Book excerpt: Since its first appearance, Geography: Realms, Regions, and Concepts has consistently broken new ground in the interpretation and teaching of world regional geography. For more than four decades, REGIONS, as it has come to be called, has explained the contemporary world's geographic realms and their natural environments and human dimensions. The authors look at the ways people have organized their living space, adapted to changing social as well as environmental circumstances, and continue to confront forces largely beyond their control, ranging from globalization to climate change. This book was the first to introduce an approach to Geography that meshes theoretical concepts with regional realities. The evolving regional content of the chapters in REGIONS, 18th Edition, reflects the dynamic nature of the world's geography; the changing and growing number of concepts mirror the progress of the discipline; and the ongoing introduction of new digital features reflects the instructional possibilities of new technologies.

Book Perspectives on Contemporary Pakistan

Download or read book Perspectives on Contemporary Pakistan written by Ghulam Ali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses problems of governance, development and environment affecting contemporary Pakistan; issues that lie at the centre of federal and provincial policy deliberations, formulation and implementation. The book offers a comprehensive assessment of the policies, or lack thereof. Authors from a variety of disciplines empirically and conceptually evaluate latest developments, events and data regarding law and order, economic under-performance, social intolerance and climate crisis. The book offers varied perspectives on state sovereignty, civil-military relations, spousal violence, rural development, CPEC, nuclear governance and transboundary climate risk. Arguing that the conclusions should be adopted by the social, political and economic stakeholders of Pakistan, as well as the region at the higher level of governability, the book demonstrates that it would both boost national morale and inspire individuals to further investigate to come up with innovative solutions. Examining some of the most pressing and persistent problems Pakistan and South Asia is facing, the book will be of interest to academics working in the fields of Political Science, in particular South Asian Politics, Development Studies and Environmental Studies.

Book Memorable War Stories

Download or read book Memorable War Stories written by Ranbir Singh Gp Capt and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memorable War Stories is a collection of 27 war stories and incidents placing on record the exciting exploits of our own fliers of the Indian Air Force and the intrepid fighters of the Army and Navy operating in our own environment. All the stories/incidents recorded in the book are true and factually correct, and are based on research, first person accounts, and published stories carried by different newspapers and magazines over a period of time. Although most of the names of the crews have been clipped down to their squadron nicknames, nevertheless they will be quite identifiable to their colleagues and contemporaries. The book has been fictionalised to an extent to make it readable and bring in the human angle, but there is no compromise on the factual details. The war stories and the other incidents cover a wide spectrum beginning with the Kashmir operations and race the reader through the 1962 Sino-Indian Frontier War, the Twenty Two Fateful Days of the 1965 Indo-Pak Conflict, the Fourteen Days 1971 war, and not forgetting the Kargil Operation Vijay. The book has been written in an easy and fluid style which makes it immensely readable, and the simple language though with a defence flavour should find favour with the men-in-uniform as well as civilians. It is a welcome addition to the books on defence themes.

Book Pakistan

  • Author : Rohan Gunaratna
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books
  • Release : 2012-01-01
  • ISBN : 1780230095
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Pakistan written by Rohan Gunaratna and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As made abundantly clear in the classified documents recently made public by WikiLeaks, Pakistan is the keystone in the international fight against terrorism today. After the US-led coalition targeted terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan, these groups, including al Qaeda and the Taliban, relocated to the Federally Administered Tribal Area of Pakistan. From its base in this remote, inhospitable region of Pakistan, al Qaeda and its associated cells have planned, prepared, and executed numerous terrorist attacks around the world, in addition to supporting and waging insurgencies in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, and elsewhere. This book is the first detailed analysis of the myriad insurgent groups working in Pakistan. Written by well-known expert on global terrorism Rohan Gunaratna and Khuram Iqbal, a leading scholar in Pakistan, the book examines and reviews the nature, structure, and agendas of the groups, their links to activists in other countries, such as India and Iran, and the difficulties of defeating terrorism in this part of the world. Drawing on extensive field research and interviews with government officials and former terrorists, the authors argue that Pakistan faces grave and continuing pressures from within, and that without steadfast international goodwill and support, the threats of extremism, terrorism, and insurgency will continue to grow. This timely and necessary book argues that if the international community is to win the battle against ideological extremism and operational terrorism around the world, then Pakistan should be in the vanguard of the fight.
