Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Paolo Veronese: Piety and Display in an Age of Religious Reform examines the large body of religious paintings with which Veronese (1528 -1588) played a crucial role in shaping Venetian piety. With 117 illustrations (26 in colour) Richard Cocke sets Veronese’s work into context, arguing his mastery of narrative has long been neglected, largely as a result of Sir Joshua Reynolds's criticism in his Discourses. The new expressiveness of Veronese’s work in his final decade is linked with the decrees of the Council of Trent, which resulted in an enhanced display of paintings in Venetian palaces during the 1570s, matched by the renewed decorative schemes in the city’s churches.

Book Delphi Complete Paintings of Paolo Veronese Illustrated

Download or read book Delphi Complete Paintings of Paolo Veronese Illustrated written by Paolo Veronese and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the principle painters of the sixteenth century Venetian school, Paolo Veronese produced monumental works, portraying allegorical, biblical and historical subjects in splendid colour, set against the backdrop of Renaissance architecture. A master of colour, Veronese also excelled at illusionary compositions that extend the eye beyond the actual confines of the room. After an early period of Mannerism, he developed a naturalist style of painting, which was influenced by Titian and would go on to inspire the masters of the Baroque and later eras. His works are celebrated for their chromatic brilliance, sensibility of brushwork, aristocratic elegance and the sheer magnificence of spectacle. Book excerpt: "A pioneering work in the field of art history, The Image of the Black in Western Art is a comprehensive series of ten books which offers a lavishly illustrated history of the representations of people of African descent from antiquity to the present. Each book includes a series of essays by some of the most distinguished names in art history. Ranging from images of Pharaohs created by unknown hands almost 3,500 years ago to the works of the great masters of European and American art such as Bosch, Dürer, Mantegna, Rembrandt, Rubens, Watteau, Hogarth, Copley, and Goya to stunning new media creations by contemporary black artists, these books are generously illustrated with beautiful, moving, and often little-known images of black people. Black figures-queens and slaves, saints and soldiers, priests and prisoners, dancers and athletes, children and gods-are central to the visual imagination of Western civilization. Written in accessible language, the extensive and insightful commentaries on the illustrations by distinguished art historians make this series invaluable for the general reader and the specialist alike."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book Transfiguration

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Cheeke
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016
  • ISBN : 0198757204
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Transfiguration written by Stephen Cheeke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transfiguration explores the work of John Ruskin, Robert Browning, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Walter Pater, treating in particular the ways in which they engaged with the Christian content of their subject, and, in Pater's case, how the art of Christianity was contrasted with classical sculpture. Stephen Cheeke examines two related phenomena: idolatry (a false substitution, a sexual betrayal), and the poetics of transfiguration (to elevate or glorify subject matter not thought of as conventionally poetic, to praise). Central to the book is the question of the "translation" of religion into art and aesthetics, a process which supposedly undergirds the advent of the museum age and makes possible the idea of a 'religion of art' as a phenomenon of late century Aestheticism. Such a phenomenon is prepared for, however, through the engagement with Christian painting and classical sculpture in the work of these four writers. All four thought carefully about the ways in which a particular mimetic impulse of 'making-live' in artworks could be connected to religious experience. This meant exploring the nature of the link between seeing and believing--visualising in order to conceive, to verify, but also in the sense of being acted upon by the visible. All four wrote about the great power of artworks to transfigure the objects of their attention. In each case, there emerges the possibility of a secret sexual knowledge hiding within, or lying on the other side of the sensuous knowledge of aesthesis. All four wondered whether this was inherently hostile to Christianity, or whether it may, finally, be an accommodation within it.
