained unit within whose bounds all the surface and part or all of the ground waters form an interconnected, interdependent system. This inter dependence has such far-reaching implications - for pollution and flood control, apportionment of supply, relations between upstream and downstream riparians, to mention only a few examples - that the river basin has become almost universally accepted (within the past 20 or 30 years at least) as the unit of optimal water resources de velopment. Professor Teclaff's work (which was originally submitted to the New York University School of Law as a doctoral dissertation) is the first fully developed response to the important resolution passed by the International Law Association at its New York meeting in I958 recognizing the legal nature of the international river basin. His study quite properly, therefore, poses the question whether the adoption of the river basin unit is a temporary phenomenon, reflecting the current stage of technology and of administrative, economic, and legal thought on water resources development, or whether the de terminative influence of the river basin's physical unity which has always operated in the past will continue to operate in the future.
