Download or read book New Perspectives on Pakistan s Political Economy written by Matthew McCartney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes a major intervention in the debates around the nature of the political economy of Pakistan, focusing on its contemporary social dynamics. This is the first comprehensive academic analysis of Pakistan's political economy after thirty-five years, and addresses issues of state, class and society, examining gender, the middle classes, the media, the bazaar economy, urban spaces and the new elite. The book goes beyond the contemporary obsession with terrorism and extremism, political Islam, and simple 'civilian–military relations', and looks at modern-day Pakistan through the lens of varied academic disciplines. It not only brings together new work by some emerging scholars but also formulates a new political economy for the country, reflecting the contemporary reality and diversification in the social sciences in Pakistan. The chapters dynamically and dialectically capture emergent processes and trends in framing Pakistan's political economy and invite scholars to engage with and move beyond these concerns and issues.

Book excerpt: With the CPEC, Pakistan may have a new infrastructure on its land, but it is for the Chinese goods and lorries; and to advance the Chinese global agenda. Aim of the CPEC is not to empower Pakistan and its people. In view of many Pakistanis, this new relationship is not an economic partnership with China. It is a new form of colonialism, but if the Pakistani ruling elite, and people of Pakistan are happy with this new relationship then no one from outside can help them.

Book Cost of Floods on Pakistan s Economy

Download or read book Cost of Floods on Pakistan s Economy written by Javeria Niazi and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an average annual rainfall of less than 240 mm, Pakistan is one of the most arid countries in the world. Every year, during the monsoon season from July to September, Pakistan experiences heavy rainfalls. However, this year the substantial amount of unexpected monsoon rainfall resulted in heavy floods as a consequence of the absence of adequate infrastructure (dams, barrages, reservoirs). The heavy rainfall started in the last week of July 2010, and continued for days in the regions of Balochistan, followed closely by a second spell in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). The rain continued until the first few days of August 2010, causing tremendous damage to both property and lives. The heavy rainfall flooded the already flooded rivers and streams, causing the river banks to burst. The flood water started causing destruction in KPK, and continued its journey towards Punjab and Sindh. The floods in Pakistan have had an impact on all the sectors of the economy. Handling these problems would require a model that could simultaneously capture the major relations among different sectors of the economy, and thereby, trace through the indirect and secondary effects on the economy. The model used to calculate the impact is subjected to a number of simulations that are run on E-views. In this study, the author uses a model that reports clearly what Pakistan will face in terms of production loss and recovery. The results are assessed on the basis of past data and the current situation in the country. The author's main purpose is to define the costs Pakistan faces in such a situation, and further, to develop policy recommendations.

Book Pakistan s Economy at the Crossroads

Download or read book Pakistan s Economy at the Crossroads written by Parvez Hasan and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by the former chief of the World Bank Mission in Central Asia, presents an assessment of Pakistan's economic record and performance over the last fifty years. Hasan examines the role of politics and economic policies in explaining Pakistan's development experience and highlights the sources of present economic difficulties. A unique feature of the book is that the analysis of the period prior to separation presents trends for East and West Pakistan separately and focuses on inter-regional economic issues that became so divisive in the final years of united Pakistan. Drawing on these past lessons, the book also presents an agenda for policy and institutional reform for the future.

Written to be read on a long commute or in your lunch hour - be better informed in under an hour. Pakistan is in a tricky situation. It is under constant scrutiny by the world media but is more often than not described in terms of its problems. There are indeed difficulties - bordering the unsettled nations of Afghanistan and Iran puts it in a precarious position. A poor and badly educated population for the most part is not helping the country's growth. There is hope. The wealth of natural resources, a growing, urban population and a more democratic government all point to a positive future. But with the NATO withdrawal from its troubled neighbours nearing, Pakistan's survival hangs in the balance. Simon Long's special report includes the following sections: Perilous Journey Too close for comfort State of vulnerability Captain's innings In the shadow of the mosque Lights off A taste of Hunny Always with us Dripping with blood Going with the flow
