Comprometerse con nuestro tiempo histórico conlleva asumir que el paradigma positivista-lógico ha sido envuelto, que no desplazado, por el paradigma de la complejidad. El principio de la causalidad, y la independencia de “causa-efecto” del observador, es cuestionado por el paradigma complejo, para el que en la gestión del conocimiento el propio observador está imputado como un dato o suceso en el propio proceso. La profesora García-Hípola nos conduce por su ensayo a escenarios teórico-críticos a través de su propia experiencia, incluso de su protagonismo en los procesos, reflexiones y cuestiones que analiza. Es desde esa complejidad desde la que reivindica implícitamente en su texto la transversalidad entre autor, espectador, docente y creador, literalmente en las citas referidas a experiencias sobre la obra de El Bosco, o en las que somete al arquitecto a nuevos roles que devienen del comportamiento de la materia como un auténtico ecólogo o los del propio antropólogo que explora la acción del ser humano y sus detritus en el paisaje, como en su proyecto para Villajoyosa, verdadero tratado de “arquitectura de campo”. In The Landscape of Architecture the author has remarkably surpassed the contradiction between a necessarily logical-linear explanation, to facilitate the intelligibility of the content, and its vast complexity. This is an inescapable complexity for a trustworthy description and analysis of contemporary knowledge. Commitment to our historical time involves assuming that the logical positivist paradigm has been wrapped, not displaced, by the paradigm of complexity. The principle of causality, and the independence between “cause and effect” of the observer, is questioned by the complex paradigm, for which, in the management of knowledge, the observer is ascribed as data or event of the process itself. In her essay professor García-Hípola leads us to theoretical-critical scenarios through her own experience, including her protagonism in the processes, reflections, and issues that she analyzes. From this complexity, the transversality between author, spectator, teacher and creator is claimed, literally in the quotes of the experiences about Hieronymus Bosch’s work, or in those where the architect is subjected to new roles that come from matter’s behavior, as a true ecologist, or those of the anthropologist who explores human action and its detritus in the landscape, as in her project for Villajoyosa, veritable treatise of “field architecture”.

This research evaluates links between the emergence of centralized leadership and the organization of agricultural production. The focus is on reconstructing the demographic history of 137 km2 based on a full coverage systematic survey, and on reconstructing patterns of food production and consumption based on analysis of pollen, phytoliths and plant macroremains from the excavation of 31 tests at locations representing different environmental settings and settlement types. The study proposes a sequence starting at about 600 B.C., with the first manifestations of a regional system of centralized authority appearing after about 500 A.D. Neither control of basic resources nor specialized craft production seem to have been important in the social and political dynamics of the emerging Quijos chiefdoms. Book excerpt: How to read Walter Benjamin today? This book argues that the proper way is through an approach which recognizes and respects his own peculiar theorization of the act of reading and the politics of interpretation that this entails. The approach must be figural, that is, focused on images, and driven by the notion of actualization. Figural reading, in the very sui generis Benjaminian way, understands figures as constellations, whereby an image of the past juxtaposes them with an image of the present and is thus actualized. To apply this method to Benjamin's own work means first to identify some figures. The book singles out the Flâneur, the Detective, the Prostitute and the Ragpicker, and then sets them alongside a contemporary account of the same figure: the Flâneur in Juan Goytisolo's Landscapes after the Battle (1982), the Detective in Paul Auster's New York Trilogy (1987), the Prostitute in Dacia Maraini's Dialogue between a Prostitute and her Client (1973), and the Ragpicker in Mudrooroo's The Mudrooroo/Müller Project (1993). The book thereby, on the one hand, analyses the politics of reading Benjamin today and, on the other, sets his work against a variety of contemporary aesthetics and politics of interpretation.

Book excerpt: This book assesses Goytisolo's contribution to cultural debates in Spain since the sixties and revises the prevailing critical interpretation of his fiction, arguing that his works represent an ethical engagement with postmodernist theory rather than an illustration of it. This monograph offers two new perspectives on Spanish writer, Juan Goytisolo. First, under the themes of authorship and dissidence, it integrates his writing across several genres, providing a rounded assessment of his contribution to cultural debates in Spain since the sixties and arguing that resistance to repressive discourses characterizes his essays and autobiographies as much as his fiction. Second, it revises the prevailing critical interpretation of Goytisolo's fiction by building on four premises: that his novels are less clearly oppositional than prevailing interpretations imply; that, in order to engage with discourses of identity, he employs an idiom which, contrary to his own statements, is not a poststructuralist autonomous world of words; that a textual practice grounded in the recognizable experience of post-Civil War Spain, rather than one which seeks out the realm of pure textuality, is essential to Goytisolo's subversive political intentions; and that the autobiographical element of much of his work constitutes a more complex narrative aesthetic than has been appreciated. The book argues that ifGoytisolo's work is interpreted as an ethical engagement with postmodernist theory, rather than as an illustration of it, then certain contradictions for which he has been criticized are seen in a new and valuable light.
