Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artistic career of Frederick Sandys may not have been lucrative, but it was certainly prolific - as this complete catalogue demonstrates. For the very first time every known piece of work undertaken by the artist is included in this definitive volume. The catalogue entries begin with Sandys' immature efforts and competition entries from 1839, includes his days spent with the Rossetti brothers and the Pre-Rapaelite Brotherhood, and continues through to his final few works, shortly before his death in 1904. It includes untraced works about which the author has uncovered copious amounts of information. A concise, comprehensive biographical text outlines Sandys' life, not only correcting mistakes, but also introducing previously unknown, newly researched aspects of the artists life. The catalogue is divided into five chronological periods and lavishly illustrated with glorious colour plates and hundreds of black and white photographs. This truly is the definitive guide to the life and works of Frederick Sandys. 75 colour & 450 b/w illustrations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beautiful mountains and streams of Canada and the Adirondacks to the sandy beaches of New England, from the picturesque coasts of English villages to the sunny shores of the Bahamas, Winslow Homer captured in his paintings the true magnificence of nature. For more than thirty years between 1873 and 1905, Winslow Homer turned to watercolors during his working vacations, concentrating on capturing the spirit of each place he visited with both spontaneity and intensity. Many of Homer’s most beautiful paintings focus on the interaction between humans and nature—a hunter carrying a deer on his shoulders, a man fishing from a small canoe, a girl lounging and reading in the grass, a young man driving cattle, a fisherman’s family anxiously watching for his return. It is Homer’s understanding of this important relationship between humans and nature that makes his paintings so intriguing. Winslow Homer Watercolors reproduces the best of these paintings. Large color plates allow these reproductions to be appreciated almost as much as the originals. Accompanying the more than 100 color plates is an eloquent introduction and detailed chronology of Homer’s life and artistic development. This stunning volume allows one to experience nature through the eyes of one of America’s greatest painters. It is a vision of nature from a century ago that is still appreciated today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, naturalists, poets and artists were united in their love of trees. William Gilpin began his influential 'Remarks on Forest Scenery' (1791) with the bold statement that 'It is no exaggerated praise to call a tree the grandest, and most beautiful of all the productions of the earth.' Illustrated books and tree portraits celebrated the beauty, antiquity and diversity of individual, and particularly ancient specimens. A wide range of drawing manuals showed artists and amateurs how to express their 'character' and 'anatomy', as if they were human subjects. Paintings of woodland scenes provided welcome relief from city life, and studies of exotic trees reflected the growth of tourism and empire. The arrival of new species from all over the world aroused much excitement and scientific activity. At the same time, the native trees - oak, ash, beech, elm - acquired new resonance as emblems of the rural countryside. Many of Britain's most important landscape painters, including Paul Sandby, John Constable, Samuel Palmer, Edward Lear, and the Pre-Raphaelites, made themselves experts in the drawing and painting of trees.
